LIVESTREAM | The Founder’s Playbook: A Live Strategy Session With Joel McDonald
Click here to attend: [https://www.jgoot.com/livestreams](https://www.jgoot.com/livestreams)
There’s a big difference between knowing travel tricks… and thinking strategically.
A lot of travelers spend their time chasing:
• the next card
• the next bonus
• the next redemption
• the next “hack”
But the travelers who consistently get the best results?
They think differently.
They make better decisions.
They understand leverage.
They know what actually matters… and what doesn’t.
And often, the biggest breakthroughs don’t come from learning something new.
They come from finally understanding the game itself.
That’s what makes sessions with JGOOT Founder Joel McDonald different.
Because this isn’t just about points.
It’s not just about cards.
It’s not just about travel.
It’s about the mindset, strategy, and decision-making process behind building a life where extraordinary travel becomes normal.
In this special live strategy session, Joel will be diving into the ideas, perspectives, and playbook principles that continue to shape the way smart travelers approach points, travel, and opportunity.
It’s time for: **The Founder’s Playbook: A Live Strategy Session with Joel McDonald**
Inside this session, Joel will cover:
• The strategic shifts changing the way smart travelers approach points and travel
• Common mistakes that quietly cost people opportunities, flexibility, and value
• How experienced travelers think differently from beginners
• The difference between collecting points… and building a real travel strategy
• Why simplicity often outperforms complexity in the long run
• The mindset and habits that lead to more consistent travel success
This isn’t about chasing hype.
It isn’t about finding one magic trick.
It’s about learning how to think strategically in a world full of noise, distractions, and endless “travel hacks.”
And when you understand the playbook behind the playbook… you stop reacting to opportunities randomly… and start creating them intentionally.

Memorial Day Weekend National Mall Monuments & Memorials (Rating: D)
*You must read the following NVHC Sign-in Sheet Statement/Liability Disclaimer, [https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf](https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf) and then answer the question that you will see when you RSVP with "I accept" to be permitted on the hike.*
6.8 miles with 127 feet elevation gain. **Let's celebrate Memorial Day weekend by hiking to see some of the wonderful monuments and memorials on and around the National Mall.**
The National Mall in DC is full of many beautiful monuments and memorials. One could spend many days exploring them all. On this trek, we will focus on the National Mall and Tidal Basin area
The pace will be about 2.0-2.5 mph to allow time to enjoy the sights, take photos, and reflect on our national history as we honor the fallen.
We are meeting at the Smithsonian Castle Haupt Garden. I'll be in the back (south side) of the Castle at the Haupt Garden sitting on a bench enjoying the view, so find me thereabouts. This area faces Independence Ave.
Our trek will take us to a number of locations including NMAI Native American Veterans Memorial, Eisenhower Memorial, Ulysses Grant Memorial, Peace Memorial, National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, Washington Monument, WWII Memorial, Constitution Gardens, Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Franklin Roosevelt Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial.
**Best way to get to the Smithsonian Castle:**
***Metro: Best option -The Smithsonian Castle is very close to the Smithsonian Metro Station*** (see [https://goo.gl/maps/aT5Y6Wwte7P2](https://goo.gl/maps/aT5Y6Wwte7P2)), ***be sure to exit to the National Mall side.***
Alternatively you can go to the L'Enfant Metro.
Another option is the National Archives metro which is a fairly short walk to the Castle.
If you would really rather drive, there is metered street parking available both on Jefferson Dr. (on the front side of the castle) or the Haupt Garden side at 1050 Independence Ave SW, Washington, DC 20560. Please note that parking can be difficult to find on a nice weekend holiday.
There are several public restrooms along our route.
Bring some hydration and snacks as you desire. The route is basically level. Most of the hike will be on paved surfaces so wear comfortable walking shoes.
Dogs are permitted on this hike in accordance with the NVHC Dog Policy. [https://tinyurl.com/nvhcdogpolicy](https://tinyurl.com/nvhcdogpolicy) NOTE: There may be some restrictions regarding dog access such as inside the Lincoln & Jefferson Memorials, so please check in advance of bringing your dog. They are certainly welcome outside.
Meet at the Castle 15 minutes early to allow everyone to be signed in and get ready to hike at 10:00am.
We will plan on an optional rehydration after the hike for those interested.
Any questions, please message me here or text/call @202-528-0456. If you text me, please include your name.

Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at **7:00 PM on Wednesday evenings.**
Edit: As of January 7, 2026, we will be back at Starbucks!
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
**We'll meet inside the coffee shop**. Please buy something to ensure we're welcome back. Sit down anywhere, but let me know you're here so we can introduce ourselves and check in before and after writing! (I'll be the one with the sign.)
**SCHEDULE:**
7:00 - Quick introductions
7:20 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
8:20 - The End: chat, take off, or keep writing
Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you!
**What Should I Bring?**
Whatever you need to be able to write! Note that outlets are limited, so please make sure your devices are charged.
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the overhead music or the conversation by other patrons.
**Other Important Details:**
Starbucks has WiFi.
TRAVEL / PARKING: The shopping area is about a twenty minute walk from the College Park or P. G. Plaza/Hyattsville Crossing Metro Stations. There's also a bus stop right outside the shopping center on Baltimore Ave. Parking is free.
SEATING INFORMATION: Seating is first come first serve. I'll try to grab a table, but be prepared to sit down anywhere.
FOOD GUIDELINES: Tea, coffee, and light food are available at the coffee shop. Please thank our hosts by purchasing something to drink.

Grab a coffee and join the group! We generally have 10 to 14 writers attend each week, and new folks are welcome to drop in anytime.

Manhattan Tip to Tip Walk (Union Station, 20 mi)
Let’s take DC UW on the road, and do a New York City walk! For this walk we will walk the entire length of Manhattan from Inwood in the north all the way to the Statue of Liberty lookout in the south. We will take a very meandering route through many of the parks and green spaces of Manhattan and hit up some of the top sights/attractions.
Disclaimer:
This is an all day affair. Expect to be up at or before 4am and not to be home until after midnight. While in NYC we will be walking 20+ miles. That means 8+ hours on our feet walking briskly. I also expect everyone to be self sufficient in navigation in case we are separated (I will be giving out physical maps of the route when we get to NYC).
Logistics:
We will be taking the train to New York. We will meet in the main hall of Union Station bright and early for the 5:20 AM Northeast Regional 160. Make sure to arrive 15-30 minutes early, also note that the metro does not run this early so you will need your own transportation (uber, walk/bike if you live close, etc.) We will get to NYC Penn Station at roughly 8:45 AM. Once we regroup we will take the subway to Inwood and start our walk. At the end of the day we will take the subway back to Penn Station and the 8:01 PM Northeast Regional 165 back to Union Station, getting back at 11:30 PM. Metro runs until 2 am on Saturday’s so we’ll be able to metro home.
Departure Train: Northeast Regional 160 at 5:20 am. WAS -> NYP
Return Train: Northeast Regional 165 at 8:01 pm. NYP -> WAS
Preparations:
Please bring everything you may need to for an all day excursion. That includes a backpack with water, snacks, potential rain gear depending on weather, and potentially a packaged lunch (I haven’t fully decided on the food situation, but I’m hoping we can have a picnic lunch as a group in central park).
Start Location: Union Station (main hall)
End Location: Union Station
Mileage: \~20

Fountains of DC Walk (U Street -> Union Station, 5 mi)
Now that the Meridian Hill Park fountain is running again and with the warmer weather this is the perfect time to explore some of DCs most beautiful water fountains!
**Time:** 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
**Start Location:** U Street Metro Station (13th street entrance)
**End Location:** Union Station
**Map:** [Komoot](https://www.komoot.com/tour/2971499159?share_token=a8HXEsygXdjmA3VUk0jaZgx2TOiQM9fwmCZos69kds6Kj3u4Bz&ref=wtd&t_s=referral&t_cid=route_share&t_ref_username=5303637054528)
**Millage:** 5 miles
**Terrain:** There will mostly be paved and level ground.

We try to be punctual with our event times so please be respectful to others and show up a few minutes early. Note, we often limit the RSVPs to keep group sizes manageable. If you are on the waitlist but would really like to join, reach out to the organizer.
Our events prioritize metro accessibility by meeting and ending at metro stations. Sometimes we start/stop at the same station, sometimes we do not. Please double check the event description to see if you can manage transportation.
If you've enjoyed our walks please consider donating a few bucks to help us keep this group running (meetup is expensive!). [Donation Link](https://venmo.com/code?user_id=2158403661070336114)
