What we’re about

The Toronto Film Society is one of Canada’s oldest film appreciation groups. It was originally formed to meet the demand for Canadian and international forgotten, banned, independent, and fringe sound and silent films, and to support their preservation and restoration. It is a volunteer run, membership driven, non-profit organization dedicated to the study of the artistic, historic, and social significance of cinema. Our expertly-curated films (from 1910-80, of various genres) are shown on the big screen, as they were meant to be enjoyed. Some are rare archival prints not easily obtained by the general public. Our extraordinary series, festivals, and events engage diverse cinephiles of all ages from Toronto and beyond.

On Sunday, November 2, at the Paradise Theatre in Toronto, the Toronto Film Society is showing an Alfred Hitchcock double feature - two films for one low price!

First up is Alfred Hitchcock’s own personal favourite, Shadow of a Doubt, delivers slow-burning suspense wrapped in the idyllic charm of small-town America. When young Charlie suspects her beloved Uncle Charlie may not be who he claims to be, the tension quietly mounts into a masterclass of the psychological thriller. With sly humour, chilling subtext, and a pitch-perfect performance by Joseph Cotten, this is Hitchcock at his most insidious – and intimate. Don’t miss the chance to see this taut thriller the way it was meant to be seen: on the big screen!

Next up is Saboteur: From flaming airships to the Statue of Liberty, Saboteur is Hitchcock in full chase-mode. When aircraft factory worker Barry Kane is wrongly accused of sabotage, he’s thrust into a cross-country hunt to clear his name and uncover the real traitor. Packed with suspenseful set pieces, shadowy villains, and a patriotic pulse, this film is both a gripping thriller and a snapshot of wartime America. Buckle up for a rollercoaster ride of suspense and subterfuge on the big screen!
