**Session description:**
**Jasper Oosterveld - With Great Power Comes Great Labeling: Sensitivity Labels in de Praktijk**

METALCAFE Live at de Vorstin
Tickets:
https://vorstin.stager.co/shop/default/events/111575211
Daarnaast werkte Sugar Spine samen met artiesten als Bleed From Within, Cabal, To The Grave, Distant en Born Of Osiris.
Let’s raise some hell, metalheads!
SEA: Search Engines Amsterdam
This session focuses on **Reasoning for Search Systems**, featuring two speakers: **Alex Egg** from **Adyen** and **Mohanna Hoveyda** from **Radboud University**.
**Location:** Science Park 904, Room C3.161
**Date**: Friday, March 27
**Time**: 16:00-17:00
**Zoom** **link**: [https://uva-live.zoom.us/j/65011610507](https://uva-live.zoom.us/j/65011610507)
Details below:
**Speaker #1**: **Alex Egg** from **Adyen**
**Title**: Dense Retrieval for Identity: Real-Time Entity Linking in Payments
**Abstract**: Modern payment platforms must link billions of transactions to the correct shopper identity in real time. Traditional solutions rely on rule-based logic over identifiers such as card hashes, emails, or device fingerprints, but these approaches struggle when identifiers are incomplete, inconsistent, or shared across multiple individuals. In this talk, we describe how we reformulate customer event linking as a dense retrieval problem, where transactions act as queries and shopper identities act as documents in a vector search system. Transactions are encoded using a pretrained neural embedding model fine-tuned with contrastive learning, and incoming transactions are matched to shopper identities via approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) search over billions of shopper embeddings. We will discuss the representation learning challenges that arise in this setting, including learning identity signals from partially observed identifiers and aggregating transaction histories into shopper representations, as well as the system architecture required to support real-time retrieval at scale using hierarchical routing, vector compression, and distributed ANN search.
**Bio**: Alex Egg is a Research Scientist at Adyen with a background in reinforcement learning. He previously worked on RL and LLM research at Meta, eBay, and UCSD.
**Speaker #2: Mohanna Hoveyda** from **Radboud University**
**Title**: The Reasoning Gap in Search: Overview of Current Paradigms and a Neurosymbolic Solution
**Abstract**: Information retrieval has long focused on ranking documents by semantic relatedness. Yet many real-world information needs demand more: enforcement of logical constraints, multi-step inference, and synthesis of multiple pieces of evidence.
Meeting these needs turns retrieval into a reasoning problem.
In this talk, we first overview the current landscape of reasoning approaches applied or adaptable to IR from the broader AI research, along with a framework to help compare and relate these approaches for future research.
We then present OrLog, our neuro-symbolic retrieval solution that addresses the reasoning gap for logically constrained queries. OrLog decouples predicate plausibility estimation from logical reasoning: an LLM provides plausibility scores for atomic predicates in a single generation-free forward pass, from which a probabilistic reasoning engine derives the posterior probability of query satisfaction. Evaluated across multiple backbone LLMs and logical constraint types, OrLog significantly improves top-rank precision while reducing token usage by approximately 90% per query-entity pair compared to LLM-as-reasoner baselines.
**Bio**: I am Mohanna, a PhD student at Radboud University. My research focuses on adaptive orchestration in multi-agent search systems using reinforcement learning, and on developing reasoning methods that require less compute.
**Counter:** SEA Talks #301 and #302.

🏔️ Summit Hike – Everest Edition (8,848 m)
🏔️ Everest Update for the Veluwe Power Hikers
We were preparing for a classic VPH high altitude expedition on top of the world. Unfortunately there is some disappointing news. Starting in 2026, Nepal is introducing strict new regulations for climbing Mount Everest. Climbers will now need to have previously summited a 7,000 meter peak in Nepal and must also submit mandatory health certificates.
Because we cannot realistically summit a 7,000 meter peak and then climb Everest on the same day during our hike, I am unfortunately obliged to change the program.
There is also another small complication. 1 April falls on a Wednesday, which makes organizing the expedition a bit difficult.
After a poll in the WhatsApp group, we decided to move the date to **28 March** and climb the highest point of the Veluwe, **Signaal Imbosch (110 m)**. Even if it’s not Everest, don’t underestimate this hike: we will cover **22 km with about 350 metres of elevation gain** at a brisk pace. At this altitude, however, oxygen bottles are no longer recommended.
Please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend due to the change. ⛰️🥾
**When and Where to Meet?**
10:10 sharp at Rheden Trainstation. ⏰ Please arrive on time, as we won’t be able to wait for latecomers. 🥾✨
https://maps.app.goo.gl/VaEtswyBps5awMoL7
**Where and When Shall We Rest?**
We’ll take 2 breaks:
* Lunch break in nature at Signaal Imbosch (110 m) with group photo on summit; 20 min
* Snack and drink at Basecamp (80 m) where you can buy drinks and snacks; 30 min
**Notifications:**
* Technical equipment: avalanche transceiver (beacon), avalanche probe, and avalanche shovel (if you have them)
* A compact lunch and water to share at the summit
* The hike will only be canceled in case of severe avalanche risk (code 5).
* If you plan to bring a companion, please ensure that they are also registered for the hike.
* To be the first to get updates on new hikes, join our WhatsApp group! Feel free to ask for the QR code during the hike to easily join.
* T-shirts are now available for €25, made from Fairwear-certified organic cotton with eco-friendly inks—sustainable, odor-resistant, and perfect for your hiking adventures (limited stock, available during the hike)! Let me know your size and I will bring one for you!

* Een kleine groep van max. 8 vaders
* Een mooie route op de Veluwe
* Goede gesprekken en oefeningen onderweg
* Ruimte voor jouw verhaal
* Koffie/thee en een snack na afloop
🏛️ Pastime #2 – The Romans in the Netherlands: Nijmegen (Noviomagus)
📍 Meeting point: **Nijmegen Lent Station** (⚠️ not Nijmegen Centraal!)
🗓 **Saturday, March 28th, 2026**
🕑 **14:00**
After starting our journey through Dutch history with **Prehistory**, it’s time to move forward to the **Roman era**.
And when we talk about Romans in the Netherlands, there is one unavoidable place to go: **Nijmegen**, the oldest city in the country, founded by the Romans as **Noviomagus**.
We’ll start from the other side of the river Waal and walk towards the historic city centre, combining **river landscapes, green parks and urban history**. Along the way we’ll explore how the Romans conquered large parts of what is now the Netherlands, built forts and military camps along the Rhine (the *limes*), and established their first real city here. This walk is about **stories, traces and layers of history**—and about seeing Nijmegen through Roman eyes.
🥾 **The walk is about 5 km** and will take us through nature, parks and the city while discovering the Roman past of Nijmegen and the Netherlands.

🍺 **Post-walk drinks at Cafe De Zon**
After the walk we’ll stop at **Cafe De Zon** to relax and have a drink together. It’s a perfect moment to chat, share impressions from the walk and wind down.
If you like beer, you’ll also have the chance to try **Oersoep**, a local craft brewery from Nijmegen known for its creative and experimental beers. Of course, other drinks are available as well.

A walk through **Roman history**, beautiful riverside views, and a relaxed drink afterwards — a perfect **Pastime afternoon**.

We talk about our projects, exchange tipps, but also just get to know each other and enjoy a relaxed Sunday morning in good company.
All ages, levels and crafts welcome! And don't be shy, we have newcomers most weeks!
**We have limited space at the café, so if you've RSVPd and can't make it, please cancel as early as possible so another person can join!**
We now also have a WhatsApp group, where we want to organise get-togethers and other events. Ask one of the organisers at the next Meetup you join for more information and access.

# FAQs
**Do all ideas have a chance at getting funded?**
Not all ideas will move forward after initial pitches on Saturday. Once pitches are complete, we’ll vote for top ideas and form teams around the 4 – 7 ideas with the most votes. You must recruit **at least four total team members** (including the founder) to move forward and have a chance at getting funded on Sunday. If your idea doesn’t move forward, you can join another team!
**Do I have to submit my idea online prior to the event?**
Unlike previous years, we don’t have the option to submit your idea online prior to the event. Instead, everyone will be going through a brainstorming exercise on Saturday that’ll help you prepare for your initial pitch.
**Will we be working for 24 hours straight?**
Nope. The event is split over two days. You’ll be building on Saturday and pitching on Sunday.
**Do I have to pitch an idea?**
Nope. You can also simply join a team.
**What types of entrepreneurs does GBH support?**
While GBH most often works with technology startups, we support *any* organization (for- or non-profit) that makes an impact on health in the US or across the world.

Data & Analytics Wednesday - The Data-Driven Brand
**The Data-Driven Brand: Using Analytics to Shape Perception**
Can you use analytics to improve tacos? This being CBUSDAW, we think the answer is probably “yes”, but we’re not sure how to implement or test this theory.
For our April meetup we’ve got Sara Kear, CMO of Condado Tacos, to investigate this delicious question. Sara will explore how she blends quantitative data and qualitative customer feedback to shape brand positioning and drive business decisions. We all know that marketing and analytics go way beyond attribution. Sara will show how Condado uses customer insights to inform product and pricing strategy.
She’ll also highlight how Condado leverages customer feedback at scale to influence operational priorities, positioning marketing as the voice of the customer across the organization. In the last 12 years Condado has gone from one location in Columbus to 52 locations across 10 states, so we’re guessing there’s more to that growth than really good guac (though the guac probably helps).
Ultimately, this talk focuses on the intersection of art and science—using data to inform creativity and build a brand that resonates with customers in a measurable way.
**About Our Speaker**
Sara Kear is Chief Marketing Officer at Condado Tacos, where she oversees brand, restaurant design, menu and pricing strategy, off-premise including catering, and customer data strategy. Since joining in 2021, she has helped grow the brand from 19 to 52 locations while building a data-driven marketing organization focused on loyalty and customer insights. Condado has since been named to the Inc. 5000, recognized as Breakout Retailer by Chain Store Age, and consistently ranked among FastCasual’s Top 100 Movers & Shakers.

Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
