**THE HEARTH is a community for people interested in building community** 😊 **Why is it called 'THE HEARTH'?** Hestia is the goddess of the hearth. She is also the goddess of community, hospitality towards strangers, home, and warmth. She is symbolised by the sacred fire burning in every home and city. Known for her inner strength, calm demeanour, and commitment to peace, I think Hestia embodies qualities that can be very helpful when cultivating community! 🔥 **HOW IT WORKS (... at present, we continue to evolve according to feedback) :** We will start by discussing a thought experiment related to community * this is a tried and tested method of getting into good conversations quickly, see my other community "[THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS](https://www.meetup.com/thought-experiments-in-pubs/)" for evidence! * we will split into small groups for about 25 minutes to discuss We will then open up discussion to the room. Join us for a scenic and peaceful adventure through the countryside north of Wickford, where quiet woodlands, farmland paths, and the tranquil waters of Hanningfield Reservoir combine into a perfect winter escape. This circular route winds through open fields, hedgerow trails, and rural lanes before meeting the edge of the famous Hanningfield Reservoir nature reserve — a haven for winter birdlife and sweeping water views. Expect varied terrain, gentle rolling hills and wide Essex skies. Start/Finish: Wickford Station Distance: 18.5 km Time: Approx. 6 hrs including breaks Total Ascent: 155 m Grade: 2.5 – Moderate–Challenging Meet: 9:00 am Start: 9:15 am Finish: \~3.15pm From Wickford, we follow country lanes and permissive paths through historic Downham and the surrounding farmland. As we loop north, glimpses of the reservoir appear through trees before we reach the southern shoreline, where birds, water views and peaceful wood edges take centre stage. The return route offers more variety—past small farms, tucked-away woodland strips and gently undulating countryside—before bringing us back into Wickford. A brilliant longer day out for those looking for mileage, landscapes, and the calm beauty of rural Essex. What to Wear and Bring: \- Our walks go ahead in all weather\, so dress appropriately\. Always carry a waterproof jacket\. \- Check the forecast and bring sun cream\, a hat\, or sunglasses for warm days\, and waterproofs\, a warm hat\, and gloves for cold or wet days\. \- Wear trousers or leggings to reduce the risk of tick bites and nettle stings\. Avoid denim or cotton\. \- Sturdy walking shoes or boots are essential\. Most people would agree that a great night's sleep is one of the sweetest experiences in life. Crawling into a wonderfully comfortable bed, drifting off to peaceful slumber, and awaking, feeling refreshed, energized, and ready for the day is a gift everyone welcomes. Unfortunately, nights of perfect sleep and restfulness can seem scarce. Particularly, during the truly hard times in life, good sleep can seem an impossibility. The ancient shepherd-crowned-king, David, knew more than the average person about the challenge of getting a good night's sleep in the midst of being falsely maligned, hunted by enemies, and attacked by those who wanted him dead. He understood the terror of running for his life, and having thousands call for his death. What was his answer? Where could a man on the run find peace? What hope was there for a person in such circumstances? David's hope and peace were found in the One Who he knew was Perfect Truth, Justice, Mercy, and Grace, the God Who had delivered His people before and Who would do so again, and again, and again. Because of God's provision David twice details that even in the midst of his enemies, he would "lie down and sleep, and wake again." Psalm 3 and 4 point us to the hope in which those who follow after the Lord can be confident--that from the Lord comes deliverance.
