In this talk, we open that black box. We build a mental model of the B-Tree, the structure used by most databases for their default indexes, and look at its internal layout. Using that model, we’ll explore where B-Tree indexes shine, where they fail, the costs associated with them, and how selectivity affects whether an index is used. **The Mezze Table – A Cultural Dinner with Meaningful Conversations** **Some of the best conversations in life happen around a table.** **The Mezze Table is a small cultural dinner where Arabic, German, and English speakers come together to share Lebanese food and real conversations.** **The evening is gently guided with a few thoughtful conversation prompts that help people connect more naturally.** **Only 20 seats are available.** **At the center of the table we share traditional Lebanese mezze such as Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, and Tabbouleh.** **The word mezze itself comes from the Mediterranean and refers to a collection of small dishes served together. But the idea behind the Mezze Table goes a bit further.** **Just like a mezze table brings together different flavors, this evening brings together a mix of cultures, languages, experiences, and ideas.** **Meals in the Middle East are rarely eaten alone. After getting off the train just outside Bratislava, we'll jump on a quick bus to the Danube/Morava confluence, where Devín castle looms tall and proud at on a strategic rock. Acknowledging its mighty presence from the in- and outside, we'll go look for the nearby Freedom Gate memorial and stroll through quaint and picturesque Devín village. A local bus then whisks us downstream into present-age downtown where we sneak up Bratislava Castle on a hidden pathway to enjoy an unparalleled panorama over the capital. So this month's prompt is more general. I think we can all agree that we are living in "unique" times that require coping skills. I think that one role and/or purpose of philosophy is to help us deal with our daily lives and our "unique" times. So, let's share our feelings and thoughts about which philosopher/philosophy we turn to in order to deal with our crazy events. Who/what helps you stay focused in your daily life and helps you sleep at night. I find that Stoicism with a little philosophical pessimism mixed in goes a long way in helping me deal with what I see as very destructive, fearful and mean spirited public policies at both the state and federal levels. This is in the main mall where the Microsoft store used to be, on your left if you're standing at the bottom of the AMC Theater escalator. Join us on Sunday for an hour of uninterrupted wordmaking! • What we'll do Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at noon on Sundays. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: 12:00 - quick intros. 12:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 1:10 - chat / take off / keep writing. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 1-1:30ish. Writing is very solitary.
