Discuss & Social đˇ Connection in a world that values independence
Can relationships or friendships grow forever in a world that values independence and self-realization? Are commitment and strong attachment at odds with such values? Or can they coexist?
*Join us for a relaxed group conversation where we explore the real life, the grey areas, and how our different cultures and backgrounds shape our views about key topics.* *Expect real talk, no judgment, and a chance to hear how others see it.*
**\*Come for the discussion, stay for the friendships. Our weekly discussion series brings together thoughtful people for honest conversations on relationships, life, and societyâwith warm social vibes before and after.\***
**WHAT TO EXPECT:**
* Good vibes only: we chat big topics in a chill, respectful way. No arguing - just open-minded exchange.
* We warm up with casual socializing (come solo or with friends!)
* The topic starts around 7:45/8pm, wraps around 9:30.
* đ There's pizza, drinks, milkshakes and snacks available at the bar (incl plant-based options)
* And most people stay until late for drinks and mingling!
**DISCUSSION FORMAT:**
**Our group conversations are open and flexible - there is a very soft guided flow to ensure we focus on the main questions, and to ensure that everyone gets a balanced opportunity to speak. Here's a typically structure, but we adjust on the day depending on the turnout:**
\- Introductions and thoughts *(\~5 mins).*
\- Group breakouts per question *(\~20 mins x 3).*
\- Final round of opinions *(\~10 mins)*.
\- Mix and mingle\, make new friends\, get drinks etc *(\~until late)*
**EVENT ETIQUETTE (Rules & expectations)**
\- Debate the topic\, not the participants \- no personal attacks\!
\- No phones\, no interrupting\, no bystanding
\- Always follow the moderator/host instructions and guidelines
**WHAT IS WORLD CITIZENS?**
We're one of London's longest-running and largest communities. Since 2012 we run socials, cultural activities and stimulating discussions to foster meaningful exchange and learning among London's global professionals. They are inspired by MUN (Model United Nations) and salon discussions and offer a more relaxed and social evening version.
**LOCATION DETAILS**
What: Discussion session followed by social/networking
When: Tuesday, 7:30pm until late.
Where: Curzon Aldgate (bar area), 2 Canter Way, E1 8PS
Closest stations: Aldgate East, Aldgate, Tower Hill/Gateway
Cost: Pay for your own meals or drinks
Hosts: We have a rotating team and the actual host of each event varies. Our regular members can also help you out with basic matters.
*NOTE: like most guests, our volunteer hosts also attend after work and may happen to arrive after the start time. If you are punctual or earlier than our hosts, we highly appreciate this! Please feel free to start socializing already and/or get something to eat or drink - thatâs the point of our events anyway. Our regular members can also help you out with any basic matters.*
**\*Our other weekly events\***
\- Friday evening socials every week
\- Saturday afternoon cafe in Chelsea
\- Canary Wharf socials every other Wednesday
\- Outdoor fun \(hiking\, kayaking\, etc\) every weekend

2 Free Exhibitions focusing on New York and the American West followed by tea.
First, we will visit the American West, an exhibition featuring the work of Richard Avedon. These images, which picture the heart and soul of hardscrabble, working-class America, represented a significant new development in his work.
Avedon spent five years, from 1979 to 1984, travelling to twenty-one US states. He conducted more than a thousand sittings, finally producing 126 editioned images, 21 of which are on view at this exhibition.
From this exhibition, we shall take a short walk to the next gallery for another exhibition with an American theme.
New York - all seasons & Summer Still Lifes : Garner took his first US pictures in October 1973 in Richmond, Virginia. In 1976, he made his first pictures in Miami, then in 1977 in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
This exhibition is a selection of colour images made between 2000 and 2018 in New York. At the same time, we will view a small collection of his Summer Still Life collection, taken in the south of France in the summers of 1983 and 1984.
Please note that these free exhibitions at commercial galleries are not large but are always very well curated and presented. We should expect to spend around 30 to 40 minutes at each. If we finish early, there are numerous galleries in the area, and we can pick another one or two to visit depending on timings. I already have a note of what's on.
After this exhibitions, the meetup ends, but it would be great if most if not all of us, stay for an entirely optional tea, drink, or snack in one of the many establishments in the area. This will offer a great opportunity to relax and chat socially after what should be an interesting afternoon. Depending on numbers, this can possibly be Sotheby's, which is not expensive for tea and cake or another establishment.
The exhibitions are free, but the usual ÂŁ1.50 group maintenance fee applies and is non refundable. Please note that Meetup now adds about ÂŁ0.60 to this as well. (If you pay cash on the day, itâs ÂŁ2.50).
As always, you are participating at your own risk.
We would appreciate it if you changed your RSVP no more than 2 days before the event should you find you can no longer attend. No shows or cancellations on the day may result in you being removed from the group.

**Iason Paraskevopoulos**
**Title: Building an OSS Remote Pair Programming App in Rust**
**Abstract:**
Hopp is a multi-user remote control and screen sharing app designed for fast, natural collaboration. This talk walks through how the system works end-to-end, from cross-platform screen capture and input handling to low-latency video streaming. It covers why we chose Tauri for cross-platform development early on, the headaches caused by WebKitâs inconsistencies and WebRTC issues, and why we are moving towards a Rust-native UI.
**David Wood (Rust Compiler Team Co-Lead)**
**Title: Extending Rustâs notions of sizedness**
**Abstract:**
This talk is based on work I am completing upstream as the co-lead of the compiler team and the lead of Armâs Rust team. It is based on this RFC - https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/3729, which is partially implemented. We hope to stabilise the implemented parts before this talk is presented.

Intro to Shaders in Unity
This meetup is a beginner-friendly, hands-on workshop focused on building shaders in Unity using Shader Graph. Instead of slides or theory-heavy lectures, we'll build real shaders together step-by-step.
The format is structured but interactive. You'll watch a quick demo, then build each shader yourself with guidance. By the end, you'll have created multiple shaders you can immediately use in your own projectsâand understand how to make more.
**What to Expect:**
* Build 4â5 complete shaders from scratch
* Color tints, snow accumulation, scrolling water, dissolve effects, and more
* No prior shader experience required
* Checkpoint files provided if you fall behind
* Resources for continued learning
All experience levels are welcome. Whether you've never opened Shader Graph or just want to fill gaps in your knowledge, this is a supportive space to learn by doing.
**Food and drinks provided. Join us to learn, build, and level up your shader skills.**
I added the Unity project to the repo here - https://github.com/EricJRico/IntroToShaders.git
This is what we'll be using for the session.
