Dass an warmen Sommertagen auf der mehr als 21 Kilometer langen und bis zu 250 Meter breiten Insel einmal mehr als 200.000 Personen täglich unterwegs sein würden, war beim politischen Startschuss für das Projekt im Jahr 1969 allerdings weder geplant noch vorhersehbar. Ursprünglich als rein technisches Hochwasserschutzprojekt konzipiert und politisch höchst umstritten, entwickelte sich die Donauinsel erst im Lauf von mehr als 30 Jahren Planungs- und Bauzeit zu einem vielfältigen Natur- und Erholungsraum am Wasser. Die Ausstellung im Wien Museum beleuchtet die Geschichte und Gegenwart dieser besonderen Landschaft, die heute zu den wichtigsten Freiräumen in der Stadt zählt und Stadtbewohner:innen unterschiedlichsten Alters und diversester Herkunft für eine Vielzahl von Aktivitäten dient.
