Dulwich Park Nordic Walking
Ready to get outside? Our Thursday morning session in Dulwich park is back!
At this moment we can meet with up to 30 people (of more than two households) to do outdoor exercise and walks. However, i like to keep our exercise groups small, so I have set the maximum participants at 12.
For now this walk is for our experienced Nordic Walkers only, who already used to Nordic Walk with us regularly before Covid 19 kept us indoors, and who have their own Nordic Walking poles.
As this session is outdoors, we will not ask you to wear a face mask, but we do ask you to keep 2 meters apart. Some of our walkers might be immune compromised or more at risk, so please help us keep everyone safe!
Please do not come to the session and stay at home if:
- you know you have been in contact - in the last 2 weeks- with someone with symptoms of possible Covid, or if you have been in contact with someone who tested positive.
- you have any of the following symptoms: (new) Loss of smell/taste, Persistent cough, Fatigue, Loss of appetite, Skin rash, Hives, Fever, Severe muscle pain, Shortness of breath, Diarrhoea, Delirium, Abdominal pain, Chest pain, Hoarse voice, Eye soreness, Sore or painful throat, Nausea or vomiting, Headache, Dizziness or light headedness
We meet by the cafe in the middle of the park.
Session Price: £10 per session, £89 for a 10-session card or £70 unlimited sessions per month. Session cards and pay Monthly can be used in any of our outdoor walks or indoor Zoom classes sessions (except for the Parkinson's sessions).
Pay What Works:
The price shown above is the “true” value of the session that best reflects the work I put into preparing and leading your session. However, I understand that not everyone can afford to pay full price, and I don’t want that to stop you from joining us.
In an effort to find a balance between more financial accessibility and sustainable pricing, I now offer a “Pay What Works” model. This allows for financial flexibility while still valuing and respecting the work and energy I provide in creating and delivering these classes.
Then send an email to ailien@fitandhappyoutdoors.com with the heading “INVOICE please”- followed by “FAHO 1” to pay full price as quoted below, “FAHO 2”, for 20% off, or “FAHO 3” for 50% off.
Pllease do tell me if you want to pay for 10 sessions, or if you’d like to pay monthly.
I prefer payment by bank transfer, but if that is not possible you could pay in cash. No cheques please, the queues by the banks are just too long.
We walk in all safe weather conditions – if a walk is cancelled, we will contact you to let you know. Please check for text messages or Meetup messages before leaving home!
Thursday 5km run followed by pub drinks
Please join us for our weekly run and social - a great (free!) way to meet new people!
We meet at 7pm outside The Horatia ( https://maps.app.goo.gl/p1QnyurFQh3gywov6) and head for the run together from there. You can leave a small bag or extra layer at the pub at your own risk.
The winter route is around Highbury Fields and in the summer we do a loop to Clissold Park, both ending at the starting point- the Horatia pub.
We run 5km at an easy pace (about 6-7 mins per km), with some people going faster and some slower.
After the run, we will head to the Horatia pub for some drinks (alcoholic and soft are fine- no judgment!).
Summer social drinks for new and existing members
Join us for a relaxed social evening for our hiking community! Whether you’ve joined us on past walks, or are simply curious about coming along, this is a great chance to meet fellow hikers and group leaders in a friendly setting.
Catch up with people you’ve shared the trail with, swap stories and welcome new faces who are thinking about joining future hikes.
We’ve reserved a private area upstairs in a welcoming pub, just a short walk from Waterloo Station. Food and drinks will be available, with a special discount on food for our group, so come along, unwind and enjoy a sociable evening with like-minded outdoor enthusiasts.

London Indoor Bouldering Evening
Join OutdoorLads popular weekly Thursday Bouldering evening at The Arch in Bermondsey.
OutdoorLads London boulderers welcome all members of the LGBTQ+ community You'll be meeting with a supportive group of 5 to 10 plus boulderers who are always happy to introduce complete beginners or solve difficult bouldering problems with enthusiasts. We usually follow up with a pub visit.
This event is for members of all levels of experience and all are welcome to come along to any of the sessions.
Bouldering is a form of climbing where instead of long high routes, the 'problems', as they are referred to, tend to be shorter and focus on technique, balance, body positioning and sometimes power. Because of this different emphasis, bouldering doesn't have the hassle of climbing with ropes, harnesses and belaying, which makes the activities excellent for newcomers to the sport.
If you're a seasoned climber you won't need convincing about the benefits of bouldering, but for those who've never climbed more than a staircase, the benefits are wide ranging: from the physical - improved strength, tone, balance, power and coordination; mental - problem solving, focus, concentration and body awareness; to the emotional - relaxation, a sense of achievement and a feeling that mind and body are working together perfectly ('feeling psyched'). On top of all this, bouldering tends to be a very social sport where you can hang out with mates and each have a go as you feel regardless of what level you climb at.

City of London Free Tour
Hi,
This free tour will start next to Farringdon Station and finish next to Tate Modern. Our journey will be packed with history related to the Great Fire of London, the history of medicine, public executions, post office, and more. My job is to make sure everyone learns something new in a fun and interesting way, everyone gets a new perspective on this part of London, and everyone has a great time. These are just some of the things we will visit and discuss:
\- Fascinating history of London's oldest operating market
\- A spot where William Wallace and many others were executed
\- Oldest hospital in London
\- Why is St Paul's Cathedral decorated with pineapples?
\- When was it possible to catch a tube to see a public execution?
\- Hidden secret on Millennium Bridge
\- Surprising reason a part of Tate Modern is abandoned
I hope to see you on the tour!

HOLBORN BY ZOOX*
(pictured: the south elevation of the British Museum: the sculptures in the pediment represent 'the progress of civilisation')
If, after they start on London’s streets this September, you book an autonomous ‘Zoox, and say, 'Holborn', the chances are you'll be taken to the tube station, at Kingsway.
On this walk we're going to learn about robotic taxis, buses, and delivery vehicles, where they’re operating, and how they could change the public realm, in Holborn, the first local area to expand outside the City of London, now densely populated with pedestrians, lorries and bikes.
In the 1900’s, Holborn was the smallest of the Metropolitan Boroughs, but had a population density of 30K people per km2, twice that of the current most densely populated borough, Tower Hamlets.
Plus, as we walk the 2 km, clear across the diminutive borough, from Farringdon to Tottenham Court Road, we’ll see how London local administration started, before maps, from areas defined only by posts, based on churches (vestries, parishes and single-purpose district boards) to Metropolitan Boroughs, and today’s London Boroughs, an ongoing process of amalgamation leading to larger units, following a falling population, and sometimes leading to mismatched places.
For example, the location of ‘Holborn’, like the constantly-shifting magnetic North Pole, has wandered, as the area it administered grew, now over a mile west from the lower River Fleet, then known as ‘The Holbourn’, where it was first used.
After the Metropolitan Borough was created in 1900, its Town Hall, Offices, Post Office, Library and Swimming Pool were even further west, and not even in one of the several Holborn church-based parishes.
We’ll meet at Farringdon Station and start at the site of the Holbourn Bridge, a crossing the open ditch that flowed into the Thames 700m to the south.
The path of the ancient ‘Holbourn Hill’, which climbed the west side of the valley, is now occupied by the modern ‘Viaduct’.
Both arrived at the parish church of ‘St Andrew Holborn’, on this site since the 1200’s, rebuilt by Wren in 1690, his largest, gutted in WW2 and repaired in 1960.
For centuries, this local Church of England was the basis of local administration, which mostly consisted of regulating sanitation and hygiene, and the relief of the poor.
After Holborn Circus comes the street called ‘Holborn’, broad and still climbing, but only 250m long, bringing us to the old site of the Holborn ‘Bar’, the boundary of the City of London, at Gray’s Inn Road, still marked by 2 City Dragons, and the highest point in the City of London.
Then ‘High’ Holborn, sometimes described as ‘sterile’ and ‘a desert’, now lined with unoccupied office buildings, but showing glimpses on both sides of the swathe of lawyers’ precincts, which extend down to the Thames.
Our ‘Zoox’ drops us near Kingsway, then it, and we, calmly and safely, use the ‘Pedestrian Scramble’ (aka: ‘all-way’ or a ‘Barnes Dance’) crossing.
As we do, we leave the last vestige of the influence of the original parish of St Andrew.
From this point we are in Bloomsbury, and yet here is the original Borough Public Library (originally called 'St Giles') , later extended in 1908 to form a Town Hall for the new Metropolitan Borough, and the Oasis Sports Centre, opened as the ‘Bloomsbury Baths and Washhouses in 1852, and rebuilt and reopened in 1902 as the ‘Holborn Baths’.
London being a treasure storehouse, there are masterpieces we must see in passing:
· the hardly-ever-looked-at north elevation of Sir John Soane’s over-touristed House and Museum
· a surprise as it suddenly jumps out in narrow Great Russell Street, the south elevation of Robert Smirke’s 1842-7 British Museum: ‘the Erechtheion recreated’\*. Still amazing that we have, right here in Holborn, an almost exact copy of a temple from the Acropolis.
· St George, Bloomsbury Way, (1716-31), ‘ the most grandiose of London’s 18th Century church fronts’\*\*, and Hawksmoor’s last building, has a hidden-away tower which was originally the entrance.
· a ‘masterpiece’, but of planning policy: the Roof Garden of the Post Building, from which we may see all of Holborn\*\*\*
· Central St Giles, by Renzo Piano, which surrounds an achingly minimal central space, whose purity seems to be a psychic remembrance of unspeakably awful, impenetrable ‘rookery’(=slum), which occupied the site until deliberately eliminated by new road schemes in the 1840’s.
· now edging, by ageing, into masterpiece status, Richard Seifert’s Centre Point, said to have been designed by one of his associates.
The walk will end at the world’s very first ‘Pizza Express’ at 10 Dean Street W1D 3RW.
\* Amazon’s autonomous taxi brand. Launch date as currently expected. The taxi could also be an Uber ‘Wayve’, or an Alphabet ‘Waymo’.
\*\*Summerson, ‘Georgian London’ & Pevsner, ‘The Buildings of England’, 1952-2002

National Gallery Visit + Social Meetup
**Let’s spend a relaxed Sunday afternoon exploring the National Gallery together, followed by a friendly social meetup at a nearby café or pub.**
For our first event, I’ve chosen a central location to make it easy for everyone to join.
This is a welcoming, low‑pressure event — perfect for anyone who enjoys culture, travel, photography, or simply meeting new people in a friendly environment.
## **📍 Meeting Point**
## We’ll meet outside the Sainsbury Wing entrance of the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 5DN.
If you have any issues finding the group, **send me a message through Meetup**.
I’ll be standing near the entrance so you can easily spot me. Please arrive a few minutes early so we can start together.
## **🖼️ What we’ll do**
We’ll spend around **60 minutes** exploring a selection of rooms inside the National Gallery. No need to be an art expert — this is relaxed, friendly, and open to everyone.

Welcome to another one of the WALK events where you have the opportunity to explore all the scenic routes I’ll execute whether there’s nature within, whether we get immersed within the city and feel great about yourself.
With this particular walk, we will be walking through Green park. During this walk, you get immersed within nature and familiar with the park itself but most importantly, you have the opportunity to feel healthy and stress free after this walk and possibly the opportunity to form friendships.

Let’s all be responsible but please be aware you come at your own risk. Do be mindful of your possessions, belongings and most importantly, your safety. The ‘London society of explorers’ accept no risk of liability at this event.

Walking Group for All Ages
Craving community? Just want to take a walk in nature with others? Want some time in nature?
Join folks from Church of the Covenant, a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) church, for a casual walk in nature on the 4th Sunday of each month. We're channeling calmness, community, and connection in hopes that we'll leave the walk feeling refreshed, renewed, and recharged.
We call this our "Early Bird Fellowship." We'll meet at the playground at Potomac Overlook Regional Park then take a 30min stroll. All are welcome --- pets, kids, all ages

\*\* This is a no pressure gathering for folks who want intentional community.
Energizing Walk for Busy People!
Join our weekly walking meetup to have fun, maintain a healthy lifestyle, meet new people, and enjoy nature! We meet Saturdays at 10am, by the bike racks and benches 150 feet in front of BUBBLES Hair Salon in Reston, leaving no later than 10:05.
Every week we'll walk the Green Trail to Lake Anne Plaza (\~1 mile), pause there for 5-10 minutes (water, bio, and from April-Nov a Farmer's Market), then circle the lake (2 miles) before returning to our starting point. It's roughly 3.5 miles and takes about an hour and a half.
Afterwards, some members will often head to a local restaurant to refuel and relax before tackling the rest of the day.
This event is open to all ages and fitness levels, and both friends and dogs are always welcome! We recommend dressing for the weather (umbrella, water bottle, snow shoes, hat, etc.) since we'll always walk, rain or shine.
By signing up, you accept and assume all risks and responsibilities with this activity, and nobody will be held liable.
Paws in the Park 🐈🪁🌳
Meet fellows cat lovers, cats, and enjoy the summer weather 🌳🌳🌳
Walking your pet isn’t just for dogs, but cats too! It’s a source of enrichment for them and a great chance for both you and your cat to get some fresh air. This is an opportunity to socialize your cat with people and other cats in a neutral and safe environment.
Feel free to come without your cat (or if you don’t have one) if you just want to socialize and your kitty would rather relax inside 😌❤️
If you do bring a cat, make sure your cat is wearing a collar and has on a harness/leash, is in a cat backpack, a cat carrier, or a cat stroller. Misty and I can’t wait to meet you! Let your cats enjoy the relaxing outdoors.
This is a great opportunity for more beginner cat walkers!
Moving this event to be an hour earlier than typical to try and beat some of the summer heat at the beginning of the day.
🅿️ Parking: There is plenty of free parking in Rockcreek Park.

The disco lights are taking a breather, but Social Sips & Bites is keeping the high energy alive in the great outdoors. We are hitting the trails, and the timing couldn't be better.

Whether you’re recovering from the last party or prepping for the next one, this is the perfect excuse to get outside, move your feet, and meet some incredible people.

Embassy Walk in Van Ness w/ UDC & HU school of law
**This jovial jaunt is a** **paved** **3.8mile mostly easy walk with some hidden hills & full of stairs (270 in total). Pace: 3mph.** The trek traverses embassies as well as academic campuses in D.C.'s Van Ness neighborhood... *Can you enumerate all the embassies?*
The walk first frolics about the University of D.C. (UDC) with an 'amphitheater ascent' that leads to the [Henderson Sports complex](https://www.udcfirebirds.com/general/2021-22/releases/20220219d185lb), which was named after the "Father of Black Basketball". The circuit then embraces enigmatic embassies that are collectively known as the International Chancery Center [(ICC)](https://www.state.gov/international-chancery-center/). After ambling through alleys the trek pauses parallel to International Park.
Latter of the circuit descends a snaky staircase then creeps by an eerie alley of eyes before encircling new & old Howard University (HU) School of Law buildings, including a Kennedy Center look-a-like known as the [Allen Mercer Daniel Library](https://www.tumblr.com/dcsojourn/137654182949/howard-universitys-bizarre-abandoned-allen); enjoy a vacuous vista of D.C. here. Following a gander at a grandiloquent grotto the walk concludes among terracing towers.

Mt Kilimanjaro Trek! One of the 7 Summits. Join us on this bucket list adventure
**Our Meetup is off to another hiking adventure! Mt Kilimanjaro, as the tallest mountain in Africa, is included in the 7 Summits of the world.**
**It is a bucket-list item for all hard-core hikers and mountain lovers.**
We did this trek with Meetup in the summer of 2024 and it was a true experience of a lifetime (see photos below)
Let's get to some numbers. It is 5,895m/19,340ft
BUT . . . our starting elevation for the trek is 3795m/12541ft
As such elevation gain is 2100m/6799ft
To compare Everest Base Camp trek, is about 2754m/9035ft elevation change. And Mt Whitney is about 1828m/6000ft elevation change.
The key to being able to succeed in this endeavor lays in the route and the support system.
We are taking the Lemosho Route via the Northern Circuit. The Northern Circuit route is the longest and newest of the seven established Kilimanjaro routes. It's one of the best routes because it has the best acclimatization profile. This results in one of the highest summit success rates. Add to that stunning views, and comparatively relaxed pace. It is also much less crowded than the other Kilimanjaro routes.
As far as our support system: We will be accompanied by experienced guides, porters and cooks. They are certified, ensuring our safety and comfort. Porters will carry our gear.
We will have a high ratio of guides to hikers. Our guides will go our pace and support each and everyone of us, regardless of fitness level and pace. In other words...you go your own speed and we all get there safe.
More about our trek/trip.
As with all our international trips, we picked the best season/time of year to go for weather and wildlife. Lemosho and Northern Circuit is a scenically spectacular and varied route. At the lower elevations it has an abundance of wildlife such as elephant, buffalo, eland and lion which come over to forage during dry season.
**Each of our trips is personally crafted to offer the best places and best use of time.**
*But I don't have the needed gear?!*
You don't need much more than the standard trekker's equipment. We will provide you with a list of what is already included and what can be rented there.
*Does this include food?*
All meals on the trek potion are included and a cook travels with us!
*What is lodging like?*
We are sleeping in new and comfortable tents (carried during the day by porters)
*I am new at this.*
That's OK. We do plenty of prep Zooms before we depart. And in California we have a number of local outdoor day or weekend outings you can test out with us.
*How dangerous is this? What if I get sick or hurt?*
We will be walking on an established, well used trail the entire time. **Our trip INCLUDES emergency insurance.** We are also Certified Wilderness First Responders and our guides are members of (AMREF) Flying Doctor.
**Plain and simple, safety is our primary goal.**
*How much does this cost?*
**Kilimanjaro Mountain Trek $3950 per person, double occupancy. Land only (airfare not included). Solo supplement $600**
Trip Cost includes:
\- 9 nights accommodation
\- 3 meals everyday on the trek
\- All Fees & Entrances and Taxes
