Bottomless brunch at Turtle Bay, Walthamstow
Join us for the first Girls About Stow event, a bottomless brunch at Turtle Bay, Walthamstow, on Sunday 19 April at 3pm. Iâve booked for 12 people, so itâs a lovely chance to meet, have a drink, and get to know each other properly in a fun, relaxed setting.
The brunch includes 90 minutes of unlimited cocktails, prosecco, draft beers and alcohol-free cocktails, plus a brunch dish, so it should be a really nice afternoon out. Looking forward to getting the first meetup in the diary and seeing everyone there.
Please only sign on to the event if you can definitely make it, as Iâve had to put card details down to secure the booking!
April Meeting 1 - James (Percival Everett)
In April's first meeting, we will read Percival Everett's 2024 book, *James.* The award-winning novel received both the Booker Prize in 2024 and the Pulitzer Prize in 2025. It is a fascinating retelling of a famed Mark Twain novel that many Americans read at school.
'A breathtakingly accomplished retelling of *The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn* from the point of view of the enslaved Jim, Everett's tour de force reclaims the character's voice from the literary margins with power, precision and dazzling wit.'
-Waterstones
'A captivating response to Mark Twainâs classic that is both a bold exploration of a dark chapter in history and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit'
-Booker Prize judges
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/173754979-james
The meeting will take place at the Big Easy - Canary Wharf. So come along for some down-home American cooking as we delve into this acclaimed novel.
N.B. We will be charging an event fee of ÂŁ3, non-refundable, to discourage no-shows and contribute to the running costs of the group. Please only sign up if you intend to come along as space is limited to make for an effective discussion!
East London Fiction Book Club
A fresh, intentional space for readers in East London who take their fiction seriously. We aren't a social mixer that happens to have a book in the background; we are a dedicated circle of six readers who meet once a month to dissect, debate, and celebrate high-quality literature.
Why Only Six?
We believe the best literary analysis happens when everyone has a seat at the head of the table. By strictly limiting our meetups to 6 people, we ensure:
No one is talked over.
The conversation stays focused and nuanced.
An intimate environment where we can truly get to the heart of the text.
The Reading List
Our focus is strictly fiction only. We explore the boundaries of the craft, focusing on:
Contemporary Literary Fiction (The Booker, International Booker, and beyond).
Modern Classics that deserve a second look.
Translated Works that offer a different lens on the world.
How We Work
When: Once a month on a Sunday
Where: Carefully selected, quiet spots across East Londonâfrom Hackney to Bowâwhere the atmosphere suits a serious conversation.
The Commitment: Because spaces are so limited, we ask that you only RSVP if you are certain you can attend and have finished the book. We dive straight into spoilers and structural analysis from minute one. If you cannot attend, pleaae cancel 24 hours before hand to allow someone else to attend
Songwriters' face-face Open Mic
Songwriters, come to our 3rd Sunday face-face songwriters' open mic at the Plough near the British Museum.
STOP PRESS 6/4/26 - this open mic is still running but the ability to book slots in advance has disappeared - sorry. You can access info about it here though: [https://www.greeneking.co.uk/pubs/greater-london/plough/whats-on ](https://www.greeneking.co.uk/pubs/greater-london/plough/whats-on)
The Plough is a nice pub, good food and the host is keen on original songs â I often go and can tell you it will be a fun evening
Hope to see you there,
Stu
PS remember open mics can be a bit informal and do occasionally get cancelled at short notice. I'll update attendees if I here anything...
PERSONALITY: Is there a Sovereign, Warrior, Magician or Lover inside all of us?
**In our next discussion, we ask: Are there only four core personality types â and do they explain more about you than you think?**
In the 1990s, psychologist Robert Moore and mythologist Douglas Gillette proposed that every person's behaviour falls into four broad patterns: the **Sovereign** (leadership and order), the **Warrior** (discipline and action), the **Magician** (knowledge and insight), and the **Lover** (connection and creativity). Think of them as four "modes" you switch between at work, in relationships, and under pressure.
Their book "King, Warrior, Magician, Lover" drew on Jung's psychology and cross-cultural research to argue that these patterns aren't just interesting labels â they're deeply embedded in how humans develop, and that most personal and professional dysfunction comes from these modes being underdeveloped or out of balance.
**POTENTIAL DISCUSSION POINTS:**
- **Do these four types ring true?** Think about the people you work with or live with. Can you map them to one dominant mode? Can you map yourself? Or is this just another personality quiz dressed up in mythology?
- **Is this relevant to everyone?** The book was written about men, but researchers like Jean Shinoda Bolen and Stephanie Welch have since argued these same patterns apply across all genders. Is mature leadership, disciplined action, sharp thinking, and deep connection really gendered â or just human?
- **What does "growing up" actually look like?** The authors argue that most adults are running on adolescent versions of these patterns â the Warrior without discipline becomes a bully, the Sovereign without responsibility becomes a pushover. Is this a useful way to think about why some people seem stuck?
- **What happens when these patterns go wrong?** Moore and Gillette describe "shadow" versions of each type â the Sovereign becomes a Tyrant, the Lover becomes an Addict, the Warrior becomes a Sadist. Have you seen these patterns play out in your boss, your family, or yourself?
---
**RECOMMENDED READING:**
We recommend "King, Warrior, Magician, Lover" by Moore and Gillette as excellent source material for this discussion â but it's not obligatory. Come with your thoughts, experiences, and opinions; that's all you need.

**GROUND RULES:**
This is a gentle, but thought-provoking, discussion.
It's a judgement-free zone where people can air their thoughts on particular issues, and discover other people's similar and different perspectives.
So bring your best opinions and ideas. Everyone is welcome.
**LOCATION:**
We will meet in the 1st floor area of Coffee Island Edgware Road.
There's plenty of space đïž, and coffee â, tea â, cold drinks, and snacks are available.
**NEAREST STATIONS:**
Edgware Road [Circle, Hammersmith City, District Line] (1 min walk)
Edgware Road [Bakerloo Line] (1 min walk)
Paddington [Bakerloo, Hammersmith, Circle and Elizabeth Line] (7 mins walk)

**FOOD AND SOCIAL AFTERWARDS:**
Most of us usually go for food afterwards, so feel free to factor in time after for dinner đđđđŁđđđ

Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Greetings writers! Come down and join your fellow wordsmiths for one hour of uninterrupted writing time in the upper level of the Market District Supermarket in Upper Arlington.
The main entrance of the shopping center opens onto stairs/elevator leading up to the 2nd floor cafe section where we will have a table displaying a sign with the Shut Up & Write logo.
Writing is largely a solitary craft. Practicing with others in a community setting may be the thing you need to fire your own routine.
Weâll meet on Wednesday evenings, starting the clock at 6:30, following a brief period of introductions. This is solid writing time and all inclusive. Any project is acceptable, be it fiction, non -fiction, work or homework assignment. All is welcome and will remain private to you.
The market boasts a Starbucks, a full service bar and various affordable food options. Parking is plentiful, free Wifi is provided as well as outlets for charging your devices, though they are somewhat limited, so plan accordingly.
Show up as early as you like, or stay late. This group tends to socialize some, both before and after the alloted time, but this is not mandatory to you. Feel free to come and go as you please and late arrivals are welcome.
The cafe may be noisy on occasion so headphones/ earbuds are reccommended as you see fit.
Please try to RSVP if possible so that we may grab enough seats for allâthe venue can be busy at times.
Feel free to message me privately wth any questions and/ or concerns you may have.
Happy writing!

Book summary:
In 2006 Julia Lerner is living in Moscow, a recent university graduate in computer science, when she's recruited by Russia's largest intelligence agency. By 2018 she's in Silicon Valley as COO of Tangerine, one of America's most famous technology companies. In between her executive management (make offers to promising startups, crush them and copy their features if they refuse); self promotion (check out her latest op-ed in the WSJ, on Work/Life Balance 2.0); and work in gender equality (transfer the most annoying females from her team), she funnels intelligence back to the motherland. But now Russia's asking for more, and Julia's getting nervous. Alice Lu is a first generation Chinese American whose parents are delighted she's working at Tangerine (such a successful company!). Too bad she's slogging away in the lower echelons, recently dumped, and now sharing her expensive two-bedroom apartment with her cousin Cheri, a perennial "founder's girlfriend". One afternoon, while performing a server check, Alice discovers some unusual activity, and now she's burdened with two powerful but distressing suspicions: Tangerine's privacy settings aren't as rigorous as the company claims they are, and the person abusing this loophole might be Julia Lerner herself. The closer Alice gets to Julia, the more Julia questions her own loyalties. Russia may have placed her in the Valley, but she's the one who built her career; isn't she entitled to protect the lifestyle she's earned?
