Gaslight (1940), released in the U.S. as Angel Street, is a tense and elegantly crafted British psychological thriller, steeped in Victorian gloom and mounting dread. Diana Wynyard is deeply affecting as Bella, a woman systematically manipulated into doubting her own mind, while Anton Walbrook is chillingly controlled as her husband. Directed by Thorold Dickinson, this earlier version of Gaslight (1944) is leaner and darker than the more famous remake, with an atmosphere of creeping menace that never lets up. It remains an influential and gripping suspense classic.
