Humming Traditions: SODAI - Straw, Form & Wind
Humming Traditions: SODAI - Straw, Form & Wind
An immersive workshop for adults — quiet hands, patient minds, and those who enjoy the slow rhythm of creation. 🌿Limited spots — please register early to reserve yours. 🌿Date: 27th of November 🌿Time: 18:30-20:30 🌿Location: Augasse 2-6 (an old WU building) Step into the gentle rhythm of creation and discover Sodai, traditional Lithuanian straw mobiles that once filled homes with balance, harmony, and quiet beauty. In this workshop, we will explore the geometry of air, learning how to prepare and string straw into delicate symmetrical forms that sway softly with every breeze. Piece by piece, your hands will follow the same patterns that generations before us used to invite order and peace into their homes. You’ll learn the basic techniques of straw preparation, stringing, and construction, and experience how a simple natural material can transform into something light, precise, and full of meaning. Together, we’ll move through a calm, meditative process — each gesture connecting thought, breath, and creation in quiet balance. By the end, you’ll leave not only with your own handmade Sodas — a timeless ornament carrying both heritage and your creative touch — but also with the knowledge, focus, and stillness that this ancient craft awakens. It feels less like finishing an object and more like completing a gentle ritual of patience and peace. To keep the experience personal and attentive, the group will be small and intimate — space is limited, so that every participant can receive individual guidance and care. This workshop invites you to slow down, focus, and reconnect — with your hands, your thoughts, and the quiet poetry of simple materials. No previous experience is needed, only patient hands, a calm mind, and an eye for quiet detail. Time is the finest luxury we have, and the rarest to give ourselves, so the moments you give yourself become treasures. Slow down with a meaningful creation and let your hands guide you into calm. 🌿🌿🌿 Humming Traditions is a series of creative workshops that explore the living, breathing essence of cultural practices. Each event invites participants to connect with ancient techniques, natural materials, and artistic expression in a hands-on, immersive experience. The series celebrates the quiet resonance of tradition — the subtle vibrations, textures, and forms that have carried meaning through centuries. Whether through sound, movement, or craft, Humming Traditions is about experiencing culture as a living, dynamic, and tactile art form. Each workshop stands on its own yet shares a common thread: creativity, mindfulness, and a connection to nature and heritage. Participants leave with newly learned skills, a calm mind, and a deeper appreciation for cultural artistry.

Sunday Badminton Event (10.30h-12.30h) Raketworld U3 Kendlerstraße
This is our weekly event! ----------------- Hey Badminton Enthusiasts! This meet-up is for all levels: beginners, intermediates and experts. Everyone is welcome to join, test their skills and have some fun together! The host will reserve courts in advance, that means please only register if you really plan to come (or cancel at least 24 hours before the event starts). The fee for this event is 12€ (for the 2 hours). If you plan on paying in cash, please bring the exact amount as the host might not have any change available. We are meeting at about 10:25 am near the reception by the lounge area (next to the courts). Come a bit earlier so you have time to change into workout/sports clothes. The locker rooms are free to use, but for the men lockers you need a padlock - or you can also take your bag of clothes upstairs to the courts if you do not have a padlock. Also, bring clean indoor sports shoes, your racket and a water bottle with you. There is a drinking fountain available if you need to replenish your bottle. If you do not have a racket, it is possible to rent rackets from the club, if necessary (3€). Sometimes the host or other members have spare rackets - please ask in the comment section below! If you are joining our events for the first time, WELCOME! Let the host know that you are new and they will find a place for you. Don't worry, we are an open and friendly group. We are sure you will develop connections with the people in our community in no time! Without further ado - let's play some badminton and have fun together!

Shut Up & Write!® - Sundays at Café Pierre
Come write with us at Cafe Pierre every Sunday at 18:00-20:00! A message from Shut Up & Write: "Shut Up & Write hosts free, in-person and online writing events for writers all over the world. Our goal is to ensure that every writer—regardless of genre or skill level—has access to the resources, community, and accountability that they need to be successful in their personal writing goals." And what this looks like at our event: We chat and give short introductions to what we are working on at 18:00, then start writing at 18:15. Though we try to start on dot, being late isn't a problem—just find a spot and get to work! We write until 20:00 and then discuss how our writing went. From fiction to non-fiction, academic papers to poetry, applications to work-related writing—anything goes! Nothing is needed except for you to bring whatever is need to get stuff done, i.e. laptop, headphones, pen and paper, and so on. Optional socialising may happen before 18:00 and after 20:00, or you may choose to use this time to get some more done! Please do order something from the café (drink, meal, dessert, etc.) so as to keep us in their good graces!

ADVANCED badminton players wanted!
ADVANCED badminton players wanted!
Thank you for visiting this event page! * Are you an advanced badminton player? If yes - WELCOME! * The earlier you sign up, the bigger your chance to reserve a place - once 9 other players have signed up already, you move to the waiting list. * Once the waiting list has 3 or more members, I will try to book an additional court, but no guarantees. I need to close the registration 24h before the event as I will then have to decide whether to cancel any court due to a shortage of players. You can still contact me if you want to play though. The fee per player will be €10.00 for 2 hours as the cost of both shuttles and court bookings have increased. But this should now cover also shuttles used during play. Please be on time as a curtesy to the other players. In addition, if you are on the players' list and don't come (i.e. no show), you will be automatically excluded from this group.

Social Hike: Moon River
Social Hike: Moon River
What an experience. After a 10-minute train ride just outside Vienna proper, we'll hit the fields and seek out a small creek heading East, passing two villages and one lovely town famous for its brewery. Low-flying planes hint at the proximity of an airport. Slowly turning into a river, the creek yet leads us in a different direction through thick forests and water preservation areas. To secure your spots, please ... Step 1: RSVP here on Meetup first (optional but recommended) Step 2: Complete your booking at https://vienna.ixpat.com/moonriver

Freestyle + White Elephant Gift Exchange
Freestyle + White Elephant Gift Exchange
**White Elephant Gift Exchange** (WEGE): This may be your only chance to re-gift that “undesirable” bobble or whats-it that you got for Christmas. Every year for Christmas my evil ex in-laws would give me the exact same gift that properly symbolized how well they knew me and how much they cared. For 24 years I received a bushel-basket sized bag of white tube socks from Gabe’s, a local discount/factory seconds store based in Morgantown, WV. If I were still married, that’s what I would re-gift in this gift exchange. No worries. I have since recovered emotionally and all my socks match and are all the same length. Goodwill was the lucky recipient of my 24-bushel sock collection quite some time ago. Things are better now. If you have nothing that merits being re-gifted, please try to keep the price limit to around $15. Remember, no one is required to participate in the gift exchange. You can watch and still have fun. The way this works: Each person bringing a gift will get a pretty yellow ticket (just like the ones we use for the Queen of Hearts). When the gift exchange starts I will draw a ticket and read the number. The person with that ticket may select a gift from the table. Being first is not a true victory in this instance. The next person whose number is drawn will chose a gift AND if they don't like it, they can exchange it for (steal?) the one the previous person selected. It goes on and on as mayhem ensues. Only one exchange. Exchange for any previously selected gift. Got it? Good. **On Freestyle night** \- just bring a bottle to share\. There is NO formal wine tasting like on other weeks\. Door charge is $10 \(cash or Venmo only please\)\. We may have some left over wines to clear out\! Glasses are provided\. Take Care\. See you there\. **Parking**: There are several public parking lots near the Alive614 hall. Please be careful to NOT park in private parking lots. They do tow. Check Google maps to scope out your space. Anyone who is early could easily find a parking space on the street nearby. I am told that the Chase parking lot is safe after hours. **Glasses**: …will be provided. Please note that after the wine tasting, the EMPTY glasses need to be returned to the boxes at the service table. Please do not make me hunt down your empty glass. Please be gentle, our glasses are fragile. Uh, they are made of glass! **Food**: You are welcome to bring a snack to share. It is not required. Most people do though. If no one brings anything, there will be nothing. **Code of Conduct**: Though mostly understood, it’s still worth mentioning. We don’t have rules per se, but we highly discourage the following topics of discussion because they are likely to incite anti-social responses - Sex, Politics, Religion. Please don’t mistake this as an attempt to limit your free speech rights but rather a guide to a place and time for appropriate discussions. **After the lights go out**: After the last sip of wine, when we clean up and turn the lights out, if you still haven’t had enough of us, it is typical for a group to get together and go to a local eatery for food and/or drinks or coffee. Again, We look forward to meeting new members and reuniting with old friends. Sincerely, ***Paul Uttermohlen***, **Red 1 Realty** *Your Hilliard Wine Club Host*

Again, We look forward to meeting new members and reuniting with old friends. Sincerely, ***Paul Uttermohlen***, **Red 1 Realty** *Your Hilliard Wine Club Host* **DISCLAIMERS**: The Hilliard Wine Club is just that, a club. It is not a commercial venture nor a non-profit organization [501(c)(3)] and as such does not provide commercial services such as accepting credit cards or retailing wine or other products. The weekly Queen of Hearts Raffle is a fund-raising event for the club to cover special events, entertainment and frequent cost shortfalls such as when more people RSVP than show up after wine is purchased to accommodate a larger group or when people show up on freestyle night without any wine to share (please don’t do that). Personal responsibility is the minimum we expect from our members who are encouraged to limit their alcohol intake as needed to allow for an enjoyable evening for everyone. Wine is the primary focus and choice beverage of the wine club. Hard liquor consumption is highly discouraged. On occasions when someone has consumed more alcohol than is allowed by law to operate a motor vehicle, members are encouraged to use a ride-share service, a taxi, a sober friend or a designated driver. Your safety and well being are of great concern to the leadership of the club, but are ultimately the responsibility of the individuals. Photographs and videos taken at the club by individuals and/or leadership of the club are the property of their creators and may be used as desired as long as their use is compliant with the law. In photographic privacy terms, you have the same rights as you do walking down a public street (near zero). Please do not attend any of our events if you are not aware of and in agreement with our disclaimers and policies. Members who behave in an anti-social manner can and will be banned from the club and barred from entry if needed (don’t test me on this), though admittedly it is a rare instance in which someone’s behavior necessitates being banned for life. Since 2017, there have only been a few. [Last updated on April 2, 2025]
