In-Person Writing Sprints
In-Person Writing Sprints
Struggling with motivation and focus as you hammer away on your manuscript at home? Want to join a community of writers as we embrace the joys and pains (mostly pains) of writing together? Bring your laptop, pen & paper, old-school typewriter, or futuristic writing gadget, and join an enthusiastic community of science fiction and fantasy writers as we work on our current projects in the same space. The format will be similar to our online writing sprints: 30-minute blocks of focused, quiet writing time (the sprints), interspersed with breaks where we can chat, ask questions, and share our writing experiences.

We are now at **Yonge Sheppard Centre** in the **food court** near **Dazzle Mi**. All writers and all experience levels are welcome and don’t worry, no one will see what you've written. This session is about getting your writing done and meeting other writers in your area. Once everyone’s arrived, I will lead quick introductions and then set the timer for our quiet and focused writing session. Afterward, we’ll have time to chat and get to know each other. We often talk about our successes and challenges as writers. If you don’t have time to stick around, no worries! **A note about the format** We don’t host critiques or readings. Join us for a relaxed social walk through St. Clair West and the hidden enclave of Wychwood Park — one of Toronto's most unique and exclusive residential communities. Wychwood Park is private, residential, and unlike anywhere else in the city. The homes are all architecturally distinct — no cookie-cutter subdivisions here. Living in Wychwood Park involves a waiting list, board approval, and community guidelines designed to preserve the character of the neighbourhood. It feels almost village-like... peaceful, artistic, and slightly secret. This is not a formal historical tour. It's a social walk with beautiful surroundings, interesting neighbourhoods, and good conversation. 📲 **Join Our WhatsApp Group:**[ Click here to join](https://chat.whatsapp.com/DRFTkxRlHS4B3IL1lMleUd) *** 🚶‍♂️ What We'll Do We'll begin by walking west along St. Clair, taking in the neighbourhood and exploring some of the area's hidden gems. Along the way we'll stop at Dutch Dreams for ice cream — one of Toronto's most famous ice cream destinations. 🍦 From there we'll wander through the winding streets of Wychwood Park before making a stop at Artscape Wychwood Barns to browse the market and community space. Afterward, we'll make our way back toward St. Clair and finish at Grandma Loves You, a local favourite known for some of the best sandwiches in Toronto. 🥪 You are welcome to join us for food or continue back to the subway station. Sometimes the best part of these walks is simply discovering places you never knew existed. *** 🌦️ Weather & Expectations This event happens rain or shine. Blue Lotus Tea & Life Force and Light Language Activation Workshop
Blue Lotus Tea & Life Force and Light Language Activation Workshop
This class is a guided life force energy transmission designed to help participants deepen awareness, regulate the nervous system, release stored emotions, and connect more deeply with themselves. The practice combines life force activation, light language, somatic release, music therapy, and meditation in a safe, supportive environment. Blue Lotus Tea Blue Lotus tea will be served as an optional ritual element. It is non-psychedelic and only mildly psychoactive, helping participants relax the body, quiet the mind, and become more receptive to the experience. It supports the practice but does not create the activation itself. During the Session Participants lie down while receiving a guided energy transmission. Experiences vary and may include: * Gentle spontaneous body movement * Emotional release (laughing, crying, etc.) * Feelings of warmth, tingling, or energy movement * Deep relaxation or bliss * Visual imagery or meditative experiences * Vocal expression such as humming, singing, or spontaneous sounds (often described as light language) Intended Benefits Many participants report: * Greater emotional release and nervous system regulation * Increased self-awareness and clarity * Enhanced intuition and confidence * Breaking old patterns and limiting beliefs * Improved relationships and life direction * Greater creativity, resilience, and sense of purpose The emphasis is on personal growth, conscious awareness, and integration, rather than seeking dramatic experiences during the session itself. What is Light Language? Light language refers to spontaneous vocal, tonal, or gestural expression that some people experience during deep meditative or energetic states. It is viewed within this practice as an intuitive form of self-expression that may support healing, communication, and creativity. Preparation * Avoid alcohol or recreational drugs on the day of the class. * Eat lightly (fruit or juice) 1–2 hours beforehand. * Stay hydrated. * Meditation or gentle breathwork beforehand is encouraged. * Integration guidance will be provided after the session. Who Should Attend The class is open to adults seeking personal growth and self-exploration. IxDA Chat n Pancakes
IxDA Chat n Pancakes
You can sleep in on the Semiquincentennial (observed), we’re shifting to the following Friday. But join the local UX community for a chat and some biscuits to catch up. If you were in CA for Figma Config, tell us all the lines and you can tell me how I can animate an SVG without coding it by hand, and why I’d even want to. Thanks to the team at Nationwide of supporting the group.
Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Greetings writers! Come down and join your fellow wordsmiths for one hour of uninterrupted writing time in the upper level of the Market District Supermarket in Upper Arlington. The main entrance of the shopping center opens onto stairs/elevator leading up to the 2nd floor cafe section where we will have a table displaying a sign with the Shut Up & Write logo. Writing is largely a solitary craft. Practicing with others in a community setting may be the thing you need to fire your own routine. We’ll meet on Wednesday evenings, starting the clock at 6:30, following a brief period of introductions. This is solid writing time and all inclusive. Any project is acceptable, be it fiction, non -fiction, work or homework assignment. All is welcome and will remain private to you. The market boasts a Starbucks, a full service bar and various affordable food options. Parking is plentiful, free Wifi is provided as well as outlets for charging your devices, though they are somewhat limited, so plan accordingly. Show up as early as you like, or stay late. This group tends to socialize some, both before and after the alloted time, but this is not mandatory to you. Feel free to come and go as you please and late arrivals are welcome. The cafe may be noisy on occasion so headphones/ earbuds are reccommended as you see fit. Please try to RSVP if possible so that we may grab enough seats for all—the venue can be busy at times. Feel free to message me privately wth any questions and/ or concerns you may have. Happy writing!
Stop Guessing: How to Measure and Improve LLM Outputs
Stop Guessing: How to Measure and Improve LLM Outputs
Most people use LLMs by feel: ask a question, read the answer, decide whether it “seems good,” and move on. That works for casual use. It does not work when you are building software, automating workflows, writing important documents, or relying on AI for anything that needs to be repeatable. In this talk, we’ll look at how to improve and evaluate the inputs and outputs of LLMs using practical measurement techniques. We’ll cover how prompt changes affect results, how to compare outputs, how to build simple evaluation sets, and how math-based methods like similarity scoring can help you move beyond guesswork. This will be beginner-friendly, so even if you don't know anything about AI, you should get something out of it. However, this will be a little more technical than our intro talks. You do not need to be an AI researcher, but programmers and technically curious attendees will get a lot out of it. We’ll cover: * Why “it looks good” is not enough * How to improve prompts by changing the input, context, and constraints * How to compare LLM outputs more systematically * Basic evaluation techniques for accuracy, consistency, and usefulness * How embeddings, cosine similarity, and scoring can help evaluate results * Where automated evaluation works — and where humans still need to stay in the loop By the end, you’ll have a practical mental model for treating LLMs less like magic and more like systems you can test, measure, and improve. LOGISTICS AND PARKING: The talk starts at 7:00 PM. The first half hour is reserved for everyone to get set up and mingle. Free pizza and drinks! The cheapest parking option is to find street parking, which will only cost you a few bucks. Otherwise, park in the nearby veteran's museum lot for $8. It's highly recommended you avoid the nearby $15 garage parking.
