NRWITBD 2026: Richard Appignanesi, Lenin for Beginners [1978]
[Fade in] The year is 2026. Picture this: industrial-scale war on multiple continents. Cities in ruins, millions dead and millions more made refugees - starvation, disease, mutilations, deportations, pogroms, genocides, dispossessions. Across every land, a working class on its knees before an ever-shrinking class of oligarchs with an ever-growing pile of treasure, weapons and slaves - determined to pit brother against brother in endless wars for resources that can only end when the whole earth is a toxic wasteland. And what they call "peace" is not much better.
This is the brutal present, a [Second Gilded Age,](https://fortune.com/article/gilded-age-coming-back-layoffs-pay-inequality-labor-unions-ceos-billionaires-worker-pay/) but we could travel back a hundred years and describe more or less the exact same scene. In the century since Lenin lived and walked the earth, less has changed than the eternal optimists - Panglossian techno-liberals like Steven Pinker and the other intellectuals of the Epstein class - would like us to think. Really, we're back where it all began in the *First* Gilded Age of the late 19th and early 20th century: on the outside looking in, asking the age-old question: what is to be done? Things are really getting quite bad. No, really - what is to be done!!?
In our gatherings of late, we've been tinkering around the edges of a few answers. Prior Lenin readings as well as our exploration of the Yan'an Forum and our whistle-stop tour through the last twenty years of street protests with Vincent Bevins have given us some things to chew on. Now there's been a clamour from plenty of regulars, as well as a few newcomers, that we continue to pull at the vital thread that seems to be running through all our discussions and see where it might lead us: namely, the revolutionary theories of Lenin.
This will be a series of readings running every other Thursday night in Whitechapel. We'll start with something a little unusual for us: Richard Appignanesi's *Lenin for Beginners,* an illustrated guide to Lenin's life and thought designed for newcomers to Lenin and the Russian Revolution. Despite having lots of pictures and goofy cartoons, it's very much not dumbed down - it simply provides an accessible intro to concepts which can seem obscure in Lenin's own writing (given translation issues and the old-world style of a man from the 19th century).
Find the text here (uploaded by me personally to Riseup Share, an encrypted service): https://share.riseup.net/#sk4GQeoLBxlb5U-Dn9D19w
With *No, Really: What is to be done?,* we'll be taking a deep dive into revolutionary Marxism with a read-through of texts like Lars Lih's *Lenin rediscovered: what is to be done? in Context,* non-standard biographies like Carter Ellwood's *Non-Geometric Lenin: Essays on the Development of the Bolshevik Party 1910-1914* as well as some articles, essays and discussion prompts which most readers likely won't have encountered before.
Take care and happy reading!
C++ in Finance : an experts round-table
This might be the first time we've had two events in one month!
We have a special *second* March event with a panel of experts from Citadel Securities who will discuss what it's *really* like using C++ in financial systems. The event is timed to be just before the WG21 (C++ standards committee) meeting the following week, so we have some big visiting names.
**Citadel Securities** will be hosting this one and providing a larger venue (the same place they hosted us last summer) with drinks and snacks. Thanks Citadel!
**For this venue we need to collect full names and email addresses** so they can send you a QR code to get in. You will also be sent terms & conditions via Docusign.
The data will only be used for this purpose and not published anywhere or used for other purposes.
Please note that the QR code will be sent from **[notify@22bishopsgate.com](mailto:notify@22bishopsgate.com)** (a send-only address).
If you'd like to speak at a future event please get in touch at [cppldn.uk/speak](http://cppldn.uk/speak).
**Here's the approximate schedule:**
**18:30** *Doors open*
**19:00** "Intro and news" - *Phil Nash*
**19:10** Lightning talks

* Gasper Azman – *std::execution*

Herb, Timur, Gasper, Juan and Carl stay with us for a panel, moderated by Allie Tamburro, on the topic of, "*What it’s really like using C++ in financial systems/industry"*

\-\-\-
**About the speakers**
*Herb* is a technical fellow at Citadel Securities, designer of several Standard C++ features, and chair of the ISO C++ committee and the Standard C++ Foundation. His current interest is simplifying C++.
*Juan* is a seasoned professional with a rich background in finance and technology. He has a specific focus on C++, and serves as a member of the ISO C++ Standards Committee (WG21) and Vice-Chair for INCITS Programming Languages, US.
His expertise extends to developing high-frequency electronic trading systems, with a focus on derivatives and financial markets. His academic foundation is in computer science and electrical engineering.
*Timur* is a software engineer specialising in low-latency and real-time C++. He works at Citadel Securities and is an active member of the ISO C++ standard committee, where he has (co-)authored many successful proposals including [[assume]], std::inplace_vector, and contract assertions.

Currently developing \`std::execution\` as the basis for general async in C++ and advancing contracts for a safer, more expressive language. What is Populism?
If nationalism calls for putting the nation first and socialism seeks the welfare of society, populism should be the project of empowering the people. But isn’t that what democracy already does?
The recent spread of populism as a political concept tells us that the democratic ideal is losing its credibility, and this disaffection should question Communalists and Left Libertarians.
But who are the populists? What is it they want? Are they allies or unwanted diversions in the cause Left Libertarians support?
As a starting point for the discussion, we'll use this article: *[The difference between right- and left-wing populism](https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2017/1/17/the-difference-between-right-and-left-wing-populism)*

Philosophy in the Park 135 (in The Barbican)
Philosophy in the Park is a philosophical discussion group. Open to all. No previous philosophical experience necessary.
We will meet in the Barbican Centre on Level Minus 1. Outside The Hall.
Here's how it works:
* At the start of each hour vote on which questions to discuss. You can vote for more than one question if you'd like. The questions with the most votes are the questions we discuss.
* We then break up into groups and each group does a different question. The question is just a starting point and it's cool if you go on tangents and up end talking about different things. You're welcome to join in and participate or if you'd prefer you're welcome to sit back and enjoy the conversation.
After an hour we all come back together, take a quick break and then repeat all over again. So in 3 hours we go around 3 times.
The aim is to have fun, meet new people, generate interesting and thought-provoking conversations, have your horizons expanded, challenge your preconceptions and who knows - you might even learn something?
In order to make the conversations as fun, interesting and productive for everyone as possible please follow these simple guidelines:
1. Keep it Philosophical
(No Science, no History, no Evolutionary Psychology, no contestable facts, personal anecdotes etc).
2. Think for Yourself
(No phones, no looking up definitions, no name dropping Philosophers / books you've read).
3. Tangents are Cool
(Don't worry too much if the subject drifts and you don't answer the question).
4. Keep it Succinct
(Like this).
5. Be Excellent to Each Other
(But of course).
Philosophy is about conceptual analysis. It's thinking about thinking. It's not about empiricism or the real world. It's about abstractions, concepts and ideas.
To terms of the right attitude: It's not about debating and trying to win - it's about listening to people and working collaboratively to increase our collective understanding.
No homework or prior knowledge or reading is necessary - simply come and enjoy the discussions.
After the event finishes we have an area reserved in The Shakespeare pub which is just around the corner from the Barbican. You are very welcome to join us if you'd like.
If you would like to submit a question please join the Whatsapp group. Question submissions take place on the Thursday before the meeting.
We hope to see you there.
Nice one.

LCC Visits SOAS: Mughal Banaras: Forgotten Histories in a Troubled Present
We will be visiting the SOAS gallery (University of London) to check out their exhibition on its last day.
**Event Plan**:
We will meet at the front of the gallery by 3pm. We will post an update in the comments on exact whereabouts if people have trouble finding us.
We will aim to finish going through the exhibition before 5pm. We’ll stay together as a group while visiting the exhibition, but if you’d like to check anything out individually, feel free to do so and rejoin us later: we’ll be sharing our location throughout the event.
After finishing a tour of the exhibition, we’ll gather for a relaxed debrief and social at either Russel Square or pub nearby (we will keep you posted on the location in person and in the event page). This will be a chance to hang out, connect, and share experiences together.
**Please note the exhibition itself is free and no tickets are required to be purchased to view the same.**
**The Exhibition: Mughal Banaras: Forgotten Histories in a Troubled Present**
"Banaras, or Varanasi, in north India, is widely known as a Hindu pilgrimage city where devout pilgrims aspire to visit its temples or be cremated on the famous stepped terraces, or ghats, beside the river Ganges.
This photography exhibition looks beyond this dominant perception, drawing attention to the city’s diverse communities and their profound role in shaping its rich history and urban heritage over the centuries, which are often overlooked in more familiar representations of the city.
This exhibition throws light on Banaras’s rich Mughal past and present by going beyond the riverfront into the hidden lanes, neighbourhoods and sites associated with the ‘later’ Mughals, in particular Crown Prince Jahandar Shah, son of Emperor Shah Alam II. Jahandar Shah (1749–1788) was granted refuge in Banaras by the British, after fleeing courtly intrigues in Delhi. In 1788, he suddenly died and was buried in a place called Badshah Bagh.
Without the protected status of early Mughal monuments, these sites remain marginalized and invisible in the public eye. Drawing on the collaboration between historian Malavika Kasturi and architect and photographer Jateen Lad, these photographs present everyday moments at these sites. Extensive archival research intertwined with religion, politics, architecture, urbanism and conservation highlight their enduring value and multiple fragilities.
In today’s charged political environment, the Mughals are misrepresented in the public domain. Troubling arguments over contested claims and ever-present threats of demolition take aim at their built heritage. These photographs were taken in July 2023 and August 2024 during periods of heightened tensions in Banaras. Captured on mobile phones and compact cameras, they evoke a lingering atmosphere of unease and delicate uncertainty. In bringing together these sites of forgotten histories, this exhibition aims to further enrich understanding of the past and present of one of India’s most significant cities."
More details can be found in the exhibition webpage here: https://www.soas.ac.uk/about/event/mughal-banaras-forgotten-histories-troubled-present

Cine: Se permuta (House of Swap) - Cuba
La película empieza a las 16.20 no hay publicidad ni trailers de otras películas antes.
Después de la película nos tomaremos algo para compartir nuestras impresiones.
Screened in partnership with [Screen Cuba](https://www.thegardencinema.co.uk/partner/screen-cuba/)
Juan Carlos Tabío, Cuba, 1983, 103m.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with special guests from Cuba, distinguished cinema actors Mirtha Ibarra and Eslinda Núñez.
This film heralded a new genre of sociocritical comedy in Cuba and was the debut feature of director Juan Carlos Tabio. It is full of Cubanisms – popular everyday problems, language and attitudes of that era and a range of characters from an idealist architect to an opportunistic bureaucrat.
Gloria wants her adult daughter to find a husband she considers a “good match” and engineers a chain of house swaps to move to a “better neighbourhood” to make things go her way, but her daughter has different ideas and wants to love who she wants. It examines the desire to get ahead in a society that says everyone is equal but also celebrates the resourcefulness with which people solve their own problems.

Friday night social: Let's go to scene 75!
We’re heading back to Scene75 on Friday, March 27 for a high-energy night of laser tag, mini golf, go-karts, arcade games, and whatever chaos we decide to get into.
We’ve done this one before and it was a blast — great turnout, tons of laughs, and just the right mix of competition and hanging out. If you missed it last time, this is your shot.
🎯 What to Expect:
Laser tag battles
Mini golf challenges
Go-karts (for those who need speed)
Arcade games & game cards
You can load however much you’d like onto a game card. Most people will probably be good with $15–$30, but it’s totally up to you.
This is a super casual event — show up, jump into whatever looks fun, rotate groups, and hang out. No pressure, no complicated structure. Just a solid Friday night with good people.
Also… I haven’t hosted in a bit and I’m making a push to be more active again. If you’ve got ideas for future events you’d love to do, bring them. I’m all ears.
Let’s run it back. 🔥

Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM.
It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily. I'll try to have signs outside Marian Hall that Identify our group. We hope to have you join us!

COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process.
Fast track
• Arrange a time to shadow a COUNT volunteer. Call Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558 (cell).
• Show up and try it out.
• Complete application, etc. later.
Normal process
• Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/).
• Attend orientation in advance.
• At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility.
• Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM.
• Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895).
The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014.
Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
