May 2026 - Strange Houses - Uketsu
May 2026 - Strange Houses - Uketsu
For our fifth book of 2026, we have a Japanese bestselling mystery. 'When a writer fascinated by the macabre is approached by an acquaintance, he finds himself investigating an eerie house for sale in Tokyo. At first, with its bright and spacious interior, it seems the perfect first home. But upon closer inspection, the building’s floor plans reveal a mysterious "dead space” hidden between its walls. Seeking a second opinion, the writer shares the floor plans with his friend Kurihara, an architect, only to discover more unnerving details throughout. What is the true purpose behind the house’s disturbing design? And what happened to the former owners who disappeared without a trace? When a body suddenly appears and a young woman reaches out about a second house, it soon becomes clear that the writer and his friend may be in over their heads.' This book is available on Kindle. For international delivery you can find it from Blackwells and it may also be available at the library or an English language book store. We are a "real" book club, which means we do read the book before the meet-up and discuss it. New members are always welcome. We need to notify the venue about how many will attend, so please make sure your RSVP status is accurate. Hope to see you there!

Visit the temples along QRE (皇后大道東) in Wan Chai
Visit the temples along QRE (皇后大道東) in Wan Chai
Those of you who are familiar with Wan Chai might know about the temple along Queen's Road East dedicated to the deity **[Hung Shing (灣仔洪聖廟)](https://temples.tungwahcsd.org/hung-shing-templepak-shing-hau-temple-wanchai)** along what used to be the Victoria Harbour shoreline. There is another, larger temple not far away with an even more interesting past. The **[Yuk Hui Temple (玉虛宮)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wan_Chai_Pak_Tai_Temple)** is dedicated to **Pak Tai (北帝),** the Emperor of the North, and stands as a testament to the fact that a little corner of Wan Chai was a center of wealth and prosperity for not only English traders but also resident Chinese merchants. The temple has a host of deities, such as **Kwun Yam (觀音), Kwan Tai (關帝), and Lui Cho (呂祖)**. Most interestingly, the dedicated to the **Dragon Mother (龍 母殿**) is rare as Taoist goddesses are few and far between. The temple's rooftop figures are amazing and include a pair of dragons, a firing pearl, two aoyus (鰲魚, dragon fish), figurines of Chinese opera, floral patterns, etc., made by a Shiwan kiln, dated 1907. All precious and virtually unreplaceable by today's standards. Afterwards, we can head over to Hung Shing (灣仔洪聖廟) and peek in and see how the temple is maintaining itself. We'll also see a statue of the elusive fertility / widwife goddess **[Kam Fa Neung Neung (金花娘娘](https://ting902.com/2020/08/20/the-fertility-goddess-a-visit-to-hong-kongs-golden-flower-temple/))** We'll meet at street level, just outside Pacific Place 3, exit F, and down the long corridor BEFORE you enter the Pacific Place shopping mall. We'll walk down QRE to the Yuk Hui / Pak Tai Temple and then backtrack.
Curiosity Unleashed: The Deck Builder Challenge
Curiosity Unleashed: The Deck Builder Challenge
*"The best questions aren't always the ones we're asked—they're the ones we create together."* Usually, at a Curious Souls Café gathering, you arrive to find a carefully curated deck of questions waiting for you. This time, we are flipping the script: **you** are the conversation designer. Every great discussion starts with a spark of curiosity. In this special interactive event, we aren't just answering questions; we are building the game from the ground up. We will split into small teams, pick our own unique themes, and use our [Deck Builder](https://curioussouls.cafe/tools/builder/) webapp to co-create custom decks with AI on the fly. Will your team build a deck about navigating the modern workplace? A lighthearted round of nostalgic "What Ifs"? Or a deep dive into the unwritten rules of life? The direction of the night is entirely in your hands! Bring your creativity, a collaborative spirit, and an open mind. Let's discover what happens when we unleash our collective curiosity. **Inviting those who...** 🎨 Want to flex their creative muscles and design a conversation experience for others. 🤝 Enjoy collaborative team-building and bonding over shared ideas in a low-pressure setting. 📱 Are eager to test out a fun, interactive web tool to guide real-world connections. 🗣️ Hope to connect with kindred spirits in a judgment-free space where every voice shapes the night. **📅 Agenda / What You'll Experience** **💬 Phase 1: The Designer's Studio** After a brief welcome, we will group into small teams. Using your smartphones, your team will decide on a topic and use our [Deck Builder](https://app.curioussouls.cafe/builder/about/) app (with the help of its AI Generator) to draft a custom deck of 5 to 10 meaningful questions. **🎲 Phase 2: The Roll & Share** Once the decks are built, the host will roll the virtual 3D dice to decide which person goes first. That person will generate a QR code directly on their screen. Everyone else simply scans their phone, and the game begins! **💬 Phase 3: Prompted Conversations** We will play through the winning person's custom deck, enjoying the unique flavor and perspective they brought to the table. After a while, we'll roll the dice again and scan the next person's QR code, rotating until everyone has had a chance to "host" a round. From there, we’ll embark on a respectful, engaging, and meaningful conversation, celebrating the diversity of perspectives and ideas within the group. *Note: This session requires a smartphone per person to access the builder via a web link. If you do not have a device, don't worry—you can easily team up with someone who does or ask our facilitator for support!* **💬 Final Thoughts and Feedback** Where time allows, in the final 10 minutes of the event, we’ll take a moment to reflect on the key insights, memorable moments, and takeaways from our discussions. This is a chance to distill the shared wisdom and leave with a deeper understanding of the topics we’ve explored together. After the event officially concludes, the group may choose to extend the session, depending on the group’s interest. To explore what our events are like, check out our official website at [https://curioussouls.cafe](https://curioussouls.cafe) ⚠️ **Content Guideline**: Because participants will be generating their own discussion prompts, we ask everyone to keep their questions respectful, inclusive, and appropriate for a diverse public setting. If your team uses the app's AI Generator, you'll notice an "Extra Empathy" filter is active by default—this is designed to shift the focus from "wounds to wisdom" and actively avoid heavy triggers. We encourage depth and curiosity, but please steer clear of overly sensitive, explicit, or hostile topics to maintain a safe space for all attendees. 📍 Location City: Hong Kong Address: Empire Centre, 68 Mody Road, Tsim Sha Tsui East Inside the shopping mall of Empire Centre, there is a large open area dedicated to a café. We will sit at a round table or sofa inside (near a Hang Seng ATM or 7-Eleven store). Please look for the big words "Curious Souls Café" on our table. If you take the MTR, the nearest station and exit will be East Tsim Sha Tsui Station (Exit P1). From there, you can walk to Empire Centre, which is just a few minutes away. Google Maps link: [maps.app.goo.gl/51Jr8qxY4q5YLQ6q7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/51Jr8qxY4q5YLQ6q7) 🈚 Free of Charge While there is no charge to attend, we kindly encourage you to support the venue by purchasing a drink and/or any items from their menu. Note: This event is not affiliated with the restaurant, or any third-party names mentioned. ✨ What is Curious Souls Café? Welcome to [Curious Souls Café](https://curioussouls.cafe/about/)! 👋 Designed to nurture healthy curiosity and foster connections, this is a warm and friendly space for meaningful conversations. 😊 We invite you to join us for an experience filled with thought-provoking dialogue, meaningful connections, and personal growth. We look forward to meeting you at one of our events in the future!

In this session we'll explore strategies to protect our codebases through unit and integration testing, documentation, and code review along with additional ways of providing context and guard rails to our AI agents as they carry out the work we've assigned them to do. By the time we're done, you'll have a firm grasp of the problem and understand some helpful options for protecting your codebase from vibe coding mishaps getting YOLOed into prod. **YouTube Link** https://youtube.com/live/BltmWMH1zG0?feature=share
