Volunteer with us refurbishing donated bicycles to help us get them back out in the community! This event is open to both new and existing volunteers. No mechanical experience is necessary. Note: The warehouse location is in the alley behind 1502. Enter through the gray door next to a roll-down garage door. If you drive to the location, be sure to park in the street, not in the alleys or parking lots surrounding the warehouse. And wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty with bicycle grease! Please be aware that volunteers under 18 need a parent or guardian to accompany them to their first volunteer experience and sign a liability waiver, while volunteers under 16 need a parent or guardian to accompany them at all times while volunteering with Vélocity.

Geared toward those who have, at minimum, an Advanced level of Spanish and would like to keep it up, our group will speak Spanish exclusively over drinks and appetizers. This group meets at the Arlington Board Room on the first Monday of each month. The time is 6:30p to as long as you wish to stay or the restaurant closes! No fee is required to participate. >

We will be participating in a trivia night event at 54 restaurant located at the Springfield Town Center mall on Monday. Trivia starts at 7 pm. Parking: There is free mall parking. There is also paid valet parking if you are feeling bougie. There's a maximum of 7 people per team, so please show up by 6:45 pm so that we organize accordingly. We may field multiple teams depending on turnout. Please plan on arriving and staying for the entire trivia event. To ensure you get a spot on a trivia team: * Please arrive by 6:45 PM, or notify the hosts that you are running late by 6:45 PM. If you arrive after 6:45 or don't notify the hosts, you are not guaranteed a spot on a trivia team and may need to form your own, separate team. * Please RSVP so we know to expect you. Everyone’s heard of book clubs where the group reads the same thing and gets together to discuss, which is great… if you have time and interest in whatever’s chosen. This is a different type of book club where you bring whatever you’re currently or recently reading (or just a book you’re super excited about) and talk about it with fellow book lovers. We’ll start with people arriving/ordering food between 615-645, then go around and introduce ourselveslves and give a very brief synopsis of what we’re reading and why we’re excited (or not!) about it. Then devolve into informal conversations until people need to head out. The goal Is to create community and connections in a group of strangers - to facilitate this please make sure you have at least a clear first name on your profile. Upside on Moore has a great selection of food you can order from your phone or at the kiosks. There’s also a bar with happy hour, something for everyone! Arrival tips: if you’re taking the metro, it’s the building above the Rosslyn exit. If you’re driving, you can park in the public lot under the food hall (entrance from the one way bus street) and validate parking after 6!

Date : Feb 7 2026 13:00 - 15:00 EST Title: Symmetry, Topology, and Magnetoelectric Multiferroicity — Ferroelectric 'Tweezers' for Quantum Magnetism in Hexagonal Ferrites Abstract: The scalability of future quantum and spintronic hardware is currently facing a "physical wall": the challenges of excessive heat dissipation and environmental magnetic noise. To overcome these barriers, materials where magnetism can be controlled with high precision and minimal energy will be highly desirable. Magnetoelectric multiferroic hexagonal rare-earth ferrites (h-RFeO3, R: rare earth) have emerged as an important platform for this mission, offering a unique "playground" where symmetry and topology dictate functionality. In this talk, I will provide a comprehensive overview of research progress on these materials over the last decade. We will explore how a specific structural transition—trimerization—breaks symmetry to create a robust state known as improper ferroelectricity as well as weak ferromagnetism. The coupling between the ferroelectric and magnetic orders leads to a "ferroelectric tweezer" effect, where the material's ferroelectric domain spatially anchors and manipulates magnetic domains. Furthermore, we will address the "readout challenge": how to detect the diminutive magnetic moments inherent in these systems. I will show how the non-coplanar spin topology acts as a signal amplifier, enabling high-fidelity readout of magnetic states through spin-transport. By understanding the "solid science" of these complex oxides, we can define the roadmap for a new generation of stable, low-power topological electronics. Biography: Xiaoshan Xu is Susan J. Rosowski Associate Professor from Department of Physics and Astronomy at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He graduated from Nanjing University in 1997 and 2000 with his bachelor’s and master’s degrees respectively. He received his Ph. D. in Georgia Institute of Technology in 2007. After that, he worked at the University of Tennessee as a postdoctoral researcher and Oak Ridge National Lab as an R&D Associate. He joined the University of Nebraska in 2013. He is a recipient of the Eugene P. Wigner Fellowship of the Oak Ridge National Lab, NSF Early Career Award, and DOE Early Career Award.
