Intro Meetup + Exposure Triangle Basics
Intro Meetup + Exposure Triangle Basics
This will be a relaxed introduction session where we meet each other, talk about goals, and go over the fundamentals of the exposure triangle in a simple, practical way. Plan for the meetup: Welcome & Introductions (15 minutes) Quick intros, what you’re hoping to learn, and what camera you’re using (if any). Exposure Triangle Basics (15 minutes) A beginner-friendly breakdown of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and how they work together. No math, no overwhelm — just understanding what each setting actually does. Open Discussion (45 minutes) Questions about manual mode, common beginner challenges, what confuses you most, and what kinds of photography interest you. We’ll also plan our next event: a beginner-friendly photography hike at Rouge National Urban Park the following weekend, focused on light, composition, and practicing manual mode outdoors. Who this is for: Beginners and anyone learning manual mode. No experience required. What to bring: Any camera (DSLR, mirrorless, compact, or phone) and your questions. This group is collaborative and non-commercial. No service promotion or selling permitted.

[In-person] Curiosity Café: Paying Attention
[In-person] Curiosity Café: Paying Attention
Attention is as curious as it is multifaceted. It has been called [a currency](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8I4WkhG_GRM&ab_channel=TEDxTalks "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8I4WkhG_GRM&ab_channel=TEDxTalks"), the lack of it has been [pathologized](https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/adhd/what-is-adhd "https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/adhd/what-is-adhd"), and its span has [apparently been decreasing](https://www.apa.org/news/podcasts/speaking-of-psychology/attention-spans "https://www.apa.org/news/podcasts/speaking-of-psychology/attention-spans"). But what *is* attention, and what does it share with what are often understood as its synonyms, like ‘focus’, ‘concentration’, and ‘awareness’? What role does it play in our lives and why might we feel like its nature and extent have been changing with rapid technological innovation and the pace of modern life? The phrase ‘pay attention’ is perhaps more appropriate today than ever. Nowadays, if you watch a YouTube video, scroll through Instagram, or even walk down a busy street in your city, chances are you’ll see an ad. Our attention, however brief, is quite literally *paying* companies who sell our attention to marketing departments. Why is our attention so valuable? How much control do we have when it comes to the object(s) of our attention? How much responsibility do we have over what we pay attention to? Join us at our next Revisited Curiosity Cafe on Sunday, February 22nd, where we will engage in a collaborative exploration of the nature and extent of our attention and why attention is more valuable today than ever. **Space is limited!** **Please obtain a “Pay-What-You-Can” ticket from Curiosity Café at [this link (click here)](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/curiosity-cafe-revisited-paying-attention-tickets-1982649061715) to attend this event. You need a ticket to be admitted.** See the above link for more info about tickets and other options including a limited number of free tickets. Come and hang out with us, grab food, and read through our handout from 2-2:30pm. Our structured discussion will run from 2:30-4:30pm with a 10 minute break in the middle. Hope to see you there! ***___________________________________________________________________*** This event is brought to you by [Being and Becoming](https://beingnbecoming.org/), a Toronto based non-profit. We aim to create community around exploring everyday concepts and experiences so that we may live more intentional, thoughtful, and meaningful lives. We use philosophy as a tool with which we can come to a richer understanding of the world around us. By offering activities, spaces, and other opportunities for conversation and co-exploration, we hope to enable the meeting and fusion of individuals and their ideas. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background: indeed, we believe the journey is best undertaken alongside explorers from a variety of disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. Find out more about Being and Becoming [here](https://beingnbecoming.org/). About the Curiosity Café Series: For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to join us at our Curiosity Cafés and are wondering what they’re all about: every two weeks, we invite members of our community to come out to the Madison Avenue Pub to engage in a collaborative exploration of our chosen topic. Through these events, we aim to build our community of people who like to think deeply about life’s big questions, and provide each other with some philosophical tools to dig deeper into whatever it is we are most curious about.
🌿 Toronto Women’s Campfire Experience — Workshop + Social
🌿 Toronto Women’s Campfire Experience — Workshop + Social
This event is for women in their late 20s to 40s who want a real campfire experience in the city, shared in a small group of other nature-loving women. We’ll take part in a guided winter campfire experience led by a park educator, offering a more hands-on and immersive format than our usual walks. Downsview Park is one of Toronto’s most unique green spaces — once a Canadian Forces base, now a protected urban habitat where deer, coyotes, owls, and other wildlife are commonly seen. **What we’ll do** * Start with a short walk through the park to get moving and take in the winter landscape * Participate in a guided outdoor fire session, learning the basics of building and managing a campfire * Spend time gathered around the fire, roasting marshmallows and enjoying warm forest tea * Relax, talk, and enjoy being outdoors together Marshmallows are provided, including options suitable for vegan, vegetarian, kosher, and halal diets. **Why join** This is a special winter experience that blends learning, participation, and time in nature — all within the city. It’s ideal for women looking for something more intentional than a walk or café meetup, and who enjoy shared experiences that feel a little different and thoughtfully put together. Spots are limited. **Disclaimer**: This group is intended to provide a calm and enjoyable space for women to spend time outdoors together. Outdoor walking involves inherent risks, including uneven terrain, weather conditions, and the possibility of slips or falls. By joining, participants acknowledge and accept these risks and take full responsibility for their own safety and personal belongings. The organizer is not responsible for any injuries, accidents, losses, or damages that may occur during events. Participants are responsible for dressing appropriately, wearing suitable footwear, and assessing their own physical ability to participate. Photos may be taken during events for group memories or future promotional use. By attending, you consent to being included in these images unless you notify the organizer otherwise. Participants agree to respect the privacy of others and contribute to a positive, supportive environment. Please note that event fees are non-refundable.

The Decline of the British Empire
The Decline of the British Empire
Join us for a focused and engaging discussion on the decline of the British Empire, tracing its gradual unraveling from the aftermath of the First World War to the wave of decolonization that reshaped the global order in the mid-twentieth century. Once described as “the empire on which the sun never sets,” Britain presided over a vast network of territories spanning every continent. Yet within a few decades, economic exhaustion, nationalist movements, global war, and shifting geopolitical power eroded imperial authority. This session explores how and why a global superpower relinquished its empire—and what replaced it. **Topics for Discussion** * The Atlantic Charter and Self-Determination * The Independence of India and Pakistan * The Malayan Emergency * The Suez Crisis * The Windrush Generation * The Mau Mau Uprising * Decolonization in Africa (1950s–1960s) * The Transformation into the Commonwealth * The Falklands War * The Transfer of Hong Kong

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for March is "Our Bodies, Ourselves" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
