Profs & Pints DC: How AI Alters Thinking
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“How AI Alters Thinking,”** on dealing with artificial intelligence’s capacity to change and undermine our thought processes, with Eli Alshanetsky, assistant professor of philosophy at Temple University, principal investigator at its Cognitive Integrity Lab, and author of an upcoming book on AI and freedom of thought.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-how-ai-alters-thinking](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-how-ai-alters-thinking) .]
Doctors who give bad advice can be sued for malpractice. Teachers belong to a profession with set standards. When artificial intelligence guides you, however, that guidance comes with a disclaimer: Use at your own risk.
Every day millions of people take that risk, and usually AI seems genuinely helpful. But even if AI gives us good answers, might its use over time do bad things to how we think?
Explore the relationship between AI and our own minds with Eli Alshanetsky, whose Cognitive Integrity Lab studies how artificial intelligence changes how we think, learn, and build trust. Author of *Articulating a Thought* and the upcoming book *Freedom of Thought in the Age of AI*, he’s on the cutting edge of efforts to answer AI-related questions such as: How can we tell when work is truly our own? How can technology support rather than replace authorship and reflection? What does trust mean when AI mediates our relationships with others and with our own thoughts?
To set up his discussion of potential consequences of AI, he’ll describe how social media’s impact on society serves as a preview.
Social media didn’t just give people what they wanted to click on, it actually changed what they regarded as click-worthy. It broke attention spans and fueled radicalization across millions of very different people. It left us with people who doom-scroll for hours, who can’t focus, who don’t know what to trust anymore.
If you’d shown people this version of themselves ten years ago, would they have chosen it?
Artificial intelligence is making a similar deal with us, but the stakes are higher. It isn’t chasing clicks. It’s optimized for giving you the most satisfying response to whatever is on your mind right now.
The risk over time isn’t just that you’ll get lazy. More profoundly, even when you think hard, your sense of what counts as good thinking—as well as what sounds like you—will shift to match what AI has been feeding you.
We’ll consider what kind of person this produces and whether this is someone we want to be or want children to become. Professor Alshanetsky will lay out a practical framework, which he calls “the interaction layer,” for using AI without letting it replace the thinking it’s supposed to support. He’ll also talk about what AI-related concerns should be the focus of parents and educators. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

LIVESTREAM | The Fuel Factor: Fixing Redemption Mistakes
Click here to attend: [https://www.jgoot.com/livestreams](https://www.jgoot.com/livestreams)
Some people finally find an award flight and think they’ve won.
You search and search.
You finally find availability.
You get excited.
Finally.
Until the total pops up.
The mistake is thinking a great redemption is just about the points.
It’s not.
Because one of the fastest ways to ruin a great redemption… is fuel surcharges.
That “amazing deal” you just found?
It might come with a few hundred dollars in added fees… sometimes more.
And it shows up right there in the booking process, taking the shine off what looked like a win.
In this special session, JGOOT Redemption Multiplier experts Stephanie and Tom are breaking down how to find redemptions that actually deliver value… without getting dragged down by unnecessary cash costs.
Because the truth is: many travelers focus only on the points required… while smarter travelers focus on the total cost of the redemption.
It’s time for: **The Fuel Factor: Where Great Redemptions Go Wrong (and How to Fix It)**
Stephanie and Tom will show how fuel surcharges really work, where they show up, and how to consistently avoid them so your points go further.
Inside this session, you’ll learn:
• What fuel surcharges are and why they exist
• How to spot high-surcharge redemptions before you get to checkout
• Which airlines and programs tend to add (or avoid) these fees
• How to find alternative routes that cost the same points… but far less cash
• Simple ways to protect your redemptions from getting quietly overpriced
This isn’t about finding more flights.
It’s not about using more points.
It’s about making sure the redemptions you already find… are actually worth it.
And once you understand the fuel factor, you’ll stop getting surprised at checkout… and start booking with confidence.

You must read the following NVHC Sign-in Sheet Statement/Liability Disclaimer, [https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf](https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf) and then answer the question that you will see when you RSVP with "I accept" to be permitted on the hike.
This is a \~ 8.4 mile hike with \~100 feet of elevation gain in Algonkian Regional Park. We'll start on the Potomac Heritage Trail (PHT) and hike upstream through the Horsepen Run Preserve making a return loop. We'll then head downstream on the PHT to the Algonkian Nature Sanctuary where we'll make a loop and then return to the start point. The Algonkian Regional Park Sanctuary consists of 30+ acres of wetlands on Lowe's Island adjacent to the Potomac River. The wetlands are a unique part of the Potomac that supports a variety of flora and fauna including Bald Eagles.
There will be some hiking along the Potomac River, the golf course and recreation areas. We will start on the PHT near the parking lot at Volcano Island Waterpark in Algonkian Regional Park (GPS coordinates: 39.061784, -77.386796). Some of the hike is on trails, pavement and gravel road. We hike at a pace of 2.5 to 3.0 mph while moving.

Chimney Top-Cabins, WV (Rating: B)
You must read the following NVHC Sign-in Sheet Statement/Liability Disclaimer, [https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf ](https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf)and then answer the question that you will see when you RSVP with "I accept" to be permitted on the hike.
This is a 6-to-7 mile out-and-back hike with nearly 1600 ft. of elevation. While rated as a B hike, most all of the elevation occurs in the steep climb in the first 1.3 miles! So take that into consideration. Hopefully, the Mountain Laurel will still be in bloom! While the length of this hike is not long, and the drive may not seem worth it, the time spent on the hike will include many stops for the scenic views and photo taking opportunities. Since the parking is limited, the number of attendees will be limited, and carpooling is strongly encouraged.
From the Landis Trail trailhead parking lot, we will take the Landis Trail to the peak, then turn right on the ridge onto the North Fork Mountain Trail and follow that to Chimney Top. We will take our time stopping to take in the stunning views at the several overlooks and Chimney Top before returning the same route back. Chimney Top has wide panoramic views similar to Big Schloss, with a view of the Dolly Sods plateau across the valley. Click on the links below for photos of the views.
We hike at a 2.5-3.0 mph pace when moving.
While this hike technically doesn't quite rate as a B level for distance and elevation, I'm rating it as a B due the steep climb of near 1500 feet in the first 1.3 miles.
Alltrails map for hike: [https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/west-virginia/chimney-top-via-landis-and-north-fork-mountain-trails](https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/west-virginia/chimney-top-via-landis-and-north-fork-mountain-trails)
It can be buggy and overgrown in places on this hike, so bug spray and long pants are recommended.
The travel time from Centreville Park and Ride is about 2 hrs. and 15 minutes and about 122 miles. The leader will not be at the carpool location. Those wishing to carpool can use the comment section to arrange carpools with others. Neither the Club nor the hike leaders are responsible for coordinating transportation to/from the trailhead. Hikers are not guaranteed to get a ride to the trailhead from the carpool location. Carpooling is organized by the participants and they participate at their own risk.
Meet at the carpool location no later than 8:00and leave by 8:10.
