social pool hangout in downtown toronto! 🎱🔥
**Social Pool Night in Downtown Toronto (King & Spadina)**
**Details:**
📍 FunMix Downtown
393 King St W, Toronto
🕕 Monday, April 20th
7:00PM - 9:30PM
💲 $20 per person (**Cash or ET to dean@tbcpool.org**)
Join us for a relaxed and social evening of pool right in the heart of downtown. Whether you're wrapping up your workday nearby or just looking for something different to do in the city, this meetup is designed for people who enjoy good conversation, a bit of friendly competition, and a lively atmosphere.
Hosted at FunMix Billiards, ESports and Mahjong, a modern and vibrant space just off King & Spadina, this event brings together a mix of players of all levels. You don’t need to be experienced — most people come to meet others, rotate through games, and enjoy the environment.
Unlike our more community-style neighborhood events, this downtown session has a more social flow, with players rotating frequently so you’ll have the chance to meet a variety of people throughout the night.
**What to expect:**
* Drop-in friendly pool games (8-ball primarily)
* Rotating play so everyone gets involved
* A mix of beginners, casual players, and regulars
* Music, energy, and a central downtown setting
*
Come solo or bring a friend — most people show up on their own and quickly find a group to play with.

CFI Toronto Hangout: Mondays
As I looked under CFI’s Mission, Vision, and Values, the phrase ‘**community**’ stood out in the opening line. Then, I found it repeated seven more times, all within a short description.
Elsewhere, CFI informs us we run ‘open’ and ‘friendly’ discussions in ‘safe and hospitable’ environments for everyone. And 'Critical Thinking' is, you might say, the backbone for starting any discussion.
But while we all know what thinking is, how is **critical thinking** different? Especially in matters that are not quantitatively measurable?
As humans, thankfully, we are born curious – we probably won’t have learnt to crawl on four to experience our body and the world around us. We all are capable of being forever-curious – and therefore seeing through the evidence methodically. That is a good start for any talk no matter how complex it may seem. If it’s a human problem, we may not solve it, but surely can think through it critically. That’s a big, and hopeful, first step!
Tantalizing? Let’s Talk!

Hands-on Lab: Getting started with OpenTelemetry
**BRING YOUR COMPUTERS TO THIS EVENT! And check out the prerequisites below.**
Join us for the first hands-on lab session, snacks, and discussion! This time around instead of talks we are going to run a free hands-on lab on how to get started with OpenTelemetry.
We'll teach you how to run your own local observability stack and how to capture telemetry from the host all the way to the application layer.
**Repository**
https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
**Prerequisites**
* Git
* Docker and Docker Compose — or Podman with the `docker compose` CLI, see [PODMAN.md](https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation/blob/main/PODMAN.md) for setup
Pull all Docker images at home before the session to avoid slow WiFi at the event:
git clone https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
cd grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
docker compose pull
docker compose up --build
The first build downloads images and compiles both services — it can take several minutes. Once images are cached, rebuilds are fast. See [TROUBLESHOOTING.md](https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation/blob/main/TROUBLESHOOTING.md) in the repository if you hit issues.
**Again special thanks to Nokia and Mark Prosser for hosting us at their downtown office.**
**Agenda:**
6:00-6:15 PM: Arrivals and introductions
6:15-7:40 PM: Hands-On Lab
7:40-8:00 PM: Q&A, networking and wrap up
**Facilitators:** Nikola Grcevski and Marylia Gutierrez
French at the Royal Conservatory
Join us for an evening of French conversation at B Espresso Bar in the atrium of the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music (near St. George station)!
We welcome all levels of French, and it's free\*.
Venez pratiquer votre français!
\*While there is no fee to attend this event, guests are expected to purchase something from B Espresso Bar, in accordance with RCM's restrictions on usage of the cafe atrium space.
**Building location:**
The Royal Conservatory is at 273 Bloor St W, between Varsity Stadium and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). There are entrances off Bloor St. and Philosopher's Walk. If you enter from Bloor St through the large glass doors, follow the hallway on the left beside the staircase and turn left at the end. (Closest TTC: St. George)
**Notes and restrictions:**
The host may or may not attend this event. Attendees are encouraged to seat themselves at two or more adjacent tables, as needed. Please form groups of 6 people at each table; do not rearrange chairs and tables to accommodate more people, as this obstructs the narrow walking space. Guests are expected to order something from the cafe, and are asked to please refrain from bringing outside food or drink. Attendees must leave the building at 8pm when the cafe stops serving.
**Contributions:**
If you are a regular with us and would like to support the group, please send any contributions by e-transfer to [diskutomeetup@gmail.com.](http://diskutomeetup@gmail.com.) Mob Programming at Mofer Coffee
Let’s do some coding together at a cafe! No more working alone in the weekend. Here, we write code together. And I mean together together. Not occupying-the-same-space-but-separate together.
Here’s how it works: Jennifer brings her mobile app project, tells everyone that it is like Pinterest for recipes and she’d like to work on the nav bar. Paul and Chloe think Jennifer's project is fascinating, and they join the group. They gather around Jennifer’s laptop and work on the nav bar for 2 hours. Jennifer is the one typing out the code while Paul and Chloe research, brainstorm, and offer suggestions.
If you’re feeling stuck on your own project or need a motivation boost, bring it to mob programming!
Want to learn by watching how others code and solve problems? Join someone else’s project at this event!
Oh and we love your half-done projects that you are a bit embarrassed to share. Absolutely bring those to the event!
**Discord**:
We use Discord to share screen & code snippets during the event. Also feel free to share your projects here before the event!
https://discord.gg/xwjDdVSw3E
**Event policy**:
* We have 0 tolerance for harassment.
* We don’t allow the projects that are not meant to be shared in public such as school assignments, interview tasks, or trade secrets.
* The goal is to write code. We discourage you from pitching business ideas here, doing code reviews, or spending the whole event on planning what to do.
* Please buy a drink, and tip the barista well.

Prairie PostgreSQL User Group: Proudly Sources at Midwest!
Dear Illinois Prairie PUG members,
Thank you to everyone who attended PG DATA 2026! The conference is over, but our meetups are back, and more Postgres content is coming!
Those of you who attended our May meetup are already familiar with our new (hopefully permanent) location. For others, please note that we will meet at **Chicago Innovations, 1 W. Monroe**.
This time, we are trying a two-talk format.
\- Zach Paden will present the talk **Declarative schema management with pgschema.**
\- Anna Bailliekove will present the talk **PostGIS Quick Start**
More details on talks and speakers coming soon!
*Agenda*
5:20 - doors open
5:30 - pizza arrives
6:00 - 6:10 - Hettie D. Opening remarks
6:10- 6:40 - Zach. Declarative schema management with pgschema.
6:45 - 7:10 Anna: PostGIS Quick Start
7:10 - 7:50 - Open discussion and networking
7:50 - 8:00 - Cleanup time and closing
**Speaker**: Zach Paden
Zach Paden is a tech lead at Symetra with experience ranging from scrappy startups, consulting, to large regulated enterprises. His work spans data platform, analytics and application development where he’s seen more than his fair share of projects get bogged down or catch on fire due to their schema management practices.
**Talk Title:** *Declarative schema management with pgschema*
**Talk description**
Lots of app devs struggle to understand the concept of versioning database migrations, and managing the history of these migrations can become difficult even with existing tools. Using pgschema you can write pure-sql decoratively and let pgschema derive a series of valid online migrations.
**Speaker:** Anna Bailliekova
Anna Bailliekova has been moving data around professionally for 15 years. Currently a staff engineer XeoMatrix, she focuses on helping organizations mature their data engineering practice, optimization problems, and geospatial data applications.
**Talk title:** PostGIS Quick Start
**Talk description**
PostgreSQL provides rich support for geospatial computing; using transportation examples, we will take a brief tour of these features for those who want to but have been scared to try.
*Notes about our new venue*.
I am delighted to have an independent venue for the first time since I am hosting the meetups. I hope that this will be our permanent home. And as you all know, with more freedom comes more responsibilities.
\- You will notice the change in the RSVP form\.
\- We are thankful to our hosts and promise to be responsible\.
\- We comply with the [PostgreSQL Code of Conduct](https://www.postgresql.org/about/policies/coc/).
\- We do not want to waste food\, so please indicate your dietary preferences\.
\- We will not close RSVPs on the morning of the meetup\, but please do your best to RSVP in advance so we can order the appropriate amount of food and drinks\.
\- We want to start offering **on-site daycare**. If you indicate on your RSVP that you are planning to use daycare, we will contact you closer to the event with more information.
This meetup will be hybrid - please don't forget to indicate whether you are attending in-person or virtually.
Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you all at our new location!
