The Blazing World: A New History of Revolutionary England, 1603-1689
The Blazing World: A New History of Revolutionary England, 1603-1689
Join us over food and drinks to discuss the book, “The Blazing World: A New History of Revolutionary England, 1603-1689.” Description of book: **The seventeenth century was a revolutionary age for the English. It started as they suddenly found themselves ruled by a Scotsman, and it ended in the shadow of an invasion by the Dutch. Under James I, England suffered terrorism and witch panics. Under his son Charles, state and society collapsed into civil war, to be followed by an army coup and regicide. For a short time—for the only time in history—England was a republic. There were bitter struggles over faith and Parliament asserted itself like never before. There were no boundaries to politics. In fiery, plague-ridden London, in coffee shops and alehouses, new ideas were forged that were angry, populist, and almost impossible for monarchs to control. But the story of this century is less well known than it should be. Myths have grown around key figures. People may know about the Gunpowder Plot and the Great Fire of London, but the Civil War is a half-remembered mystery to many. And yet the seventeenth century has never seemed more relevant. The British constitution is once again being bent and contorted, and there is a clash of ideologies reminiscent of when Roundhead fought Cavalier. The Blazing World is the story of this strange, twisting, fascinating century. It shows a society in sparkling detail. It was a new world of wealth, creativity, and daring curiosity, but also of greed, pugnacious arrogance, and colonial violence.** Lecture: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEPhi1mi9YI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEPhi1mi9YI) Look for the group with lights and a sign.

Citizen's Climate Lobby Monthly Chapter Meeting - 11:30AM at First UU
Interested in solving climate change? You are welcome in the Austin Metro chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby. We’re regular people who are working together to get climate laws passed. We connect over shared concerns, build consensus, and work with elected officials from both parties towards climate solutions. Our members include liberals, conservatives, and every shade in between. Together, we make a much bigger impact than we could individually by: * Getting more people talking about solutions * Building support for climate action with community leaders * Meeting with our members of Congress to advocate for effective climate solutions **🌍Note we had initially intended to meet earlier in the day and attend the Austin Earth Day celebration. However, the celebration was postponed due to weather so we are back to meeting at our normal time a 11:30AM.** This month we will be talking about some local opportunities for climate action, including getting involved with [Austin Climate Week](https://www.atxclimateweek.org/) going on from April 19 - 26th. We will not be watching the national meeting together but you are encouraged to tune-in on your own if you can. **To receive the zoom link to attend online, ask any questions, or just to speak with someone about how we advocate for climate change solutions in Austin, please send an email to austin@citizensclimatelobby.org**

Free Meditation on Saturday Morning
Free Meditation on Saturday Morning
In-person meditation Every Saturday 10:30 AM Sahaja Yoga is a method of actualizing the pure state of meditation, through the awakening of our inner spiritual energy. This experience of inner spiritual awakening also called as self-realization leads to a profound state of silence, a state of “Thoughtless Awareness”, where the mind is silent, and you simply witness the present moment. Austin Dharma Punks Meditation Session
Our meetings typically involve a 30-minute sitting meditation that is part guided, part silent, followed by a reading and an open discussion. It’s free to attend. We welcome all levels of experience with meditation. Our meditation sessions are led by rotating members of the group. There is no leader or authoritarian structure. Everyone is equal. Come as you are. Be prepared to remove your shoes and silence your phone. We meet at Austin Zen Center at 11am on Sunday. I'm going to arrive about 15 minutes early and sit on the front porch of the Zen Center to wait for people. If you have any questions about meditation or how Austin Dharma Punks operate, this is a good time to ask them. Let me know if you have any questions...

A Watershed Protection Plan (WPP) is a voluntary, community-driven framework designed to improve water quality in a specific watershed by identifying pollution sources, establishing goals, and outlining management strategies. It brings together stakeholders—such as anglers, landowners, and community members—to create a science-based, actionable plan that protects local waterways. At this meeting, guest speaker Sarah Stannard, Program Specialist with Texas Water Resources Institute, will share updates on watershed conditions and local projects. Attendees are encouraged to provide feedback and discussion on priorities and the development of the watershed protection plan. Drunken
Drunken
This month's prompt concerns the idea of the “warrior philosopher” (seemed appropriate in these times)--that is someone whose understanding of violence, power, and justice is forged through direct experience of war. We are looking at Major General Smedley D. Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine raised in a Quaker (pacifist) tradition who later became a prominent critic of American militarism (there is a wonderful biography of Gen. Butler called "Gangsters of Capitalism") Butler's argument in *War Is a Racket* (1935): that many U.S. interventions were driven less by national defense than by corporate and financial interests, with Butler portraying himself as an enforcer for business and Wall Street. We can consider the moral ambiguity of his insider critique—whether complicity strengthens or undermines credibility and also consider some of the concrete reforms he proposed (e.g., “conscript” capital before soldiers, restrict the military to coastal defense, and have only those who fight decide on war). Butler’s life arc clearly changed from pacifist upbringing to warrior to antiwar crusader—and asks whether true understanding of peace requires firsthand knowledge of war, and what that implies about the cost of suffering. So do we need to suffer to understand suffering? Do we have to experience war to appreciate peace? As one more question: in the movie "A Few Good Men" Jack Nicholson's character says that "you have the luxury of not knowing what I know" so do most of us go through life oblivious to real violence and suffering? See you at Drunken Philosophy!
