The Mystery of Libra:
In Libra, the disciple stands at the point of balance between the pairs of opposites — spirit and matter, the higher self and the lower — and is asked to choose. This is the sign of the Scales, and its keynote is the act of conscious choosing:
"CHOOSE THE WAY WHICH LEADS BETWEEN THE TWO GREAT LINES OF FORCE."
Bailey teaches that Libra governs the theme of right human relations, and that the Law of Equilibrium operates here at every level — from personal relationships to the great karmic balancing that underlies the life of the soul. Saturn, the hierarchical ruler of Libra, is the lord of karma; it is in Libra that the weights of the soul's choices are ultimately measured.
The 9th Field of Group Work
The 9th Field represents the mystery of equilibrium. In Libra, the soul confronts the pairs of opposites consciously and must learn to hold the balance — not by avoiding the tension between them, but by standing at the midway point where neither pole dominates. Bailey describes Libra as the sign in which the Law of Equilibrium operates and in which the karmic weight of past choices comes to the surface for resolution. It is the sign of right relations — both between individuals and, at the larger scale, between humanity and the greater life in which it moves.
Major Themes of Libra
The Scales: Equilibrium and Choice
Libra occupies the midpoint of the zodiac — the point on the ordinary wheel where the path of return begins. It is the sign in which the soul, having entered fully into the life of the lower self, begins to turn toward the higher. The Libra disciple is learning to hold steady at the point of balance, bringing the claims of the lower self under the governance of right choice — which Bailey associates with the slow development of right judgement and the power to discriminate.
Right Human Relations
Libra governs the theme of right human relations — which Bailey identifies as one of the foundational goals of the spiritual path and the basis of the coming era. In Libra, the soul learns to meet others with justice and impartiality, not from personal affection but from an impersonal recognition of the soul in each. This is distinct from Scorpio's work of purification through conflict; in Libra, the task is to establish right relationship as a conscious and sustained practice, grounded in the Law.
The Libra-Aries Axis
Libra and Aries form one of the four Cardinal axes of the zodiac. Aries initiates; Libra equilibrates. At the Libra full moon, the Sun in Libra and the full Moon in Aries bring this axis into direct illumination. Bailey notes that in Aries the soul is swept into incarnation by the pull of matter; in Libra, it confronts the consequences of that impulse and is asked to choose. The disciple working with this axis is learning to bring the raw energy of individual desire and will — which Aries represents — under the governance of the Law.
Planetary Rulers
- Exoteric Ruler: Venus ♀ — At the personality level, Venus in Libra governs the love of beauty, harmony, and relationship. It seeks peace and avoids conflict — sometimes to the point of losing truth in the name of comfort.
- Esoteric Ruler: Uranus ♅ — At the soul level, Uranus shifts the Libra focus from personal relationship to group consciousness. Bailey associates Uranus with the drive toward human unity and the establishment of right human relations at a collective level. The disciple inspired by the soul in Libra works not for personal harmony but for the conditions that make right relationship possible across humanity as a whole.
- Hierarchical Ruler: Ruler: Saturn ♄ — At the level of initiation, Saturn governs Libra as the lord of karma and the Law of Cause and Effect. Bailey teaches that in Libra the initiate meets the full reckoning of past choices. The capacity to stand in that reckoning comes from having already made the fundamental choice for the soul and sustained it through the earlier labours of the path.

The Labour of Hercules
The Capture of the Erymanthian Boar
Hercules is sent to capture the great Erymanthian Boar alive — a massive, destructive creature that has been ravaging the countryside. The task is to master it, not destroy it: the boar must be brought back breathing.
On the way to the mountain, Hercules stops to visit Pholus, a kind and gentle centaur who receives him with great hospitality. Pholus opens a jar of wine that belongs to all the centaurs in common. The scent of it draws the others — wild, unruly centaurs — who attack in a rage. In the ensuing chaos, Hercules draws his arrows to defend himself. One arrow, poisoned with the Hydra's blood, flies astray and wounds Chiron — the wisest and most beloved of all the centaurs, who had come to make peace. Chiron, though immortal, suffers a wound that will not heal. He eventually chooses to surrender his immortality to end the pain.
Shaken, Hercules continues to the mountain. He does not overpower the boar through brute force. Instead, he drives it deeper and deeper into the snow — exhausting it, wearing it down — until it is too weary to resist. He then lifts it onto his shoulders and carries it back alive.
Bailey's commentary on this Labour draws out two threads of the Libra teaching: the danger of causing unintended harm to the wise through lack of discrimination (as in the wounding of Chiron), and the principle that the desire nature is not to be destroyed but controlled. The boar is captured alive — the lower nature brought under the direction of the higher will, made serviceable rather than eliminated. This is the Libra task: not suppression, but right governance of the forces within.
