Profs & Pints DC: Ireland’s Fight for Freedom
**Sales for this talk have been reopened as it has been moved to a larger space in Penn Social to accommodate demand.**
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Ireland’s Fight for Freedom,”** with Kevin Matthews, assistant professor of history at George Mason University and former London correspondent for Vatican Radio reporting on British and Irish news.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-ireland-freedom](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-ireland-freedom) .]
After centuries of struggle, Irish men and women won their freedom from Great Britain after waging a war that set the pattern for all other independence struggles of the 20th century. But there was a price—the partition of their country, a split setting the stage for the Northern Ireland “Troubles” that didn’t end until 1998.
Gain a deeper understanding of Ireland and its history with Professor Kevin Matthews, a historian who served as a journalist covering the last stages of the Troubles in Ireland in the early and mid 1990s.
He’ll discuss in depth how the Irish won independence in a two-year war between 1919 and 1921, covering topics as the role women played in the conflict, the life and tactics of the revolutionary leader Michael Collins, and the Irish development of “urban guerilla warfare” using small, highly mobile armed units called “flying columns.”
Most important, this talk will examine how the conflict between Irish nationalists and Irish unionists led to Ireland’s division and later conflict. From the Easter Rising to the Good Friday Agreement, from Bloody Sunday to Brexit, this conflict has never quite gone away.
As the Irish poet, William Butler Yeats once wrote:
Now and in time to be,
Wherever green is worn,
Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.
Professor Matthews will explore how the Irish fought to a standstill what was then the mightiest empire in the world and how, more than he could have known, Yeats’ prediction still rings true today. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

· The Unknown Man of Shandigor · by Jean-Louis Roy ☼ online event
This production earns high Oddball marks for both style and content. Structured as if it’s a series of short films, each with its own title, it nonetheless tells the bizarre but coherent story of a scientist who invents a device that can “sterilize” or “cancel” atomic bombs. Apparently this means it renders them inert, although the specifics are never revealed. Daniel Emilfork, who was born to play mad scientists (he was Dr. Krank in The City of Lost Children), is the inventor, and after announcing his achievement, he retreats to his fortified villa and disdains any further contact with the outside world. Spies from various countries attempt to steal the plans with chaotic and often humorous results.

Caesar’s Conquest of Gaul
Sunday, March 22, 2026 - Luncheon at 2 pm; Lecture at 3 pm
**Caesar’s Conquest of Gaul**
**Jennifer Paxton – The Catholic University of America**
**The famous formulation that all Gaul was divided into three parts came from the self-serving pen of Caesar himself, whose conquest of Gaul served as the springboard for a quest for power that ended fatally on the Ides of March in 44 B.C.E.**
**Rome gradually acquired commercial and military interests in southern Gaul that provided the pretext for Roman intervention in the complicated politics of the region. Caesar then exploited internal divisions within Gaul to bring about the largest single acquisition of territory for Rome north of the Alps, a project that he conducted largely on his own initiative with only the grudging approval of the Roman Senate.**
**This event will be held at:**
**Lebanese Taverna**
**2001 International Drive at Mazza Gallerie First Floor**

NOVA Horror Club Discussion: Piranha (2010) AKA Piranha 3D
**NOTE: This is NOT a screening, please watch the movie before the discussion.**
*"They're organized, methodical. The first bite draws blood. The blood draws the pack."*
Spring has sprung, and Lake Victoria has just been hit by a tidal wave of college kids ready to cut loose: a week of boats, booze, and boobs as far as the eye can see. It's the perfect setup for an unforgettable week... but not for the reasons these co-eds expect.
An underwater tremor has just cracked the lakebed open, giving way to an ancient breeding ground. Thousands of primordial, razor-toothed piranha have been unleashed, and they're just *chomping at the bit* to join the party!
Directed by Alexandre Aja, *Piranha* is an absolute splatterfest that embraces its B-movie roots with unapologetic enthusiasm. Packed with outrageous set pieces, a knowing sense of humor, and literal record-setting amounts of gore, the film transforms creature-feature carnage into pure midnight-movie spectacle — where the body count is high, the blood flows freely, and subtlety is left on the shore.
*Piranha 3D* is streaming on Tubi.
Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: The Power of Folk Horror
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“The Power of Folk Horror,”** an exploration of an especially creepy subgenre in folklore and film, with Joshua Barton, lecturer in English at Virginia Commonwealth University and scholar of horror.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/arlington-folk-horror](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/arlington-folk-horror) .]
What makes a horror film scare really stick with you? Sometimes, it’s not monsters or jump-scares but the eerie feeling that something ancient, something forgotten, is still lurking just under the surface.
That’s the heart of folk horror, a subgenre that blends folklore, rural isolation, and rituals gone wrong. It takes the past—the truly forgotten past—and makes it come roaring back to bite us.
Venture into the strange and fascinating world of folk horror with Joshua Barton, who has earned a big following among Profs and Pints fans with excellent past talks on cryptids, ghosts, movie monsters, and other things that go bump in the night.
We’ll start by digging down to folk horror’s roots in classic British films like *The Wicker Man* and *Witchfinder General*, discussing how these stories introduced us to secretive villages, ominous woods, and old traditions that clash violently with the modern world.
We’ll move on to explore how folk horror has reemerged in recent hits like *The Witch,* *Midsommar*, and *Lamb*. What ties them all together? The feeling that history isn’t dead; it’s just been waiting.
Beyond the scares, this genre taps into something deeper. Folk horror asks what happens when we lose touch with our roots or when we get too close to them. It reflects fears about identity, nature, belief, and the things we can’t explain. And in an age of environmental anxiety, political division, and cultural upheaval, these stories are more relevant than ever.
By the end of the lecture, we’ll see that folk horror goes beyond surface-level eeriness. It’s a mirror for our collective anxieties and a reminder that the past is never as far away as we think. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Bad Girls Book Club March 2026
**Our March pick is *God of the Woods* by Liz Moore.**
**This month’s novel is an award-winning literary mystery that blends family drama with psychological suspense. It explores women’s voices and relationships while delivering an exciting, eerie, and deeply suspenseful story. The book is 576 pages in print or 14 hours and 35 minutes on audiobook.**
Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.
As a panicked search begins, a thrilling drama unfolds. Chasing down the layered secrets of the Van Laar family and the blue-collar community working in its shadow, Moore’s multi-threaded story invites readers into a rich and gripping dynasty of secrets and second chances. It is Liz Moore’s most ambitious and wide-reaching novel yet.
