[Special Edition - The Stories That Shaped You] This session, we are doing something different! You probably have experienced reading an amazing book and when you try to convey how amazing it is to your friends, they at most nod politely and say, "sounds interesting, I'll check it out", but they never do. You may have no one to share your excitement about how genius you think a book is, or how you feel so strongly about that *one* book which changed your life. Of course, there are book clubs which have assigned reading, but everyone has different tastes and the book you *really want to discuss* might not be selected for discussion, ever. So for this special edition of The Reading Hour, **bring your favourite book and share what your book means to you.** We will select **one** **chapter or short story,** and take turns going round the group to read the chapter out loud in its entirety. This allows for slower close-reading, and a deeper appreciation for what is being shared. Please come with one chapter of a book (or short story) that you think *everyone* needs to read. If you don't have a favourite book, that's also ok, just come and see what others share! Location: Botanic Gardens (Tanglin Entrance) Open space beside swan lake, beside the bamboo trees. Format: * 10 min: settle in * 15-30 min: we take turns sharing our favourite book and share why the book matters to us. * 30mins: group takes turns to read one chapter out loud * 30mins: reflections and sharing \*Ideally, don't come with a chapter in the middle of a multi-novel series like Harry Potter or Lord of The Rings; it will be hard for people to resonate without explaining the entire backstory. TLDR: bring **stand-alone chapters, essays, or short stories** and give a voice to the words, ideas, and stories you love.

🏛️ **WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?** Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎 Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic. The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌 📓 **HOW DOES IT WORK?** Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Hg7zL8ClpzM3agJCvw5HDS), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going. When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture. **General Meeting Agenda** Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline: * 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the ‘official' start. * 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines. * 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them. * 20:45-21:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo. * 21:00 - The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other. **🧧PRICING?** Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend! We just ask that if we are meeting in a café, buy a beverage! Some chapters rent a space for us to meet, and they may ask for donations to help contribute to the cost of rent. The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms. * Can I come alone? Of course you can, we encourage it :) * Can I be late? Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation. * Where do you meet? Regular boba tea meetup for people to meet, make new friends, or enjoy general conversations. Great for those who are new in town or find new activities to do! We will meet inside Ben Gong’s, and afterwards, at 9 pm, we’ll go next door to Taco Chinoz for dinner. Those who attend can join us for dinner if they like.

We’ll have a fire pit set up, along with s’mores and light snacks, so come ready to play, sip, and enjoy some cozy vineyard vibes. Bring your favorite board game to share — or just come ready to join in! ### Wine & Tastings Guests may purchase wine by the glass or bottle throughout the afternoon. We've done this event before and it was interesting and fun — and this time we've booked a private group tasting just for us! Tour this small chocolate factory and then taste a spectrum of flavors of (dark) single origin chocolate, with expert guidance very much like a wine tasting! There's also a small chocolate shop of course :) Cost is $25 per person (payable to me, I've reserved for a private group of 4 people and we can add more as we wish). The location is in Chantilly and not convenient to metro (though there is a bus). I am happy to pick up participants at the East Falls Church (if you're riding from downtown) or West Falls Church (if you want to park) metro stations, and it's about a 20-minute drive from there. It's recommended that you bring a bottle of water to cleanse your palate :) Hope you can join!
