The Neuroscience of Habits and Decision Making (SOLD OUT)
Much of what we do each day doesn’t come from conscious choice. We follow routines, repeat behaviours, and make decisions on autopilot, often without realising when or how the decision was made.
**[Tickets must be purchased in advance via LUMA here: from 9 euros](https://luma.com/d4dhst3l?utm-source-meetup)**
In this Growth Lab Live workshop, we explore how the brain generates behaviour and why some actions feel intentional while others happen automatically.
Drawing on recent scientific findings, the session breaks down the different learning systems in the brain that drive planning, skill acquisition, and habit formation, each operating under its own rules.
We’ll examine why habits are so persistent, why willpower often fails, and how behavioural patterns become reinforced over time. The talk also looks at what happens when these systems compete, and how this tension shapes everyday choices, from simple routines to high-stakes decisions.
By understanding how these decision-making processes work, we can begin to design environments, cues, and habits that work with the brain’s natural learning mechanisms rather than against them. The result is greater clarity, better decisions, and more control over the patterns that quietly shape our lives.
**About the speaker:**
Hernando Martinez is a neuroscientist whose work focuses on how the brain learns, forms habits, and turns experience into behaviour. With a background spanning biotechnology, bioinformatics, and cell and developmental biology, they bring a rare, systems-level perspective to understanding how decisions emerge from neural circuits.
They completed their PhD at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), where they studied the evolution of the nervous system and helped build large-scale maps of gene expression and brain connectivity. This was followed by postdoctoral research at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre in London, investigating how dopamine and striatal circuits shape learning and behaviour.
Since 2024, they have been a Ramón y Cajal Fellow in the Brain Circuits and Behaviour Laboratory, where their research explores the neural computations that drive learned behaviours. Using behavioural experiments, targeted neural interventions in animal models, and mathematical modelling, they aim to uncover the mechanisms that determine why we repeat certain actions, form habits, and make decisions automatically.
**Agenda:**
* Doors open: 7.15pm
* Workshop starts: 7.30pm
* Q&A session: 8.30pm

🎤 **Talks & Speakers**
* **Title: DevOps in Space: Lessons from Low Earth Orbit**
* **Speaker**: **David Jacovkis**
* **Duration**: 30-45 mins
* **About:** I started as a sysadmin when workloads ran on bare metal, and Devs were the enemies of Ops. The industry changed, and we changed with it, but at the end of the day, we're still the ones who receive an alert when things stop working.
* **Abstract**: Remember when you knew all your servers by name and deployed changes with a single SSH command? Now imagine doing that when your link comes in 10-minute windows every few hours, and bandwidth is a precious commodity measured in kbps. Welcome to DevOps in Space. At Sateliot, our Infrastructure & Software Engineering team works at the intersection of aerospace, telecommunications and software. We build modern distributed systems and then send them to an environment where normal expectations -low latency, immediate feedback, up-to-date systems- simply don’t apply. In this talk I’ll give a high-level tour of the challenges that make space and telco different: intermittent and low-bandwidth connectivity, long feedback loops, constrained devices, and the cultural gaps between aerospace, telco and software teams. I'll also share some adaptations that allow us to apply some of the DevOps processes and tools that have become industry standards.

* **Title: Rats in my pipeline! The never-ending story of supply chain attacks**
* **Speaker**: Davinci Lisapaly
* **Duration**: 30-45 mins
* **About:** I'm a software engineer turned security engineer. I ensured product teams are shipping secure code without blocking them. Also, have a curse for incidents happening while walking my dog.
* **Abstract:** In the day and age of micro services, every 10 lines of code have their own pipeline. Not only is it a challenge from a reliability perspective, but also within the security domain. Most of the code we ship isn't even ours. How do we make sure that the code is safe? How do we make sure we can trust the dependencies we import? How do we prevent RATs from slipping into our production environments and stealing all our cheesy secrets and tokens? This presentation will explain, through real-world supply chain incidents, what these rats are and how we can detect and prevent them from even entering our pipelines.

Charla sobre Constelaciones Familiares (Evento Online - Gratuito)
Favor confirmar através del WhatsApp +351914149287
Tema:

From Web Forms to Web Components - Burton Smith
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you.
The building address is 4450 Bridge Park
The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400
**Abstract**
Web Forms gave .NET developers a powerful abstraction for building reusable UI controls long before design systems were a thing. Web Components finally bring that same idea to the browser natively.
This session explores how the Web Forms mindset translates into Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, and HTML templates. We’ll examine how Web Components enable design systems that work across frameworks, how they differ from server‑driven controls, and why they’re becoming a foundational layer for modern UI. Whether you’re maintaining legacy apps or building greenfield projects, you’ll leave with a practical understanding of how to apply familiar patterns in a modern, standards‑based way.

Connected Westerville Night of Networking!
**Connected Westerville Night of Networking** *April Edition: The Introduction Economy*
You've been to the networking events. You've done the small talk. Collected the cards. Forgotten the names. And walked out feeling like you just wasted two hours of your life.
The problem isn't you. It's the format.
Most networking events put you in a room and tell you to figure it out. So everyone defaults to elevator pitches and business talk, and nothing real gets built.
Here's the truth about networking that most people miss: Your network isn't just who you know. It's who thinks of you when they're talking to someone else.
*That's* The Introduction Economy. And it only works when relationships are real.
There's a reason people who come once keep coming back. It starts with seven minutes that feel nothing like networking.
Then we open it up. Free networking. More conversations. More momentum.
This is a room full of corporate professionals, entrepreneurs, business owners, creatives, and career builders in the Westerville and Columbus area. The mix is the magic.
You might never do business with everyone you meet tonight. But someone in this room will think of *you.* **By name**. So, the next time someone needs exactly what you do, you get the recommendation.
**April 14th. RSVP now.**
**When:** Tuesday\, April 14th \| 6:15 PM \-\- 8:00 PM **Where:** Vineyard Community Center \| 6000 Cooper Rd\, Westerville\, OH 43081
How LLMs Like ChatGPT Actually Work and How to Build With Them
**First meetup of the Columbus AI Engineering group.**
We’ll kick things off with a practical, beginner-friendly discussion on:
**How LLMs like ChatGPT actually work — and how to build real applications with them.**
We’ll cover:
* what’s actually happening under the hood (at a high level)
* why LLMs behave the way they do (hallucinations, prompt sensitivity, etc.)
* how people are building real systems with them today
* where things break in practice
This will be a **short, informal talk (\~15–20 min)** followed by open discussion and Q&A.
Whether you’re an engineer, builder, or just curious about how modern AI systems work, you’re welcome to join.
No slides, no fluff — just real conversation about real systems.
We’ll hang out afterward and get to know each other.
