Open philosophical discussion in the heart of Prague
Welcome to the international Café Philo in Prague. We meet every first Saturday of the month in the cosy [Café Millème](https://store11473398.ecwid.com) in the center of Prague. We choose a participant randomly, by lottery, who then has the privilege to determine the topic of our discussion. We will reflect, ponder and exchange arguments until our brains are on fire. Philosophy isn't just something for universities, it is a way to open your mind to new thoughts and questions. No application is necessary, there is no entrance fee and there are no prerequisites for participating, except curiosity and respect for other people. We meet from 17:15 until 18:45 to follow together the white rabbit into the wonderland of philosophy...

Saturday running and coffee
Hi All,
Come and join us for social running and a coffee!
We meet at the main gate of Vystaviste - tram stop Vystaviste Holesovice. We will run in Stromovka.
Usually we run around 50mins and it is up to everyone how many kilometres. We welcome all levels of runner. We can all run together or, if there is more of us, we can split into groups and at the end of the run we all meet close to the starting point to go for a coffee to a nice local coffee place (where they also sell cakes and great chocolate). If the weather is great, we can also just sit in one of the outside coffee placces in Stromovka and enjoy the sun.
This is where we meet:

Hi everyone!
Please join us on **Saturday, April 11th**, for a screening of **[Damnation](https://nfa.cz/en/63600-karhozat?screening=63601) (Prokletí/Kárhozat)** at [Kino Ponrepo](https://nfa.cz/cs/kino-ponrepo). The film begins at **20:30**.
You’ll find me (wearing a bright pink/flowery scarf) at the Ponrepo café from **20:00**.
The movie, directed by Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr and first released in 1988, follows ‘a depressed man named Karrer [who] falls in love with a married singer performing at a neighborhood bar and pursues her to despair’ ([here](https://www.arter.org.tr/EN/events/film-damnation-k%C3%A1rhozat/12502). More [here](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2001/mar/30/1)).
Come enjoy this screening and stay for a drink and a chat about the film afterward!

Michle
Hello,
I would like to invite you to another spring walk, this time to Michle.
Michle is a neighborhood of many faces. Though it may seem purely industrial, it conceals charming nooks and one-of-a-kind technical treasures. Once we get there, we will experience the striking contrast between the historic 'old village' by the Botič stream and the high-tech, modern city that Michle has become. We however will meet in front of the Vinohrady Water Tower to enjoy some parks and views before descening to the quarter in question. The entire route is about 6km long, and at the end there will be a pub awaiting us to serve well deserved drinks.
Walking shoes are recommended. Please be on time. If you expect delay of more than 5min, please leave a message in the comments.
Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Guided Czech Speaking Session (A2 level)
I’ve been learning Czech for 4 years, but speaking still feels like my weak spot. I realized it’s not more lessons I need — it’s more real conversation.
So if you’re learning Czech and feel a bit stuck, too, I’m putting together a small face-to-face speaking club.
No awkward language exchange vibes,
No repeating the same topics.
**It’s guided by a Czech instructor, relaxed, and practical — all for the price of a coffee ☕️**
Why this works
1\. You actively speak\.
2\. Real people\, real reactions\.
3\. Structured\, guided\, efficient
4\. Everyone here gets it\.
5\. A whole month for the price of one lesson\.
💰 60 minutes per session · once a week. Persistence is key!
💰 The first session is **150 CZK**, and then **700 CZK / month**
👩🏫 A professional native instructor guides the sessions.
📍 Location: Won Academy - [Křenova 438/1](https://maps.app.goo.gl/RF4sU9LHPCuS8RYk6) (right at the tram/metro station, Petriny)
🔄 After trying a level, it’s possible to switch to a different one if needed.

This is for anyone wanting feedback! We mostly focus on novels and longer works, but short stories are welcome, as well. You can submit anything you want feedback on in any genre. Current word limit for submissions is 4,000 words. Send your submissions by 13:30 the Thursday before the meeting (or we have a grace period during which you can submit a lower limit of 2,500 words if you submit by midnight Thursday evening). Also, if you don't have time to read through everyone's submissions, still join the meeting! We know that busy schedules don't always make finding reading time easy.
To submit, use the Dropbox folder. If you don't have access to it, send sonyalakadosch@yahoo.com your e-mail address so I can add you.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there! My number in case of any confusion the day of the meeting is 737 118 530 - or on Facebook: Sonya Lano (https://www.facebook.com/sonya.lano)
DROPBOX INFO:
* add new submissions for the next meeting in the " submissions" folder for the meeting date. Put your name at the beginning of the file name (for example: "Sonya Somewhere in the Dark")
* When providing written feedback (not required, but deeply welcome), save the file as a separate document on your device, then mark your changes/ feedback in the saved file. After you're finished, put the file in the "Feedback" folder under the folder for the meeting date and then under the person the feedback is for (e.g. "For Sonya").
* The submissions folder will be replaced within a week after the meeting has taken place. Feedback will be deleted within 2 months after the meeting, so if you need it longer than that, make sure to copy it to your own disk.

Drunken
This month's prompt concerns the idea of the “warrior philosopher” (seemed appropriate in these times)--that is someone whose understanding of violence, power, and justice is forged through direct experience of war. We are looking at Major General Smedley D. Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine raised in a Quaker (pacifist) tradition who later became a prominent critic of American militarism (there is a wonderful biography of Gen. Butler called "Gangsters of Capitalism")
Butler's argument in *War Is a Racket* (1935): that many U.S. interventions were driven less by national defense than by corporate and financial interests, with Butler portraying himself as an enforcer for business and Wall Street. We can consider the moral ambiguity of his insider critique—whether complicity strengthens or undermines credibility and also consider some of the concrete reforms he proposed (e.g., “conscript” capital before soldiers, restrict the military to coastal defense, and have only those who fight decide on war).
Butler’s life arc clearly changed from pacifist upbringing to warrior to antiwar crusader—and asks whether true understanding of peace requires firsthand knowledge of war, and what that implies about the cost of suffering. So do we need to suffer to understand suffering? Do we have to experience war to appreciate peace? As one more question: in the movie "A Few Good Men" Jack Nicholson's character says that "you have the luxury of not knowing what I know" so do most of us go through life oblivious to real violence and suffering? See you at Drunken Philosophy!
