Which jobs will disappear first?

Details

Getting here: Enter the lobby at 100 University Ave (right next to St Andrew subway station), and message Giles Edkins on the meetup app or call him on 647-823-4865 to be let up to room 6H.

A fully-fledged "Artificial General Intelligence", with the aid of robotics, might be able to learn how to perform any human job, and do so more cheaply. Such an event would completely transform our economy, with the concept of "working for a living" no longer making sense.

In the meantime though... A lot of people are very worried about job losses due to AI in the nearer term. Even if this expands the economy and creates new kinds of job, not everyone will be able to adapt and reskill, and AI is advancing very quickly. This presentation and discussion will focus around the question: which kinds of job will disappear first?

We might also touch on some issues around what governments should do about an AI-driven employment crisis (if it indeed happens), and to what extent inferior AI services will be allowed to replace human labour (as we've observed with e.g. the partial automation of customer service helplines).

As always, the future is very hard to predict but we'll try to do our best to aggregate the ideas and approaches that are out there.

We welcome a variety of backgrounds, opinions and experience levels.
