Board and card games at the Café
WHAT we play. As you know, we have two events, one more for social games on Thursday and another for **strategic games** on **Monday**. Depending on what people bring, we may play brainy games, not limited to chess and classic games. So, feel free to bring other ones.
And this is only indicative. Some games like Decrypto fit both events, **and if people feel like playing a social game on Monday or a more strategic one on Thursday, they are free to do so.**
WHERE. Because we have many strategic players on Monday and these games take longer, we moved to a café closing much later than the previous one.
CHATBOX USE. In the event chatbox, you are invited to discuss the games you bring and want to play for this session. The idea is to gather people around game tables beforehand. Of course, it's also possible to show up and arrange this after the introduction round, which starts at 7h15.
HOST. If you want to become a host and have your board game event for a specific game with a small group of people or in another place, Great! Let me know, and I'll help you set up your event with this group. Hosts don't pay fees.
TIMING: Because strategy games are often longer, we gather at 7 pm and start at 7:15. So, those who play long games can have 3 hours and 30 minutes for their game. You can come later, but you may have to wait before joining a game.
WHERE. We play upstairs. Ask which room at the bar downstairs.
DRINK. You have to order a drink at the bar, pay for it, and come up with it.
**PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT, UNFORTUNATELY, THE AUTOBUS ACCEPTS CASH ONLY.**
EVENT REGISTRATION.
Please register to allow us adequate venue planning.
IN CASE OF A WAITLIST. Please, out of respect for people on the waiting list, don't cancel later than 7 PM the day before so they can plan their evening correctly. If you are on the waiting list, please cancel your attendance if you change your mind and can no longer come.
Don't hesitate to send me a message to comment or make suggestions!
Take care and see you soon!

Monday Afterwork Socializing
Drinking & Networking in Brussels. For newcomers, temporary in town - couch surfers and regulars to meet & socialize. What a better day to start the week than drinking & socializing starting on Monday evening?
Leuven Sailors Meetup: Basic Sailing Theory (series)
Ahoy! [Leuven's sailing community](https://www.sailingcommunity.be/) organizes together with IHL an indoor evening all about sailing.
Do you lay awake at night wondering what makes Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Very Tasty? Are you dying to know the difference between lazy jacks, lazy lines and jackstays? Does your heart race at the sight of a green can buoy, but you don't quite know why?
Basic Sailing Theory has your back!
Join us for five thrilling Monday evenings (7–9 pm) where we’ll bravely tackle some issues relating to weather, navigation, seamanship, rules of the road, chart work, safety at sea, and more.
If you wish to be a bit less confused on your first sailing trip — drop by on the following dates:
March 9 & 23
April 13 & 20
May 4
Location: IHL, Tiensevest 60, Leuven
Price: Free!!
You can attend any one session, a few of them, or all of them, but there will be a bit of a build-up and we'll start each lesson from where we left off, so it is advisable to go all-in. The IMO won't come knocking on your door if you don't, though.
Registration is mandatory. Prior knowledge is absolutely not. There will be homework.
This group is led by some friendly international sailors, that want to share their passion and connect people with similar interests. Don't hesitate to come and learn or even add your own expertise!
About the volunteer for this series:
**Maija** will be the lead of the Basic Sailing Theory series. Born and raised in Siberia, in the heart of the world's largest landmass, about 2000 km from the nearest ocean, she dreamed of sailing ever since she learned that countries have laws and oceans are not countries. Drawn to what felt like the last wild and lawless frontier, she started sailing three years ago. After covering several thousand miles at sea, she has learned that water demands more constraint, discipline and respect for rules than land ever did. This is her first experimental attempt at sharing some of those rules.

**Cool down:** One or two short group games to end the session. The rules are explained by the moderator before each game.
There is no obligation to take part in games that you are not comfortable with.
There can be feedback after a game is played. This is so that we learn from each other and gain skills and insights.
**Tip**: If you are new, pay attention to the regular players when they are performing and notice small details, like how a stage is cleared before a scene, how to enter a scene, and how to collaborate with each other.
* **Who is it for?**

This is a great place to start if you are new to improv. The basics will be explained. We only require the "Yes, and...!" spirit!

[Afterwork Session] Speakeasy
[How to Play](https://youtu.be/xShivFRxmgE?is=PcgKoFQvcyX_M2FU)
[Gameplay](https://youtu.be/hopiSHqQ3VI?is=y39pTo-rje7spM0S)
Speakeasy will transport you to the roaring 1920s during the era of Prohibition. Manhattan was under the firm control of Lucky Luciano, a prominent mobster. To strengthen his grip on the territory, he implemented a well-structured system. He divided Manhattan into different districts, each assigned to a specific mobster responsible for handling their "business" operations.
The ultimate goal is simple: accumulate the most money and become the most successful mobster in the city. Do you have what it takes to rise to the top of the speakeasy scene and take over Manhattan during Prohibition? It's time to grab your fedora and find out in Speakeasy.

Afterwork Session : Lorenzo il Magnifico
Let's play Lorenzo il Magnifico, a very good eurogame, with a tight ressource management.
"*Lorenzo il Magnifico is a complex and strategic game with no luck dependence. Players will place their Family Members in different areas of the city to perform actions, but these Family Members are never the same as they change value every round. They will conquer new territories, sponsor magnificent buildings, encourage brave ventures and surround themselves with important characters. If they are smart and powerful enough, they can attract some of the most renowned contemporary celebrities and use their powers.*"
[BGG Link](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/203993/lorenzo-il-magnifico)
I will also have the expansions "House of the Renaissance" and the "Pazzi Conspiracy" which don't bring many extra rules, but introduce more variability in the game.
Afterwork Session : Scythe with modular board
Scythe is an engine-building game set in an alternate-history 1920s period. It is a time of farming and war, broken hearts and rusted gears, innovation and valor. In Scythe, each player represents a character from one of five factions of Eastern Europe who are attempting to earn their fortune and claim their faction's stake in the land around the mysterious Factory. Players conquer territory, enlist new recruits, reap resources, gain villagers, build structures, and activate monstrous mechs.
Scythe gives players almost complete control over their fate. Other than each player’s individual hidden objective card, the only elements of luck or variability are “encounter” cards that players will draw as they interact with the citizens of newly explored lands. Each encounter card provides the player with several options, allowing them to mitigate the luck of the draw through their selection.
Card games night
Welcome to our card games night. We will play on Wednesday from 19h-21h at CHEZWaWa Châtelain, a small restaurant.
The address is Rue Américaine 91, 1050 Brussels. (Be careful, there also is another CHEZWaWa restaurant.) Please arrive on time.
Feel free to call Bruno if you need directions or have questions at +32 485 298 713.
We'll bring a selection of games, and you are welcome to bring any of your own.
The restaurant serves delicious Mexican-Californian food you might wanna try. It will be available until 20h30.
Our group gets a 10% discount on food. We encourage you to have at least a drink, it helps to keep the business running ;)
If you like, you can also come a bit earlier for a chat or a snack. We'll be there from 18h30.

HTML5 Master Series (Class 03 of 04) (SPECIAL OFFERING)
**PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT NOTES:**
1. The dates listed for this series are about 95% reliable. We are completing our 2026 schedule as we speak, so minor adjustments are still occurring.
2. Each class in this series has an attendance fee, though this first offering is free on a first-come, first-served basis.
3. Each class, from BOTH a sign-up and fee perspective, is a separate entity.
**Introduction:**
HTML5 is the foundational technology for modern web development, serving as the standard markup language for structuring and presenting content on the World Wide Web. Developed through a collaboration between the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG), HTML5 provides a robust system of elements (tags) that tell a browser how to display text, images, and multimedia in a clear and meaningful way. It works in concert with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for presentation and JavaScript for interactivity, forming the core technology stack for virtually all websites and many web applications today.
One of the significant advancements of HTML5 is the introduction of powerful new features and elements designed to improve functionality and simplify development. Key additions include native multimedia support via the \ and \ tags, allowing developers to embed media without third-party plugins. It also offers new form controls for better user input, such as date and email types, and introduces web storage capabilities to store data offline for enhanced performance. These features streamline the process of building rich, interactive web experiences.
A significant focus of HTML5 is enhanced semantics and better structural organization of content. New semantic elements like , , , , and \ provide meaningful structure to documents, which aids in search engine optimization (SEO) and improves accessibility for assistive technologies. These elements define different parts of a webpage (e.g., a header for the top, a nav for navigation links, a footer for the bottom), making the code more readable and understandable for both developers and machines. This emphasis on clear structure helps in creating more logical and maintainable websites.
Developing websites in today's competitive environment requires taking advantage of every technique you can to get the maximum exposure possible. Our HTML5 class will not only show you what's new in the HTML specification, but also the best way to develop optimized web pages that get the attention your client and/or company requires.

* **Activity**: Students create a basic personal webpage containing text, a list of hobbies, and a link to an external website.

* **Integrating CSS**: Using inline, internal, and external style sheets.
