Families Through Time: Past Stories, Present Lives, Future Families
### **Families Through Time: Past Stories, Present Lives, Future Families**
Families are central to human life. They shape identity, belonging, values, and everyday experience. Across history, family forms have changed in response to economic conditions, cultural traditions, social norms, and political structures. At the same time, families deeply influence individuals’ emotional worlds, relationships, and life opportunities.
This session explores how family structures have evolved over time, how they function in contemporary society, and how they may transform in the future. We will examine both structural changes and personal experiences, connecting historical developments with present realities and future possibilities.
In this session, we will focus on the following topics:
* **Historical family forms**: nuclear, extended, and multigenerational households and how they shaped daily life
* **Changing roles across generations**: shifts in parenting, gender roles, and family responsibilities
* **Social and cultural influences**: how norms, religion, and legal systems define and regulate family structures
* **Contemporary family diversity**: single-parent, blended, LGBTQ+, and chosen families
* **The future of families**: how technology, work patterns, migration, and social change may transform family life
This will be an open and reflective conversation grounded in historical understanding, social analysis, and personal perspectives. Together, we will explore how families shape our past and present—and how we can imagine supportive and inclusive family forms for the future.

February book selection: The Path to the Nest of Spiders by Italo Calvino
For our February reading, let's go to Italy, back in time.
*Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno*, in English The Path to the Nest of Spiders, is the first novel by Italian author **Italo Calvino**, published in 1947.
It is set during **World War II** in a small coastal town in **Liguria, Italy**, at the height of the Italian Resistance against Nazi and fascist forces.
The story is told largely through the experiences of a young boy named **Pin**, an orphan who lives with his older sister and is often excluded or mocked by the adults around him because of his sister’s relationships with German soldiers.
Calvino presents this harsh historical period through Pin’s eyes, blending gritty reality with moments that feel almost surreal or dreamlike.
His narrative combines neorealist sensibilities with poetic touches, making this both a historical portrayal of wartime Italy and a deeply human story of innocence, loss, and resilience.
**About the author**
Italo Calvino (1923–1985) was an Italian writer born in Cuba to Italian parents and raised in Italy. He took part in the Italian Resistance during World War II, an experience that deeply influenced his early work, including *Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno*. He began writing within the tradition of Italian neorealism but soon moved beyond it, developing a distinctive style marked by imagination, clarity, and intellectual playfulness.
Over time, Calvino became known for blending realism with fantasy, allegory, and formal experimentation, as seen in works like *Invisible Cities* and *If on a winter’s night a traveler*. His writing often explores themes such as storytelling itself, the relationship between order and chaos, and the search for meaning in modern life. With a style that is both precise and imaginative, Calvino is widely regarded as one of the most original and influential writers of the 20th century.
**About the location of the event**

**Event contribution alert**
The event might require a small participation fee (3-5 euros) or the purchase of something to eat or drink in case we are hosted by a coffee shop. I will make sure to communicate that in advance.

Lesen. Schreiben. Teilen.
**Worum geht’s?**

Wednesday, March 18
1:00pm - 2:30pm
Gone are the days when a garden could be ornamental alone. We now recognize the impact that our land care practices have on the ecosystems around us, and can see the importance of encouraging biodiversity. Thankfully, we do not need to sacrifice beauty when we invite butterflies and songbirds into our gardens.
Rebecca McMackin has cultivated gorgeous landscapes in the toughest environments possible: urban parks, school playgrounds, and the sidewalks of New York City. She will take lessons from her work at Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Brooklyn Museum, and decades of research to share how those of us who are fortunate enough to care for land, can do it beautifully and ecologically.
Rebecca McMackin is an ecologically obsessed horticulturist and garden designer. She writes, lectures, and teaches on ecological landscape management and pollination ecology, as well as designs the rare public garden.
She is currently Lead Horticulturist for the American Horticultural Society, an Associate with the Harvard Divinity School’s Thinking with Plants and Fungi Initiative, and Consulting Arboretum Curator for Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, NY.
Rebecca spent a decade as Director of Horticulture of Brooklyn Bridge Park, where she managed 85 acres of diverse parkland organically. Their research into cultivating urban biodiversity and ethical management strategies has influenced thousands of people and entire urban parks systems to adopt similar approaches.
She has been published by and featured in the New York Times, Gardens Illustrated, on NPR and PBS. Her garden for the Brooklyn Museum recently won the PPA’s Award of Excellence and her TED Talk has been viewed over a million times. She holds M.Sc. from Columbia University and University of Victoria in landscape design and biology and recently completed the Loeb Fellowship at the
Harvard Graduate School of Design.
This program is presented in partnership with Rooted in Bexley and generously funded by the Bexley Community Foundation and Bexley Community Author Series Fund.
