Cosy Cave Conversations // 10Úme // Café philo in English
**Step into the laid-back charm of Cosy Cave Conversations**, a Parisian philosophy chat that's more relaxed than a cat in a sunbeam đ đ Gather with a bunch of easygoing souls, share thoughts on the good life and its mysteries, enjoy a beverage, and have a good laugh.
A few things to be aware of:
* **Please** **don't show up without a spot** (we aim to keep it cosy and we always have a waiting list these days â check if youâre on the list or the waiting list)
* If it's your first event, it's essential you **turn up early, or at the latest on time (<7pm)** so you understand how it works, what the topic is and don't interrupt the session
* The **session runs from 7pm to 8:30pm** where we focus on the discussion, but don't worry, you'll have a chance to socialise, introduce yourselves and continue the chat after the session.
**If youâre running late** (the curtains are closed), thatâs okay, but please wait to join us in the break rather than interrupting the session.
* Please read the **tips below** for a good session before coming along
**How does it work?** We embrace the cafĂ©-philo method â proposing intriguing topics on the night (up to 3), choosing one together, and diving into everything from consciousness, community, death and god, while managing to keep it light and easy đŠŠ
**Forget the stiff atmosphere**, we're all about small groups (\~10 people) and unpretentious chats with no homework required. No need for a philosophy degree, just bring your open mind and a dash of curiosity.
**Join us every Wednesday 19h-20h30 at Les Acolytes** â because pondering the profound is better with good company (and a pint). See you there! đ
A few tips for a great session:
* come with an **open and curious mind** đ§
* **prioritise listening to others and asking questions** without interrupting or long monologues đ
* we put a strong **emphasise on giving everyone a chance to contribute to the discussion**, so try and be aware of how much space and time you take up when speaking đ»ââïž
* we prioritise **intellectual accessibility**: this is not an academic group therefore we ask to keep any philosophy jargon to a minimum and instead explain any concepts in plain english đ€
* we are an **apolitical group** that focuses on discussing and exploring philosophical ideas without endorsing or aligning with any specific political or religous ideologies. Our aim is to encourage open, unbiased dialogue centered on philosophical inquiry within a safe and respectful environment đ„

7 Mile Brooklyn Bridge Hike
We'll be starting from Herald Square, zig-zagging down Manhattan through Madison Square Park, Union Square, St. Marks Place, Astor Place, Washington Square Park, Bleecker Street, Little Italy, and Chinatown, then across the Brooklyn Bridge, then down the Brooklyn Promenade.
After directing everybody where to go to get the R/2/3/4/5 trains home, those interested will stop for dinner at a diner that does separate checks and takes credit cards. We should be reaching the restaurant around 5:15 pm. The hike will be during Daylight Savings, so the sun will set about an hour after we get to the restaurant.
We should be reaching the restaurant at about 5:15pm, 31 minutes before sunset.
There are no vaccine or mask mandates, neither to attend the hike nor to attend dinner at the end.
Many years ago, this meetup would do Brooklyn Bridge hikes. This hike will begin at a different place than those hikes and be about a mile longer.
We'll be starting in Herald Square, just north of the Broadway entrance to Macy's, near the entrance and roughly halfway between 34th & 35th Streets. There are restrooms available at Macy's in the basement -- the women's room is in the northeast corner, and the men's room is in the middle of the southern edge of the basement. Make sure you use the bathroom, because after that, the next bathroom won't be until Washington Square Park.
Attendance on this hike is free, and all participants attend at their own risk. By attending, you consent to the terms of the release waiver. In it, you basically give up any right whatsoever to sue, to the fullest extent possible by law. You can read the waiver here: **[http://bluejacket7.com/legal/WalkingWaiver.doc](http://bluejacket7.com/legal/WalkingWaiver.doc)**

\# Arrival\, Weather\, & Cancellations
Please come to the starting point 10 minutes ahead of time so the hike can start promptly. Times are our best estimates; they can vary depending on conditions, and the size and pace of a group. If you have any questions, call the leader. **Temperatures above 90 degrees and steady rain cancels, but intermittent drizzle does not. You will *not* be notified.** **Bring water. Wear hiking boots, preferably waterproof with good soles and traction devices and bring poles (optional).** Dogs are not allowed on hikes unless specified.
These hikes are publicized first to SMC members and then advertised to the public one week before a hike. There is a limit of 25 participants, so pre-registration is required at least two days before a hike to sign the liability waiver online and allow lists to be sent to hike leaders. If you have registered and then find you cannot attend, please cancel your order online. **Repeated no shows without prior cancellation will result in removal from list.**

Saturday Hike at Garret Mountain
Meet in the lot at 10am, hike begins promptly at 10:15am.
We will hike a portion of the yellow/white trail for 3 miles. Trails are well blazed with a few inclines that will raise the heart rate but overall below moderate level hike.
This is a hike scheduled in February, so if there has been snow and/or rain recently and there is cold weather then spikes may also be recommended.
Meet in "Garret Mt. Parking Lot" (search Google Maps, Park Rd and approx pin location)
Map
https://www.nynjtc.org/sites/default/files/Garret%20Map%20%28edition%201.1%29_0.pdf
This is an outdoor hike in the woods so conditions may include: ice, snow, mud, wet leaves, slippery rocks, fallen logs, crossing streams, and other elements of nature. Wearing proper footwear is a must. I also recommend bringing at least one bottle of water and a snack.
You are responsible for our own safety when participating in any Meetup activity

Welcome! We are planning a train-accessible hike on February 28th. The plan is to take the Metro North from Grand Central and head to Cold Spring in the Hudson Valley. If you want to drive, feel free to meet us at the trailhead.
We will organize through WhatsApp so let me know your number when your attendance is confirmed.
Trail: Bull Hill Short Loop (Or Full Loop if morale is good!)

Plan for an all day event. Please reach out if you have questions!
Hike Along the Hudson River Manhattan West Side
Let's do a hike along the Hudson River Greenway on Manhattan's west side. Starting at West 181st Street and Riverside Drive we'll walk south along the Hudson River on the west side to either Chelsea or the Village. We'll pass the Little Red Lighthouse, Intrepid Museum and Hudson Yards. The hike is not difficult, but it is about 9 miles of walking. If you get tired and want to leave early the subway is not too far away. We can get drinks or something to eat after the hike too.

**DRIVERS:** I don't know about parking near our meeting point. You will need to take the subway or Uber to get back to your cars at the end of the day.
**FOOD:** Bring a lunch and plenty of water. We will take a lunch break somewhere along the hike.
**IF YOU ARE LATE:** Please get off the subway at a stop further downtown and meet us in the park as we walk south. I can't keep a large group waiting for latecomers. You can message me on the Meetup app and I'll look out for you. Here's a Google Map of our route [https://maps.app.goo.gl/SxiPvM5cBUej5o9w7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/SxiPvM5cBUej5o9w7)
Wear comfortable shoes. Can't wait to see you.

Arden Point & Glenclyffe trail to Sugarloaf Hill Hike
Many of us have hiked the trails around the Garrison train station. Let's spend more time here and hike the Arden Point trail. There are some nice views along the Hudson from Arden Point. We will then continue on the Glenclyffe trail and make our way to Sugarloaf Hill. The summit is partially wooded but has a nice viewpoint looking down the Hudson River Valley towards the Bear Mountain Bridge (one of my favorite views). The steepest sections of the trail are within the last half mile approaching the top.
While Arden Point is considered easy, the Sugarloaf Hill section is considered moderately difficult. You can wait at the base for the group to return if you want to skip this part. The viewpoint is a great place to have lunch.
Let's meet at Grand Central at 8:30 and catch the 8:50 train to Garrison (arriving at 10:12). Meet at the info booth at the food court level, down the ramp from the Oyster Bar.
Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes/boots. Also bring a packed lunch.
We will need to be mindful of weather conditions particularly snow and ice. I may need to reschedule if these conditions are prevalent.
