The Global Arms Trade! (LECTURE ON THE GO - 2026
\*\***The Toronto History Walks Explorer Pass is available. Get it now for $125.00 for 1 year of unlimited tours, email**
**torontohistorywalks@gmail.com**
**for more information or for signing up!\*\***
We have an amazing "Lecture on the Go" series for 2026. New topics and fascinating stories abound! Join us and learn about the world and keep active and warm during the winter months!
I started this walking classroom when we were under that horrible cloud called Covid. This series was popular and helped people get out and back into society and life. The series is back for 2026 with 6 new topics for exploration over the winter and spring months.
The "Lecture on the Go" Series is open only to members who have purchased the YEARLY MEMBERSHIP PASS, it's free for those members. If you wish to attend a lecture and you are not a yearly pass member then the price **per** lecture is $20.00.
This first lecture is focussed on the Global Arms Trade. How safe are we in a world of lies and corruption where the almighty dollar rules over life and death itself.
You would be surprised at the hidden secrets I have found during my research, and how arms are bought and sold in the international market. How money is laundered offshore, and brought back for school programs and senior centres. All these needed programs come from the trade in not only guns, but also in weapons of mass destruction.
In a business, and it's a business, which consumes trillions of dollars of taxpayer's money, and results in war and destruction all in the name of money and power. You will never view this world the same again. This topic is timely and fascinating to anyone who is interested in where money comes from, and where it goes when it leaves our pockets.
Hope to see you there!
Topics upcoming in the 2026 series of lectures are as follows.
\*The Global Arms Trade (January 31)
\*Dante; The Hidden Meaning Behind The Divine Comedy (February 28)
\*The 250 Year History of Encyclopedia Britannica: From Print to Digital (March 28)
\*Hidden Wonders of Canada; Northern Ontario History and Guide (April 25)
\*Philosophy 1: Great Minds of the Western World: Goethe to Kant! (May 30)
\*Philosophy 2: Great Minds of the Eastern World: Chuang Tzu to Dalai Lama (June 20)
This is the first event in the "Lecture on the Go," series for 2026!
Hope to see you on this "Lecture on the Go!" So book your plans now!
This event is for all levels and walkers, there are a few steps here and there to navigate, but mostly on one level. Mainly this event in a non walking event.
The lecture begins on the steps of Old City Hall at the northeast corner of Bay Street and Queen Street West.
This lecture event has a ticket price of $20.00 per person, and is **free with the yearly membership pass**. Hope to see you there!

Unplugging Hitler's Radio: A.I. and Historical Solutions to Bias Acceleration
Polarization remains an unresolved, existential threat in the A.I. Age. However, history shows us that new, relatively unregulated technologies have a history of being used to accelerate strategic divisions. In the 1930s and early 40s, Nazi Germany quietly blanketed North America with subtle, pro-German propaganda. A wealth of scholarship shows us that Axis forces used media formats that could fly under the radar in North America, including musicals, romantic comedies, and “cultural” programming in radio and film. Their goal was to sew division and prevent Canadians and Americans from entering into a war against Hitler.
History also shows us that our forebearers established innovative new ways of dealing with the social media crisis of their own day. Could some of the answers to the modern crisis around polarization and bias acceleration be found in the past? This talk shows how a small group of North American officials developed an innovative system to fight back. By embracing new media, they built groundbreaking, early anti-racist and anti-polarization campaigns that targeted the existing biases and divisions in North American populations that were being exploited by the Third Reich. More than contributing to the end of the war, evidence suggests that these often overlooked campaigns also helped pave the way for major anti-racist and human rights legal victories in the following decade.
Could we retool the strategies of historical anti-polarization campaigns for our own age? Drawing from the anonymous open history classroom for social media built with this model (55m views), L.K. Bertram discusses how algorithmic tools and critical, humanities-engaged algorithmic literacy can help us build and scale more engaging, public facing academic knowledge mobilization campaigns.

Associate Professor

About the Speaker:
L.K. Bertram is a faculty member in the Department of History at the University of Toronto specializing in the delivery of critical historical data through social media algorithms and the history of migration, gender, sexuality, and colonialism in the 19th century North American West. She is the author of *The Viking Immigrants: Icelandic North Americans* (Winner CHA Clio Prize / UTP 2020) and is currently finishing a book on the financial lives of sex workers in the 19th century West. Bertram's newest work focuses on how scholars can more effectively combat digital disinformation campaigns. As the anonymous curator of a large-scale public history campaign that hit 9 million views, she focuses on high-yield data packaging strategies for larger scale publics using video-based algorithms (TikTok and Instagram). This new SSHRC-funded project asks: “how do we make good data go viral in the disinformation age?” Follow the project on her new account @socialforscholars.

This is a talk with audience Q&A presented by the University of Toronto's Centre for Ethics that is free to attend and open to the public. The talk will also be streamed online with live chat [here](https://youtube.com/live/ekyz3wkjaQc).
About the Centre for Ethics (http://ethics.utoronto.ca):
The Centre for Ethics is an interdisciplinary centre aimed at advancing research and teaching in the field of ethics, broadly defined. The Centre seeks to bring together the theoretical and practical knowledge of diverse scholars, students, public servants and social leaders in order to increase understanding of the ethical dimensions of individual, social, and political life.
In pursuit of its interdisciplinary mission, the Centre fosters lines of inquiry such as (1) foundations of ethics, which encompasses the history of ethics and core concepts in the philosophical study of ethics; (2) ethics in action, which relates theory to practice in key domains of social life, including bioethics, business ethics, and ethics in the public sphere; and (3) ethics in translation, which draws upon the rich multiculturalism of the City of Toronto and addresses the ethics of multicultural societies, ethical discourse across religious and cultural boundaries, and the ethics of international society.
The Ethics of A.I. Lab at the Centre For Ethics recently appeared on a list of 10 organizations leading the way in ethical A.I.: https://ocean.sagepub.com/blog/10-organizations-leading-the-way-in-ethical-ai
SCARBOROUGH - Practical Philosophy 🇨🇦
**🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌
**📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CczLhTWSfgM898ThZWutfp), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the ‘official' start.
* 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.
* 20:45-21:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.
* 21:00 - The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other.
**🧧PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend! We just ask that if we are meeting in a café, buy a beverage! Some chapters rent a space for us to meet, and they may ask for donations to help contribute to the cost of rent. Donations will always be 100% voluntary though!
💛 **WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
🗣 “I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” - Ekam
🗣 “I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” - Daniel
**🤓 FAQ**
* What will we talk about? What's the topic?
The topic for the week is shared every Sunday in the Whatsapp group. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you don’t see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CczLhTWSfgM898ThZWutfp).
* Do I need to study or read anything to attend?
No preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it, but it's not required.
* Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* Is it mostly men that attend?
Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms.
* Can I come alone?
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* Can I be late?
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* Where do you meet?
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CczLhTWSfgM898ThZWutfp) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/).

Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program:
Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there!
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.

Saturday Mornings @ East Market
Let's grab some coffee/food and share a morning chat! The East Market has an ample parking lot and outdoor and indoor seating.
Grab a cup of coffee from Winston's Coffee & Waffles or on your way to East Market and meet us on the second floor - table behind or east of the elevator. If the weather cooperates we will be meeting in the patio.
Per what this group is about: "Everyone is welcome! International transplants to Columbus who want to improve language skills, Columbus residents who want to discuss international travel and culture, and anyone who enjoys getting together for good conversations."
