Join us for a tropical 8.5-mile cruise around Rockville to York Castle Ice Cream. This locally-owned small business is known for its housemade ice cream in tropical flavors such as guava, lychee and mango! This ride completes a loop inside the Carl Henn Millennium Trail (CHMT). Our route has rolling hills and is mostly on neighborhood streets. From Research Blvd, we'll follow Watts Branch Pkwy and hop on the CHMT until we get to Tower Oaks and our access to Dogwood Park. We'll go through Dogwood Park and head to Rockville Town Center. Then, we'll go to east Rockville and through the Lincoln Park neighborhood. After climbing up and over the Unity Bridge, we'll arrive at our destination for a sweet treat. Afterwards it's all downhill to the Rockville Senior Center and back to our start location. Join Philippa Rappoport, an expert on Slavic folklore and rituals, for a discussion of the water spirits of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia and the traditions centered around them. She'll describe how rusalki were both revered and feared by people who would sing songs in their honor while carrying protective charms. You'll learn how East Slavic mermaid lore permeated wedding rituals and parades, inspired the construction of effigies, and reflected beliefs about women that, throughout the world, have translated into a lot of concern over how women wear their hair and cover their heads.
