#117 Friday Beer Bay Gathering @ Pier 4
Come for another casual gathering and chat with peers in the software & technology community. Bring your smile and relax with a refreshing drink.
**Concept** 🍻
It works simple:
1. feel free to arrive and leave at any time during the event
2. get yourself a drink at the bar or convenience store
3. say hi to someone in the group and chat away.
**How to find us?** 👀
Bart/Stephen usually wear something that is easy to spot in a crowd. Often it's a bright coloured t-shirt or something orange themed. Have a look at past photos of meetups to recognise him. Moreover, we usually stand close to the bar.
**Venue** 📍
**The Beer Bay** is an **outdoor kiosk/bar**, situated at the walkway between the Central Ferry Piers, at the ground level **entrance of Central Ferry Pier #4** (to Lamma Island). There's plenty of space to stand, and various places to get drinks. Usually lots of people in conversation, and an overall casual and relaxed atmosphere. In summer it can get hot and sweaty, and winter a bit cold, but drinks are refreshing and nothing beats that skyline!
**Toilets** 🚻
There is a public toilet at the end of the piers near pier 2, or you could walk to the IFC shopping mall nearby.
**Drinks** 🍺🍷🍹🥤
The Beer Bay serves refreshing alcoholic drinks, such as cold drafts, wine and plenty of mixers too. There are also non-alcoholic options from other stands and convenience stores around as well.
See you on Friday June 29!

Swimming at Three Beaches in Lantau Island
We'll walk five minutes from MTR station to the bus terminus to take 9:25 am No. 11 Bus and get off near Lantau South Police Station.
In the morning, we'll swim at Upper Cheung Sha Beach, Lower Cheung Sha Beach (see photo album), Tong Fuk Beach and have lunch in Tong Fuk Village. We'll spend 30 to 45 minutes at each beach and walk to the next one. If you are a good swimmer. you can swim along the coast, but bring a waterproof bag carrying your stuff while swimming. Then you do not need to go back to take your things.
**Important Notes:**
*You must bring a floating aid. I suggest using a waterproof bag designed for water sports. You will need to keep all your belongings inside the bag and swim with it.
*We will enter the water from the rocky area (as shown in the first photo of the album). Because of the rocks, it is recommended to wear water shoes or rubber-soled shoes (like classic white plimsolls / 白飯魚) to protect your feet
\*What to bring: sunscreen, hat ,mosquito repellent, swimming suit, goggles, rubber-soled shoes and floating aids (must) if you are going to swim in the area without lifeguards.
**DISCLAIMER** For this swimming trip, every member joining accepts this agreement: By joining the events of “Biking Swimming Camping Fun”, all participants are deemed to have agreed to exonerate the leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the events from any liabilities, claims, including but not limited to liabilities and claims as a result of any injuries or deaths or damages or penalties arising thereof. HKPUG #99 - "Lie" to me, Python
**Details**
Date: 27 June 2026, Saturday
Time: 15:00 – 18:00 HKT
Venue: BC404, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Capacity: 40 participants
**Please make sure you fill in the google form https://forms.gle/ogJSHfruCnjHNisU6 for Poly University QR Code Access**.
**Topics**
**1\. Mind the Data Gap — Prize Ceremony & Winners’ Sharing**
Speaker: Winning teams / participants
Duration: around 15 minutes
In our previous HKPUG workshop, participants worked in teams on a messy Hong Kong-inspired synthetic transport dataset.
The data was intentionally corrupted with missing values, outliers, inconsistent categories, URL-encoded station names, confusing delimiters, and hidden signals.
Teams had to clean the data and submit their work to a fixed black-box scorer to see whether their cleaning improved model performance.
In this session, we will present the prizes and invite the winning teams / participants to share their approaches.
We will cover:
\- Prize ceremony for the workshop winners
\- How participants approached the data cleaning challenge
\- What kinds of hidden signals were found
\- Common patterns and mistakes we observed
\- What we learned from designing a gamified Python data workshop
No model tuning.
Just data rescuing.
**2\. Python "Lies": Things That Are Not What They Seem**
Speaker: Alex Au
Duration: 15 minutes
Python often reads almost like English — until it does something that is technically correct but completely different from what you expected.
In this rapid-fire talk, Alex will uncover several Python-specific “lies”: late-bound lambdas in loops, mutable default arguments that remember previous calls, nested lists that secretly share the same rows, generators that disappear after one pass, the surprising meaning of for...else, and finally blocks that can rewrite a function’s ending.
Each example begins with a short “guess the output” challenge, followed by an explanation of the Python behaviour hiding underneath.
Things are not always what they seem.
**3\. LEPAUTE Framework — FSD\-style Visual Perception with Lie Group Equivariant Attention**
Speaker: Carson
Duration: around 60 minutes
LEPAUTE is a Python-based visual perception / machine learning framework originally motivated by Tesla FSD-style autonomous driving perception.
Autonomous driving perception is not just about detecting objects in a flat image. A model needs to reason about movement, rotation, position, scale, and viewpoint changes while still understanding the same scene consistently.
In this talk, Carson will introduce the motivation behind LEPAUTE, the core technical ideas, and how Lie group equivariant attention can be applied to 2D visual perception. The session will also include a live or prepared demo.
This talk is suitable for participants interested in Python, machine learning, computer vision, autonomous driving perception, mathematical structures in AI models, and research-oriented software projects.
Note: This is an independent technical sharing and **does not imply affiliation with or endorsement by Tesla**.
**Rundown**

15:45 – 16:10 Mind the Data Gap prize ceremony and winners’ sharing

Scrabble
A chilled-out Saturday afternoon playing Scrabble and/or Upwords.
**The Plan**
* 1400 Arrive at Eaton Hotel - go to the food court on Lower Ground floor & look for a table with a Scrabble box.
* Stay and play as long as you want to!
**What To Do**
1. RSVP here
2. Please ensure the organiser knows your Meetup username & the name/pronouns you usually use. If you’re new and/or don’t yet know the organiser, please DM the organiser with this information via Meetup, or join the Scrabble WhatsApp chat within the Tandem community.
**Please note:**
1. Tandem is a community of volunteers; everything you see is created by our members giving up their time and labour. None of our organisers profit from events; any charges listed are those from other parties and we never add a mark-up. In this context, we need attendees to do their best to reduce the workload of our volunteer team by reading the event description and these notes carefully; and follow the instructions in order to register a place on the event. Please be considerate and helpful with our team – we are all volunteers.
2. If you require special accessibility accommodations for the event (i.e., accessible venue, accessible restrooms, noise levels, lighting conditions, etc) and are unsure whether they can be met, please reach out to the organiser/host.
3. We encourage language inclusivity at all our events. If you aren't confident in English, please let our team know. We will try to provide bilingual support where possible and/or will try and introduce you to other language speakers you're more comfortable with. Please be mindful that we might not be able to accommodate all languages at all events, but we will do our best to make everyone feel welcome and heard.
4. If you sign up, but can no longer make it, please update your RSVP as soon as possible and tell the organiser. Updating your RSVP well ahead of the event allows us to manage the waitlist; allow other people to attend; know who to look out for at the start of the event; and manage any relevant bookings, such as table reservations.
5. If you don’t have a clear face pic on your profile and/or your username doesn’t match the name you normally use, we can’t identify your payments nor match your RSVP with who you are in real life. If this is you, please ensure the organiser knows who you are. If we can’t work out who you are within 24hrs of your RSVP, we will move you to “Not Going”.
6. Only group members and their guests with an RSVP may attend events; people who aren’t signed up will be refused entry to events.
7. If you don’t follow the conditions above, we will move you to “Not Going” for future events until you message us to confirm you will follow these conditions.
