Okay Cupid, I Axed you for the last time!
Okay Cupid, I Axed you for the last time!
**Yes friends, it’s f\*\*\*\*\*g 'axe down' time.** Just maybe: * Cupid passed right by this year, leaving you wondering “What the hell?!?” * (Worse,) Cupid hit the wrong target. * or Possibly in its mysterious way, the Universe just does not seem to be getting your “yeah, send it already” messages. **So let’s circle up and** **send out some cold hard steel through our wee bit of the galaxy!** Our true motivation: having fun making new friends and seeing friendly faces. **[Axe Escape Austin](https://axeescapeaustin.com/)** offers you a tomahawk axe, ninja star, throwing card, and batarang to toss in 10 different projected games. Game selection and scoring can be individually controlled from each lane. Let's go! High score, low score or the middle of the pack, we’ll celebrate ‘em all after at **[Easy Tiger](https://www.easytigeraustin.com/location/north)**, a strong recommendation for your “All-day bakeshop and beer garden” shortlist. **\*\*Do NOTE: Reservations at Axe Escape are “highly suggested,” so give a careful read of the details / game plan below.\*\*** **Event Details** **Cost: $25** **per person** per hour (1 hour total $27.06) **Venue**: Axe Escape Austin, after to Easy Tiger **Area**: Highland / Central Austin **Address:** The Linc, 6406 N Interstate 35 Frontage Rd, **Suite 2760**, Austin, 78752 **Ticketing**: -**Option A**: Take on the role of assistant Assistant Organizer (so to speak) and [prepay a reservation for up to six people](https://sportscarnival.com/clubs/axe_escape_and_zero_latency_north_austin/schedules/745), the lane maximum. -**Option B**: Go “stand by” and join our last minute lane assignments as available. -Take care of [signing the liability waiver ahead of time](https://sportscarnival.com/clubs/axe_escape_and_zero_latency_north_austin/forms/sign_waiver) or scan the QR code at the Axe Escape front counter and deal with that legalese there. **Parking:** -lots of parking spaces despite being adjacent to a chicken wing bar -being at the end of The Linc opposite from [Easy Tiger](https://www.easytigeraustin.com/location/north), consider splitting the walking distance if you plan on hanging at both. **Age restrictions:** tweens and above are A-ok! **Here are our F\*\*\*\*\*ing Friends connection ideas:** * To help clarify the “Ticketing” above, here on Meetup we’re starting with an immediate waitlist. This event’s day and time have been chosen to give us a great chance to play on a walk-in basis (**Option B**). It is likely the best choice for most of us since it **avoids a \*\*bar tab- / credit-only\*\* type of refund that prepayment locks in.** * **So when will you be taken off the waitlist?** You won’t! I’ll be checking in with the front desk periodically to make sure there are at least a few lanes to play on. If by surprise they book almost all of their lanes, we’ll reschedule for a later date or pull you from the waitlist (in first-signed-up order) to fill any available slots on reservations that a f\*\*\*\*\*g friend might still have. * **Please give yourself enough time to park and get checked in so that our actual throwing start times are close together.** Once a group gets to slinging, trying to add a player mid-round would glitch the scoring. * **Could I just watch?** For a few very sensible reasons, [the venue’s FAQ makes clear they’re not set-up for spectating](https://axeescapeaustin.com/axe-throwing-faq/). After my scouting visit I really agree, which is part of why **we’re heading to Easy Tiger after. Feel free to join us there!**

Fun & easy way to play more tennis (read event description)
We’re still working to get more people into these Meetups, but our goal is to give PlayYourCourt members a few social tennis outings each week in addition to your practice sessions and Challenge League matches. These Meetups are co-ed, super laid back, and all skill levels are welcome. Post your skill level and a suggested court in the comments section so we can round up as many players as we can for some tennis fun! Also, if you’re looking to meet new practice partners or play some matches and you aren’t already in the PlayYourCourt Community, you can go here to see what we’re all about and sign up: https://www.playyourcourt.com/tennis-community/round-rock-tx/meetup/ If you love tennis, we’d love to have you! Be sure and watch the quick video that explains how everything works. Happy hitting! - Scott

FEBRUARY -- Zone One 🧟🏙️🚧 (Celebrating Black History Month)
FEBRUARY -- Zone One 🧟🏙️🚧 (Celebrating Black History Month)
***Zone One* by Colson Whitehead** (2011) Mark Spitz, a civilian sweeper assigned to reclaim Manhattan after a catastrophic pandemic, spends his days moving block by block through the remaining infected zones, clearing out the last remnants of the outbreak so society can attempt to begin again. As he navigates abandoned streets, stalled skyscrapers, and the echoes of his former life, the work becomes both routine and reckoning. Over the course of several days, memories surface and the fragile boundary between what was lost and what remains begins to blur, revealing how difficult it is to rebuild a world that refuses to stay buried. **Colson Whitehead** is an acclaimed American author known for blending literary craft with sharp social insight across genres. His work often reimagines history and speculative scenarios to explore race, memory, power, and American identity, earning him multiple major awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. He’s widely admired for taking familiar forms and quietly bending them into something stranger, smarter, and more unsettling. **Themes to Keep in Mind While Reading (Non-Spoiler)** 1. **Memory as Survival** How do memories shape the way characters experience the present, and when do they help survival versus quietly undermine it? 2. **Routine After Catastrophe** What does the return of routines and procedures suggest about how people adapt to life after the world has fundamentally changed? 3. **Rebuilding vs. Repeating** Does the effort to rebuild point toward meaningful change, or does it risk recreating the same structures and assumptions that existed before? **Before the event …** * **Read the book. 🤩** * **Keep your RSVP up-to-date.** If you can't make it out, update your RSVP at least 24 hours beforehand. Attendance will be taken and "No Show"s marked. **At the event …** * **We’re a friendly welcoming bunch and we love new folks!** 😍 * **Please purchase something (even if just a soda) while you’re at the restaurant.** They’re running a business but being super awesome by giving us a space to meet for free. Also, please tip our servers. We’re a big bunch to wrangle. ***2026 Austin Horror Book Club Selections*** *[Click here to see this year's books!](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iGygwFn0yfyAgDl8-HpNjNcdhhNJn6H0AnmpFBVwywo/edit?usp=sharing)*
Discovery Wells/Twin Creeks Hike
Discovery Wells/Twin Creeks Hike
Let's do a pair of moderate hikes in the Hill Country of NW Travis County. There is some rocky terrain and steep sections but mostly moderate. First we can hike a couple of miles at Discovery Wells Cave Preserve, then we can go down the road for a couple of scenic miles along the creek at Twin Creeks. Bring water and hiking boots. Hats are recommended. Afterwards, we can get a bite to eat at a nearby Mediterranean cafe. The Sierra Club is not allowed to organize carpools but we highly recommend doing so. Many folks will rendez-vous at the Y in Oak Hill, Central Market on North Lamar, and REI Gateway. If you wish to drive or ride in a carpool, please leave a comment on the meetup page. Participants must sign a Liability Waiver upon arrival. You may view the waiver document: [https://tinyurl.com/SCSignUpSheet2020](https://tinyurl.com/SCSignUpSheet2020)

The Fisherman by John Langan
The Fisherman by John Langan
Join us for The Fisherman by John Langan. In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story. Soon, though, the men find themselves drawn into a tale as deep and old as the Reservoir. It's a tale of dark pacts, of long-buried secrets, and of a mysterious figure known as Der Fisher: the Fisherman. It will bring Abe and Dan face to face with all that they have lost, and with the price they must pay to regain it.

A Changed Mind, Columbus, Ohio
A Changed Mind, Columbus, Ohio
Always an overachiever, David Bayer didn't settle for being Number Two in just about anything. Whether a runaway entrepreneurial success as a teenager, the leading online director for Ducati with over $70 million in sales, or as an early mid-life crisis overachiever with at least three wildly self-destructive behavioral addictions, whatever David did, he did it wholeheartedly. Not surprisingly then, when it came to facing his failures and determining his next course of action, David sought health and healing with the same full-strength effort he had previously used to bring about his own ruination. Seeking to learn from the best of the best, David's pursuit of tangible, practical, actual change from the mind and emotions, outward, brought a new passion--that of encouraging others to learn from his mistakes and to be able to strive after and achieve healing and success in their own lives. We are reading *A Changed Mind*, by David Bayer, and can't wait to enjoy the group discussion on **Wednesday, March 4, 2026, 6:30 pm**, at **True Food Kitchen, Easton Town Center**. Come join us!
