Maki-e is a traditional Japanese lacquer decoration technique. Techiniques are involved drawing pictures, patterns, and letters on the surface of lacquerware using lacquer, and then sprinkling and fixing metal powder, such as gold or silver, onto the surface. In our workshop, you have the opportunity to create maki-e designs using traditional Japanese patterns (wagara) or your own original designs. This circular walk takes us into the Ooijpolder, a former swamp area to the east of Nijmegen city centre, which is now a nature reserve. Since drying out, it has now become home to a variety of vegetation and wildlife thanks to various rewilding projects. There are wild horses, cows, beavers and an increasing number of bird species. From the meeting point we will be in the Ooijpolder in about 5 minutes. We will start by walking along the river for a while where there are some small sandy beaches. Then we will head inland through part of the reserve and do a circuit around the beautiful Bisonbaai. Then we can stop at the Oortjeshekken café for refreshments before heading back towards the city. The walk is a mixture of paved and unpaved paths and mostly level. Good footwear is required. We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM. It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily.
