Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
If you have read Slaughterhouse-Five, you already have a sense of what to expect from Breakfast of Champions. In this novel, Kurt Vonnegut dissects himself through some of his most beloved characters, Kilgore Trout — an aging science-fiction writer whose stories are often about *a tragic failure of communication.* One of the stories plot goes like this: **The Dancing Fool** A flying saucer creature named Zog arrived on Earth to explain how wars could be prevented and how cancer could be cured. He brought the information from Margo, a planet where the natives conversed by means of farts and tap dancing. Zog landed at night in Connecticut. He had no sooner touched down than he saw a house on fire. He rushed into the house, farting and tap dancing, warning the people about the terrible danger they were in. The head of the house brained Zog with a golfclub. Read the book, watch the film, or do both, and join and discuss this surreal darkly comic work. Scenic MTB Ride: Pfaffenthal → Mersch through the Castles + Train Return
We'll start from Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg train station (downstairs next to the bus stop "Pfaffenthal, Halte CFL Quai 1") and ride around 29 km, passing by the Grand-Château d'Ansembourg and Château Hollenfels. Expect a group-friendly pace with regular breaks to enjoy the scenery — no one gets left behind. 🚴 **Who's it for?** Intermediate riders with basic off-road experience. This is a moderately challenging route — you should be comfortable riding on mixed terrain including singletrack and natural paths, with around 550 m of elevation gain. 🚲 **Bike requirement (important)** This ride includes off-road, singletrack, and unpaved terrain. A **mountain bike is required** (e-MTB is also fine). Gravel bikes with robust tyres may manage, but it will be demanding. ❌ City bikes / road bikes are **not suitable** for this route. ⚠️ **Note:** There is one short section (\~163 m) where cycling is not permitted — we'll walk our bikes through this part together. ⏳ **Duration:** \~2h 30min riding (excluding breaks) 🌿 🔗 **Komoot route:** [https://www.komoot.com/tour/2991730202?share_token=a63fVz4vi89mw43AT3dOsimnuGWb1lo5tBK2GLAOiy2Ai2v9yq&ref=wtd](https://www.komoot.com/tour/2991730202?share_token=a63fVz4vi89mw43AT3dOsimnuGWb1lo5tBK2GLAOiy2Ai2v9yq&ref=wtd) 🚆 **Return:** Train back to Luxembourg from Mersch (\~25 min, regular service) 🥙 **Food:** We usually stop for a kebab at destination before taking the train back, but this is up to you :) It's advised to bring water and snacks for the way. ⚠️ **Important:** This is a casual group ride, not a guided tour. You are responsible for your own safety and equipment. Helmet required. Ride within your limits. Looking forward to riding together! 🚴‍♂️🏰

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for July is "Shoes" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
