[In-person] Curiosity Café: Imagination
Imagination is our capacity to represent things beyond our immediate physical experience, from possible worlds to abstract ideas or stories. While Blaise Pascal saw imagination as a “mistress of error” leading us astray, other philosophers such as Robin Kelley believe in what he dubs “Radical Imagination.” Specifically, he thought that “imagination can [help us to] … see the future in the present.” So is imagination best conceived of as a useful mental tool, or a vehicle for error and escapism?
In our first Curiosity Café of 2026, we will be reflecting on our own experiences with imagination. To do so, we’ll ask questions like: What are the positive and negative influences that imagination has on our lives? *What is the difference between fantasy, idealization, and catastrophization?* What sorts of functions might they serve? Considering notions of utopia and moral progress, does imagination play a role in politics and society? Is collective imagination possible?
Join us on January 20th for this discussion, co-moderated by returning guest Beatrice Turner and our very own Marybel Menzies, to explore many of the fascinating ways we use imagination in our daily lives, on large and small scales.
**Space is limited!** **Please obtain a “Pay-What-You-Can” ticket from Curiosity Café at [this link (click here)](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/curiosity-cafe-imagination-tickets-1980423462889) to attend this event. You need a ticket to be admitted.** See the above link for more info about tickets and other options including a limited number of free tickets. Come and hang out with us, grab food, and read through our handout from 6-6:30pm. Our structured discussion will run from 6:30-8:30pm with a 10 minute break in the middle.
Hope to see you there!

About the Curiosity Café Series:
For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to join us at our Curiosity Cafés and are wondering what they’re all about: every two weeks, we invite members of our community to come out to the Madison Avenue Pub to engage in a collaborative exploration of our chosen topic. Through these events, we aim to build our community of people who like to think deeply about life’s big questions, and provide each other with some philosophical tools to dig deeper into whatever it is we are most curious about.

House Concert in Rockville: Daniel Neihoff & Eryn Michel
**Daniel Neihoff** is an *emerging singer/songwriter from Paducah, KY*. He has been described as “one of the best storytelling songwriters in Nashville.”
Daniel grew up in a family of songwriters, with both his father and grandmother crafting melodies and lyrics. He wrote his first song at 8 years old, surrounded by a family fit for country songs – the old kind about struggle and lonesomeness, mistakes among enduring love. The melodies and legends were all around him in his family, and it all seeped in.
His accolades are impressive: he won the Kerrville New Folk Competition in 2019, was a 3-time finalist of Songwriter Serenade, placed 3rd in the Woody Guthrie songwriter contest, and won the Rocky Mountain Songwriters Contest in 2023. Neihoff has also been featured on PBS and received praise from Lori Walsh, host of In The Moment on SDPB, who said, “Daniel Neihoff, you are just what we need.”
**Eryn Michel**’s songwriting walks the tightrope between real-life mess and wild imaginings—like her life, you’ll never be quite sure whether she’s singing truth, fiction, or a generous splash of both, drawn from a résumé that almost sounds made up: convoy gunner in Iraq, staffer in the Obama White House, phlebotomist, janitor, wedding planner, voice actor, and private security for a king’s granddaughter.
Her songs have earned her the 2024 Bernard/Ebb Songwriting Grand Prize and a two American Songwriter lyric contest wins.
**Reserve your seat by paying Scott Moore at [Moore Music in the House](https://www.mooremusic.org/). Suggested in-person contribution is $30.00. All proceeds go to the artists.**
**At 6:00 pm**, I will be seated at the [Outta the Way](https://www.outta.com/) Cafe in Derwood. I'll bring a Meetup sign. Consider joining me before going to Scott and Paula's house. The cafe is 8 minutes away from our music venue. At Scott and Paula's house, I will be the tall woman with grey hair and a dark mask. I will ask Scott to reserve our seats together. **Please,** either let me know that you have not reserved a seat or you intend to not show up.
