"The Awakening" by Kate Chopin
"The Awakening" by Kate Chopin
\*Please note the change of venue. We are no longer able to meet at Charlies and will be looking for a new venue. !!! Beware of scams! If you have been contacted about featuring your work at our meetings or have been asked for any kind of payment it is a scam. Country: USA Written in: 1899 Pages: 195 While marital infidelity in literature was nothing new in Kate Chopin's time, it was usually under a cloak of guilt and devastation. Chopin's works were seen as scandalous and immoral due to her unapologetic celebration of women's freedom of choice, a strong deviation from previous novels such as Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary. She is celebrated as a pioneer of American feminist literature. Here's [one blogger's review](https://findinghopeness.com/2021/04/11/the-awakening-kate-chopins-still-thought-provoking-novel/): In *The Awakening*, Chopin’s heroine, Edna Pontellier, raised ‘American’ in Kentucky, is married to Leonce Pontellier, a wealthy member of upper-class, Creole society in Louisiana. She and her husband live in New Orleans, the focal point of the unique, French-based Acadian culture. He’s often away to the north, including New York City and Wall Street, as the story unfolds. Though apparently doting, he cares most about the material trappings of wealth, including what today would be called his ‘trophy wife.’ But she dares to question and ultimately rebel against all that. They have two young children; but Edna rejects the prevailing, social attitude that a woman should always sacrifice her needs for the sake of her children; ‘unessential things,’ yes, but not the soul of her being, as she struggles to discover what that is. \*\*\*\*\* **New to the Hungry Hundred Book Club?** Here's what you need to know: 1. Read the book (If you don't manage to finish it by the meetup date, don't worry. As long as you're not going to be too disappointed by spoilers, you're still welcome to join.) 2. Come to the meeting, usually (but not always!) on the last Sunday of every month. 3. Be prepared to order food/drink at the venue to show our appreciation for letting us use their space. This is a requirement. A lot of time and effort has been put into finding a place that will accommodate our group without an outrageous minimum charge or rental fee, and you'll never be asked to contribute to organiser fees, so please show your respect and support for the restaurant that's letting us use their space. 4. Discuss! It's a casual conversation, so don't be afraid to ask questions and let us know what you think.

Wine Adore March Portuguese Wine Tasting | Guided Luxe Tasting Experience
Step into a month-long celebration of Portuguese wine with Wine Adore Singapore. Throughout March, we are dedicating multiple curated sessions to spotlight Portugal’s rich winemaking heritage, diverse regions, and remarkable craftsmanship. Despite its global prestige, Portuguese wine remains underrepresented in Singapore’s wine landscape. This March, we are changing that. Whether you are discovering Portuguese wines for the first time or deepening your appreciation, each session offers a structured yet welcoming exploration in an intimate setting. *** ## **What to Expect** • A guided tasting of 10 Portuguese wines • Insight into regional styles, grape varieties, and heritage • A relaxed yet refined atmosphere • Cheese and charcuterie pairings • A super premium final pour to conclude the evening **No WSET certification is required.** Newcomers are warmly welcomed, while experienced enthusiasts will appreciate the depth of storytelling and curated selection. This is more than a tasting. It is part of a focused effort to bring greater recognition to Portuguese wine within Singapore’s evolving wine community. *** ## **March 2026 Tasting Dates** **Fridays** March 6, 13, 20, 27 4:30 PM or 7:00 PM **Saturdays & Sundays** March 7 to 8 March 14 to 15 March 21 to 22 March 28 to 29 2:00 PM, 4:30 PM, or 7:00 PM **Please note:** Meetup displays only one session timing.
