There are several traits inside all of us that precisely make us who we are and that is called our personality. A lot of it depends on how the outside world perceives our personality and reacts to it. And that makes us human beings as a whole. types-of-personalities2Everybody has a basic idea of what kind of a person they are, but a lot of times, they tend to act opposite in order to hide several characteristics of themselves and that comes with a lot of problems in their social structure and standing. Over the years many have tried head over heels in order to determine several types of personality traits that could constitute all of them but there hasn’t been any success so far in that regard and the topic remains debated. But talking about the different types of personalities, the experts have been able to find certain personality traits that constitute a personality on the whole and we will discuss those traits further. But before that, we must say that the overall personality of a human being can be a combination of all those traits or one or two of them. Only in depth study can allow us to determine the traits of the personality.
Live-Reading Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics – North American Style
Let's try something new. For the next dozen weeks or so, starting 4/17/2022, we are going to live-read and discuss Aristotle's \~*Nicomachean Ethics*\~. What is new and different about this project is that the translation, by Adam Beresford (2020), happens to be rendered in standard 'Murican English.
.
From the translator's "Note" on the text:
.
"This translation is conservative in interpretation and traditional in aim. It aims to translate the text as accurately as possible.
.
"I translated every page from scratch, from a clean Greek text, rather than revising an existing translation. ... I wanted to avoid the scholars’ dialect that is traditionally used for translating Aristotle.
...
"I reject the approach of Arthur Adkins, Elizabeth Anscombe, and others who followed Nietzsche in supposing that the main elements of modern thinking about right and wrong were unknown to the Greeks, or known to them only in some radically different form. My view of humanity and of our shared moral instincts is shaped by a newer paradigm. This is a post-Darwinian translation. (It is also more in line with the older, both Aristotelian and Christian view of human character.)
.
"Having said that, I have no interest at all in modernizing Aristotle’s ideas. All the attitudes of this treatise remain fully Greek, very patriarchal, somewhat aristocratic, and firmly embedded in the fourth century BC. My choice of dialect (standard English) has no bearing on that whatsoever. (It is perfectly possible to express distinctively Greek and ancient attitudes in standard English.) ... I have also not simplified the text in any way. I have translated every iota, particle, preposition, noun, verb, adjective, phrase, clause, and sentence of the original. Every premise and every argument therefore remains – unfortunately – exactly as complex and annoyingly difficult as in any other version in whatever dialect.
...
"Some scholars and students unwarily assume that the traditional dialect has a special connection with Greek and that using it brings readers closer to the original text; and that it makes the translation more accurate. In reality, it has no special tie to the Greek language, either in its main philosophical glossary or in its dozens of minor (and pointless) deviations from normal English. And in my view it certainly makes any translation much less accurate.
.
"I will occasionally refer to the scholars’ dialect (‘Gringlish’) and its traditional glossary in the Notes."
.
.
Here is our plan:
1\. Read Intro excerpts or a summary to gain the big picture\.
2\. Read a segment of the translated text\.
3\. Discuss it analytically and interpretively\.
4\. Repeat again at \#2 for several more times\.
5\. Discuss the segments evaluatively\.
.
.
Zoom is the project's current meeting platform, but that can change. The project's cloud drive is [here](https://mega.nz/folder/vqJCXIQJ#muxiUXMHhfljvxKnWaOxZA), at which you'll find the reading texts, notes, and slideshows.

Esperanto Conversation for Beginners - Online Event
Online Esperanto Conversation for Beginners! Please RSVP if you are able to attend!
We will use Jitsi Meet. No account or software is required if you use Chrome or Chromium browsers - however we strongly recommend that you install the Chrome browser extension. You may also choose to install the app: https://support.mayfirst.org/wiki/web-conference#no1
Notes about connecting:
- Jitsi Meet works best with 20 or fewer participants.
- Android and Ipad users need to download the Jitsi Meet app.
- If just one participant is using an un-supported browser (like an older version of Firefox or Internet Edge/Explorer or Safari) it can make the entire meeting fail.
- Some computers, particularly older ones, may struggle to keep up with a meeting.
- If you are using video for all participants, each participant needs a high bandwidth connection. Alternatively, instruct participants to turn off their video when they are not speaking.
There are no break out rooms - however, you can instruct users to go to different rooms and then return to the main room - it's manual, not automatic

4:15 - Mute your camera and mike when timer starts: write for 1 hour.
5:15 - (the end) chat / log off when you need to / Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.

Listening Hour
What it is
A weekly 1 hour connection and empathy space currently hosted by people who have experience in NVC, for anyone interested in NVC.
This is not a workshop but a peer listening space to encourage listening.
Who it’s for
Everyone who is interested in NVC is welcome. No need for formal training but it’s great if you have been to some trainings.
Come if you want to practice listening.
Come if you’d enjoy a listening ear.
What happens
We offer a structure which offers clear guidance to everyone about what to do.
Format (Each host will hold the space in a slightly different way but the overall structure will be the same)
• Check-in
• breakout into 3s for empathy and listening. (Empathy guidelines will be given and you can respond to the generative question ‘What do you want empathy for or to talk through?’)
• Closing
Self responsibility
This is a reminder that everyone is responsible for themselves and we encourage you to take care of your own emotional safety.
Bear in mind your listening partners aren’t trainers or therapists.
Is there any cost?
We’re offering these sessions for free as we’d like to contribute to making empathy support more accessible, especially during these challenging times. Afterwards, if you are moved to do so, and can afford it, we’d be grateful for a donation to our chosen organisation:
NVC Matters (the national organisation for NVC in the UK): Bank account: 65414848 SC: 089299
Please register here to get the zoom link sent to you for each session https://subscribepage.io/LHsignup

Free in-person event: Take Control of Your Mental Health
It’s time to take control of your mental health. How do you get rid of stress, anxiety and uncertainty? These emotions are buried deep in your reactive mind. Find out what the reactive mind is, and in the process find yourself.
Have you ever suffered from a traumatic experience, a deep loss or been through a painful breakup? Has your ability to communicate suffered as a result? And after that, even though you "moved on" did you find that things were never quite the same? Have you ever looked at childhood photos, or reminisced your early life and wondered where that happiness and spark went?
Are your emotions out of your own control? Have you ever felt, even if you aren’t aware of it, that possibly you are getting in your own way of your happiness and success? How does this affect your self-confidence?
Find out what is at the root of all stress, anxiety, depression and self-doubt. Find out how and why you hold yourself back from achieving your goals and having the life you have dreamed of. As soon as you learn what is at the root of these unwanted conditions, you’ll see it is something you can DO something about. You will not be labeled or categorized at this MeetUp.
Il Sorpasso (The Easy Life)
A classic Italian road comedy that was so good the film ministry recognized it as "culturally significant." Starring Vittorio Gassman and Jean-Louis Trintignant, the film shows that for young men in love the rules of the road are only suggestions. And the rules for love? Hey, this is an Italian picture! Oh to be young and filled with joie de vivre or la dolce vita.
A french/italian fun filled movie with a surprising twist at the end.
Do you have a fun memory from your youth?
Location TBD, but it will be in person for sure!
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for March is "Our Bodies, Ourselves"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!

Contra dance with Big Scioty on March 7 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Frank Buschelmann**
**Band: The Rosenthorns**
**Big Scioty Contra Dance**
**temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
