[EVENTBRITE required] Fireside Chat - Luxembourg’s Summer in Three Acts
⚠️EVENTBRITE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED⚠️ https://www.eventbrite.com/e/luxembourgs-summer-in-three-acts-pilgrimage-harvest-and-wine-tickets-1987782782813?aff=meetup
(Ignore the 10-attendees-limit – registrations are valid through Eventbrite)
**Luxembourg’s Summer in Three Acts: Pilgrimage, Harvest, and Wine**
This is the **third event** of the newly launched **Bourgmeisterin: Fireside Chats** bi-monthly series – a cultural storytelling format supported by the [Ministry of Family Affairs, Solidarity, Living Together, and Reception of Refugees ](https://mfsva.gouvernement.lu/en/.html "https://mfsva.gouvernement.lu/en/.html") and co-produced with[ ](https://www.radioara.org/)**[ARA City Radio](https://www.radioara.org/)** that runs from winter 2026 till summer 2027. The series builds on **[Bourgmeisterin](https://bourgmeisterin.com/about "https://bourgmeisterin.com/about")**, a long-running cultural storytelling project that has been exploring Luxembourg’s history, traditions, and identity for over 2.5 years.
For those who missed the previous events: all events are vide-recorded as podcasts – here's the **[YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@Bourgmeisterin)[📺](https://youtu.be/m_DnkOWUn4w?feature=shared "https://youtu.be/m_DnkOWUn4w?feature=shared")** to bring you up to speed😉
**\-\-\-**
This Fireside Chat explores three traditions that have helped Luxembourg mark the passing of summer for centuries:
🕺🏻🥁**Hopping Procession of Echternach** – why do thousands of people still hop through the streets of Echternach every year at the end of May?
🌾**Léiffrawëschdag** – why are bouquets made from herbs, grains, onions and carrots still blessed on August 15 in Greiveldange (and many other parts of the country for that matter)?
🍷**Fiederwäissen** – and why does a cloudy, unfinished wine inspire such anticipation every autumn?
In a world that moves *faster than ever*, some traditions continue to bring people together – not because they are **efficient or practical,** but because they **help us mark time, create belonging, and make sense of change.**
They show how people have historically navigated beginnings, endings, uncertainty, and belonging.
Together, we'll explore:
* Why communities create rituals in the first place
* What it means to move, celebrate, and participate as a group
* How traditions help people mark the passing of time
* Why certain customs survive while others disappear
* And what these rituals can still teach us about community, identity, and belonging today
Because sometimes the most interesting question isn't why a tradition exists.
**It's why people continue returning to it.**
**💃🏻Who's leading the conversation**
* The evening is hosted by **[Julia Khalyavko](https://www.linkedin.com/in/julia-khalyavko-54a6a420b/)**, the founder of **Bourgmeisterin**, a cultural storytelling project dedicated to exploring Luxembourg’s history, traditions, and contemporary identity through articles, podcasts, and public conversations.
* The discussion is joined by **[Joëlla van Donkersgoed](https://www.linkedin.com/in/joella-van-donkersgoed)**, a Dutch heritage scholar and public historian who has lived in Luxembourg for the last five years. With a background in heritage studies, and art history, she focuses on how communities connect with their past in the present. She has led several public-facing history projects during her time at the **Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH)** at the **University of Luxembourg**, helping to make local history meaningful to wider audiences.
**🤝🍷🍔Stay, talk, connect**
The conversation doesn’t end when the fireside chat does. **Catering and drinks will be served after the discussion**, offering space to linger, exchange thoughts, and connect with fellow attendees in a relaxed, informal setting with up to 50 other attendees.
**🎥🗣️NB! Recording, publication and spoken language**
* Please note that the fireside chat will be **video-recorded**. Some **before- and after-moments** – as guests arrive and leave – may also be captured. The recording will be edited into a **video-podcast episode** and published on **YouTube** as part of the Bourgmeisterin: Fireside Chats series.
* The event will be held in **English**.
**A big thank you to our partners:**
🎥 **Super8**, our videography partner bringing the Fireside Chats to life on screen,

June book selection: The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
"The God of Small Things" is the 1997 debut novel written by Indian author Arundhati Roy, winning her the Booker Prize the same year. The novel's events are set against the backdrop of social discrimination and political upheaval in 1960s Kerala, with casteism and British colonialism in India being central themes.
Upon its publication the book received stellar reviews in major American and Canadian newspapers; critical response in the United Kingdom was less positive. A 1996 Booker Prize judge called the novel "execrable". In India, the book was criticised especially for its unrestrained description of sexuality. The then-Chief Minister of Roy's home state Kerala voiced criticism about the book's depiction of women and sex, and Roy had to answer charges of obscenity.
By 2019, the Brits had revised their opinion. The Daily Telegraph ranked "The God of Small Things" as one of the 10 all-time greatest Asian novels, BBC News named it one of the 100 most influential novels, and the Independent listed it as one of the 12 best Indian novels.
*Goodreads summary*
The year is 1969. In the state of Kerala, on the southernmost tip of India, a skyblue Plymouth with chrome tailfins is stranded on the highway amid a Marxist workers' demonstration. Inside the car sit two-egg twins Rahel and Esthappen, and so begins their tale. . . .
Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, they fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family—their lonely, lovely mother, Ammu (who loves by night the man her children love by day), their blind grandmother, Mammachi (who plays Handel on her violin), their beloved uncle Chacko (Rhodes scholar, pickle baron, radical Marxist, bottom-pincher), their enemy, Baby Kochamma (ex-nun and incumbent grandaunt), and the ghost of an imperial entomologist's moth (with unusually dense dorsal tufts).
When their English cousin, Sophie Mol, and her mother, Margaret Kochamma, arrive on a Christmas visit, Esthappen and Rahel learn that Things Can Change in a Day. That lives can twist into new, ugly shapes, even cease forever, beside their river "graygreen." With fish in it. With the sky and trees in it. And at night, the broken yellow moon in it.
The brilliantly plotted story uncoils with an agonizing sense of foreboding and inevitability. Yet nothing prepares you for what lies at the heart of it.
The God of Small Things takes on the Big Themes—Love. Madness. Hope. Infinite Joy. Here is a writer who dares to break the rules. To dislocate received rhythms and create the language she requires, a language that is at once classical and unprecedented. Arundhati Roy has given us a book that is anchored to anguish, but fueled by wit and magic.

Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
[The Board Walks](http://www.theboardwalks.com/) are for curious people who love deep conversations.
If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!).
**HOW IT WORKS**
**Step 1: Bring a topic**
Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event.
**Step 2: Circle up & share**
We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds.
**Step 3: Walk, talk & float**
We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!"
**Step 4: Feel more alive**
Two hours flies by. You're back where you started — but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others. That's why regulars join 20+ times.
*For more details, read our [Orientation Guide.](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation)*
**HOW TO BRING A GREAT TOPIC**
A great topic = something you're genuinely curious about.
Recent topics include:
* "What are you passionate about right now?"
* "What makes a good friend?"
* "What's a belief you used to hold that you've completely changed?"
* "How do you want to be remembered?"
* "What would you do if money wasn't a factor?"
Think of your topic like the dish you're bringing to our conversational potluck. If everyone brings an A+ dish (i.e. energizing, uplifting, expansive), we'll all walk away feeling lighter and brighter.
**WHAT TO EXPECT**
This isn't a fitness event with casual chitchat. It's a walking think tank where we explore life's big questions together, beyond small talk. *If you're looking for light banter or a standard networking event, this probably isn't the right fit.*
But if you crave depth, genuine connection, and conversations that make you feel alive? You'll love it here.
**FAQ**
* Wear casual athletic attire and sneakers. It's a long walk!
* We have multiple first-timers at each event. We work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive, clique-free space.
* We welcome people of **all** ages, backgrounds, and industries who align with the [intention](https://www.theboardwalks.com/ground-rules) of this space.
* Rain or shine, we've been out here nearly every week since July 2022. If the event is cancelled, we'll let you know.
* Dogs, babies in strollers, parents, and friends are welcome — please text/email them the event link so they can RSVP and prepare a topic!
**LOGISTICS**
* If you'll arrive over 10 minutes late, we suggest skipping the event. It's hard to find us once we start walking, and your host can't answer messages during the event.
* This walk is designed for everyone to *move together at the same steady pace* (about 20 min/mile). This format works best when the whole group moves in unison. If you have mobility limitations, we kindly encourage you to find an event better suited to your needs.
* Read our [Orientation Guide](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation) for full details.
* If you enjoy the event, send **[this](http://www.theboardwalks.com/)** to a friend or sign up for our **[newsletter](https://theboardwalks.beehiiv.com/)**. We're in multiple cities with more on the way. 🤠👋
**IF YOU WANT TO GO DEEPER...**
[The Board](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board) is the next step: a high-trust collective for renaissance people devoted to creating, connecting, and building lives that light us up.
* This is a global HQ for people who crave big talk, deep connection, and dream collaborations with people across industries. If the walks feel like a spark... The Board is the fire. Apply [here](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board).
