*Sold out* The House Must Win matinée - musical (Pavillion, Dun Laoghaire)
*Sold out* The House Must Win matinée - musical (Pavillion, Dun Laoghaire)
**Written by Mick Flannery, *The House Must Win* is a gritty new musical drama** **that sweeps audiences into the emotional undertow of its story and song.** Please secure your own ticket for Sunday afternoon matinee performance. Welcome to include your seat number in the comments for others to purchase adjacent seats: I'm in seat D5. Legendary Irish comedian, actor and broadcaster **Tommy Tiernan** will make his musical theatre debut in the role of Ray, while rising Belfast actor and singer-songwriter **Tabitha Smyth** will play Grace, Ray’s daughter. They will feature as part of a sterling ensemble cast of seven alongside **Ferdia Walsh-Peelo** (*Sing Street*), **Niall McNamee** (*Saipan*), **John McCarthy**, **Orlagh De Bhaldraithe** and **Damian Kearney**. Directed by **Julie Kelleher**, with **Liam Robinson** (*Hadestown*) as Music Supervisor and **Ciarán Bagnall** on Set and Lighting Design, the creative team has worked closely with Mick over the past three years, shaping the world he has envisioned through this new script and its twenty-one songs. Set on the western edge of Ireland in the 1970s, it follows two brothers living with the odds stacked against them. Each takes a different path in the hope of leading a “good” life, both trying to honour the woman who holds their hearts. In a town of backroom poker games, secrets and bribes, broken families and broken hearts, the people of this place must learn how to play the cards they’ve been dealt – and discover what it truly means when *the house must win.* Twenty years ago, Mick Flannery released his debut album *Evening Train*, originally written in response to a college assignment to “write a musical.” Mick did exactly that, though at the time he focused solely on the lyrics and music. Two decades later, following various iterations and workshop developments, he has now written the script for the first time, bringing to life the songs from that debut album alongside ten new compositions to create *The House Must Win*.
Cinema Breakfast - Rose of Nevada
Cinema Breakfast - Rose of Nevada
This Sunday we'll head to see Rose of Nevada in the Lighthouse, we'll meet from 11:15 in the Lighthouse cafe and head to the 12:15 screening. Make sure to book your tickets in advance! See you there. Ann. **Rose of Nevada** (114 min) **Director:**Mark Jenkin **Starring:**George MacKay, Francis Magee, Callum Turner, Mary Woodvine, Edward Rowe, Rosalind Eleazar **Synopsis** A Cornish modern classic. Eerie, heart-breaking, wonderful.’ — Mark Kermode When a fishing boat, the Rose of Nevada, lost with all hands 30 years ago, mysteriously reappears in the old harbour of a forgotten Cornish village, for those who remember, it’s surely a sign. The boat must go out to sea again and maybe then the luck of the devastated village will turn. Young father Nick (George MacKay) and enigmatic newcomer Liam (Callum Turner) join captain Murgey (Francis Magee), and they head to sea. But when they return, satisfied with their haul, something is amiss — they’ve slipped back in time, and the villagers greet them as if they are the original crew. Rose of Nevada is Cornish filmmaker Mark Jenkin’s hotly anticipated and critically acclaimed follow-up to his BAFTA-award-winning first feature Bait (2019) and Enys Men (2022). Unique among British feature filmmakers for the analogue way in which he crafts his films, Jenkin once again serves as writer, director, director of photography, editor, sound designer and score composer.
Sutton to Howth Walk
Sutton to Howth Walk
On Sunday 26th April, we'll be doing a walk from Sutton to Howth. **Meeting Location** Outside Sutton Station at 12:16. The suggested train to catch leaves Dublin Connolly at 11:57 that gets into Sutton at 12:16. It actually starts in Greystones at 10:58 and stops at all stations en route so feel free to get on at the most convenient station for you. **Route Description** This walk is from Sutton to Howth via a less well-trodden route and then in Howth we will visiting a few places that are off the beaten track. At one point we will be walking across a beach so your footwear may get a bit sandy. The total length of the walk is around 9km. The first part of the walk is fairly flat but the second part will involve climbing a small hill. If people are interested we could stop at a café or pub during or after walk. Or feel free to bring snacks as we could have a short break at some point. Or if people wish, we could go for Howth's famous fish and chips at the end of the walk. Feel free to come on the walk even if you haven't been to a meet up before. This is a great way to meet new people and see new places. **\*\*\* Important, please click on Attend if you wish to join this event. If you can no longer make it then please change your RSVP or send a message. Don't be a no-show - the organisers reserve the right to remove people from the group who have multiple no-shows. \*\*\*** \*\*\* If you wish to wander off during a break then it's probably OK but please agree with the organisers a time you'll return so we're not waiting for you \*\*\* **Host** Tim (085 718 5658) On the day of the event, if you need to contact the organiser then please send a WhatsApp message is the best way. Before the day you can send a message via Whatsapp or leave a message below. FAQs 1. Is there a charge for this event? No, this is a free event. Sometimes we have events that involve a visit to a museum or garden with an entrance fee - but this will be clearly marked in the details 2. Is it OK for people on a short visit to Ireland to join this walk? Yes both visitors and residents alike are welcome to join our walks. 3. How easy/difficult is this walk? Most walking groups would classify this as a fairly easy walk, but having a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. 4. Why are there only a limited number of places for this event? To ensure the best possible experience for the people attending it is necessary to limit the numbers, especially as the chosen route may not be straightforward and along narrow paths. 5. Why is it necessary to book on this event if you wish to attend? This is because there are only a limited number of spaces (see point above) and to ensure the fairest allocation of spaces, we kindly request everyone to book a place. It's OK to change your mind about coming but please change your RSVP as soon as you have for someone else to take the place if they wish to. PLEASE NOTE: Walking like many outdoor activities carries an element of risk. People who take part in our meet up activities do so at their own risk and are responsible for their own actions and involvement. If you register to join our meet up walks you agree that you wish to take part in the activities despite these risks. Please wear boots, shoes or runners that you find comfortable, provide suitable support and have good grip as some of the paths may be uneven or steep. It is also recommended to bring water to avoid dehydration. Bring warm clothes and a waterproof jacket or umbrella in case of inclement weather. How Lucky by Will Leitch
How Lucky by Will Leitch
Posting this early because seemingly all Sundays in May are holidays or busy! I picked a shorter thriller that's hopefully a fast read/listen. [Columbus library link to book](https://cml.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S105C3458940) Location: Grandview Cafe, *1455 W. 3rd Ave*, Columbus, OH 43212 [Menu](https://www.grandviewcafe.com/menu) Book summary: Daniel leads a rich life in the university town of Athens, Georgia. He's got a couple close friends, a steady paycheck working for a regional airline, and of course, for a few glorious days each Fall, college football tailgates. He considers himself to be a mostly lucky guy -- despite the fact that he's suffered from a debilitating disease since he was a small child, one that has left him unable to speak or to move without a wheelchair. Largely confined to his home, Daniel spends the hours he's not online communicating with irate air travelers observing his neighborhood from his front porch. One young woman passes by so frequently that spotting her out the window has almost become part of his daily routine. Until the day he's almost sure he sees her being kidnapped.

City Lights (1931)
City Lights (1931)
"The SOB is a ballet dancer. He’s the best ballet dancer that ever lived, and if I get a good chance I’ll kill him with my bare hands." - W.C. Fields In *City Lights*, Chaplin's Little Tramp meets a blind girl selling flowers who mistakes him for a wealthy man. When he learns that an operation may restore her sight, he sets off to earn the money she needs to have the surgery. He also befriends an alcoholic millionaire who only recognizes him when he is drunk. When the blind girl and her grandmother fall behind in the rent and face eviction, he tries working and even enters a boxing competition to raise the money they need. Regarded as Chaplin's masterpiece, *City Lights* has been ranked on more than seventeen "100 greatest movies of all time" lists. Orson Welles cited it as his favorite picture. *City Lights* is available for streaming on Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBOMax, Tubi and PlutoTV. The Columbus Library lists three copies on blu-ray and eight copies on DVD. Watch the movie on your own, then join us upstairs at East Market to discuss the film. If you want more, *Unknown Chaplin* is a three-episode lost-footage documentary available on Youtube. It covers his time on *City Lights* beginning at the twenty-six minute mark of episode two: https://youtu.be/f8960Uc15hI?t=1558
