The role of the STATE, your NANNY or not? Nudging? behavioral economics? FORCE?
**âThe Role of the State (!) â Nanny, Neutral Referee, or Quiet Manipulator?â**
Freedom, Responsibility, Behavioral Economics, and Who Really Decides
The modern state no longer just taxes, regulates, and enforces laws. It nudges. It designs choices. It subtly shapes behaviorâoften in the name of health, safety, equality, or efficiency. But where is the line between helping citizens and controlling them?
This isnât a leftâright debate or a policy seminar. Itâs a philosophical conversation about power, freedom, and the assumptions we make about human behavior.
***
**Topics weâll touch on:**
* Is the ânanny stateâ a mythâor a growing reality?
* Behavioral economics: helping people choose better, or bypassing free will?
* Are nudges respectful guidanceâor soft coercion?
* Who decides what âgood behaviorâ actually is?
* Can freedom survive if choices are engineered?
* Do people need protection from themselvesâor from the state?
* And ultimately⊠what kind of citizens does this model create: autonomous adults or well-managed subjects?
Casual discussion. No background in economics or political theory requiredâjust curiosity and a willingness to reflect honestly. Whether you value strong institutions, personal freedom, or feel torn between the twoâyouâre not alone.
Letâs examine the invisible hands shaping our choicesâand ask how much guidance we really want.

The topics we will vote to discuss are Motivation, Fear and Overconfidence.
2 emotion topics and 1 personal challenges topic to vote for discussion.

Some people like to talk, some like to listen, at the start of each event, declare if you would prefer to participate in the discussion or prefer to listen in and chime in with an occasional question.
If only danish speaking people are coming we will speak danish, if there are non danish speaking people coming we will speak English.

Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association:
They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other churchâstate issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEAâs early wins and hard lessons, what weâre seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape â and practical ways to get involved.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
