In reality, they often become expensive black boxes that are hard to adapt, slow to evolve, and difficult to operate. In this talk, we will share the story of how our team replaced an enterprise route planning solution with our own system built on Azure Durable Functions. Instead of fighting the limitations of a monolithic product, we designed a cloud-native orchestration engine that is simpler, faster to iterate on, and easier to understand. By leveraging Durable Functions, we implemented complex routing workflows, parallel processing, and long-running optimizations without introducing heavy infrastructure. This talk is not about theoretical architecture. It is s a practical story of replacing enterprise software with a cloud-native approach, and what worked (and what didn’t) along the way.
