The Fiction Workshop
Welcome to the Shanghai Writing Workshop. We are interested in everything related to creative writing, and we hope you can join us.
If you're interested in joining, you'll need to join our wechat chat group to let us know if you're lost on your way to the meeting. You can wechat me at texaswriter, and I can get you added. I also encourage you to scan the QR code above to join our official wechat channel. There you can get detailed directions on how to find us, how to sign up for our website (www.shanghaiwriting.com), and details on how we function.
There's a new short prompt available on the website that's updated for each meeting. Try and post a response a few days before meeting if you want others a chance to comment on it.
You also don't have to submit. Readers are always welcome, but I do find that reading before meeting greasy increases the joy of going to meeting.
No experience required. We are a mixed group in terms of experience, backgrounds, and languages, but I find that we are also very supportive of each other in everything from goals to reading to publishing.
In addition to the standard workshop, the Shanghai Writing Workshop hosts two writing retreats a year, puts forward a team for the three day novel writing competition, hosts a reading series called Shanghai Voices, and puts together an ebook anthology of work at the end of every year. We're always doing something, and if you have any ideas, we're always up for anything literature related.
Once again, if you need help getting setup, contact me on wechat, texaswriter, and I hope to see you at the workshop.

Sunday Scribbles (Free-writing Time)
Get ready creative writers! Inkwell is proud to announce Sunday Scribbles, our latest event for the Shanghai writing community.
Sunday Scribbles is a low stress gathering for your Sunday afternoon creative writing. Join us to work, chat, and write to your heart's content. (Mostly write, though). Add Ryan (WechatID: texaswriter) to figure out where we are meeting this week and to ask any questions. I don't keep Meetup very up to date and everything Inkwell does is organized through wechat groups, so even if the number of attendees is low, there's likely an event still going on. Add Ryan, and you can join the wechat group where everything is happening.
Some Frequently Asked Questions:
What do we do here?: Mostly write and work quietly with some chatting
What to bring?: Something to work on
What we don't do?: Edit things for you, serve as writing consultants
What does it cost?: Free, but please order something to support the venue.
What is Inkwell?: There's a lot of information about the workshop located on the website: www.inkwell.asia.
Meet Writing Workshop veterans and other Workshoppers for the latest info on writing prompts and activities. It's also the perfect chance to make the Sunday night deadline for that week's Writing Workshop.
Sunday Scribbles is organized by Paula Willis who has been in Shanghai since early 2018 and a member of the writing group since fall 2019.

Former French Concession Historic Walking Tour on 27th June 2026
After the first Opium War, Shanghai was opened up to the world. British came to Shanghai first and set up the British settlement. American and French came afterwards to set up American settlement and French Concession. After the Small Sword society uprising, Shanghai was divided to three zones which were managed by different rules.
France expanded the concession through constructing“extra-settlement roads” outside the concession. The commercial activities were flourished in International Settlement while on the other hand, French Concession developed to an ideal residential area for the upper class. There were quite a lot of villas and apartments in the area. The French Concession came to an end in 1943 when the Vichy French government signed it over to the puppet government in Nanking.
Russian community flourished gradually and there were over 20,000 Russians lived this area which is also used to be called “little St. Petersburg” in 1930s. The white Russians opened shops, stores, restaurants, cafes and also some taught music and dancing which contributed a lot to the growth and development of French Concession. Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Symphony Museum are all located in the area.
In this 2K-long walking tour our guide will take you to visit Empire Mansion, Shanghai Symphony Museum, Three apartments (Clements, Blackstone, Elizabeth), Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling (wife of Dr. Sun Yat-sen), the villas for “Four Big Families” of Republic of China (Chiang Family, Soong Family, Kung Family and Chen Family), Pushkin Sculpture, Bai’s Mansion, Shanghai’s "White House" (Shanghai Art and Craft Museum).

Discover Chinese Tea Culture – Join Me for a Tea Farm Tour
👉 **To join:** Please add Daisy on WeChat at **daisy00233**
**We conduct all discussions over WeChat only.**
Hello, my name is Daisy Wen. I studied English Literature as an undergraduate and later completed an LLB with the University of London.
Beyond academics, I have a long-standing fascination with Chinese tea culture. In China, tea is far more than a beverage. It is deeply woven into history, daily life, etiquette, art, and philosophy. Even the Japanese tea ceremony traces its roots back to tea traditions of the Tang Dynasty.
I am beginning to organize small, relaxed visits to tea farms for those who are genuinely curious about tea — how it is grown, harvested, processed, and appreciated.
If you enjoy meaningful cultural experiences and good conversation over a proper cup of tea, I am forming a WeChat group for like-minded friends.
Let us meet for a cuppa and see where the journey takes us.

Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Greetings writers! Come down and join your fellow wordsmiths for one hour of uninterrupted writing time in the upper level of the Market District Supermarket in Upper Arlington.
The main entrance of the shopping center opens onto stairs/elevator leading up to the 2nd floor cafe section where we will have a table displaying a sign with the Shut Up & Write logo.
Writing is largely a solitary craft. Practicing with others in a community setting may be the thing you need to fire your own routine.
We’ll meet on Wednesday evenings, starting the clock at 6:30, following a brief period of introductions. This is solid writing time and all inclusive. Any project is acceptable, be it fiction, non -fiction, work or homework assignment. All is welcome and will remain private to you.

Show up as early as you like, or stay late. This group tends to socialize some, both before and after the alloted time, but this is not mandatory to you. Feel free to come and go as you please and late arrivals are welcome.
The cafe may be noisy on occasion so headphones/ earbuds are reccommended as you see fit.
Please try to RSVP if possible so that we may grab enough seats for all—the venue can be busy at times.
Feel free to message me privately wth any questions and/ or concerns you may have.
Happy writing!

June Book Club Meetup
Welcome, readers!
Our June read is ***Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible*** ***Voyage***
**by Alfred Lansing.**
A work of nonfiction, and one of the most astonishing survival stories in history, we follow Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew after their ship is crushed by Antarctic ice. Stranded in one of the harshest environments on Earth, the men endure months of isolation, freezing temperatures, and near starvation—yet refuse to give up hope. Lansing brings their ordeal to life through vivid detail and firsthand accounts, capturing both the brutality of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. At its core, the story is a powerful testament to leadership, perseverance, and the unbreakable will to survive against impossible odds.
Looking forward to discussing with everyone!
We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **all** **drinks must be purchased at the bar.**
Happy reading! 📖
