Details

Algonquin Park and Snowy Owls!

Please join us for an exciting weekend adventure on February 3-4, 2024, to Algonquin Park Provincial Park and for Snowy Owl viewing on the way back to Toronto.

Algonquin Park is magical in the winter, full of beauty, birds and wildlife surprises.
On Saturday Morning, February 3, 2024, we will depart at 8 am for Algonquin Park. We will arrive in the Algonquin Park at approximately 11 am. We will then spend the rest of the day in search of birds and wildlife in the park. This will include a few short hikes.

Algonquin Park is truly a winter birder’s paradise that is home to many unique birds including Canada Jays which will feed right out of your hand. Birds that are not commonly seen in Southern Ontario but can be found in Algonquin Park include the Black-backed Woodpecker, Spruce Grouse, Red Crossbills, Pine Siskins, Boreal Chickadee, Common Redpoll, Hoary Redpoll, Boheniam Waxwing, Pine Grosbeak and Evening Grosbeak just to name a few.
Sunday morning, we will depart for Algonquin Park at 7:00 am staying in the park till approximately 12 pm before heading back, where we will stop for some Snowy Owl viewing.
Along with Moose that can be seen in Algonquin Park, there are many different animals that if we're lucky, can be seen, such as American Pine Martens, Red Foxes, and Whitetail Deer.
You never know, we might see the park’s elusive ghost, the Algonquin Wolf! We have had several wolf sightings over the years. Wintertime is your best chance to see wolves in the park.
Wintertime is a great time of year to see Pine Martens frolicking in the snow, or an Otter, playing on the ice. A myriad of stunning winter Finches are being seen right now in the park and that will only increase in the coming days.

After arriving at Algonquin Park Saturday at noon, we will travel through the park along the Highway 60 corridor, watching for wildlife and birds. We will especially keep a lookout for the park’s centerpiece, the Eastern Moose. The chance to see one of these magnificent mammals is a truly extraordinary experience. Have your camera and binoculars ready!

Late afternoon is one of the prime times to see wildlife. After our visit into the park, we will head back to Huntsville, where we will go for a group dinner at a nearby restaurant. On Sunday after an early stop at the local Tim Hortons, we will head back into Algonquin Park for 2 more short hikes and for more wildlife and bird viewing.
We will also be visiting the Algonquin Visitor Centre. You can watch a short movie about the history of the park, wander through the display areas, and shop at the park store. The Visitor Centre offers a dazzling panoramic perspective of the park from the huge outdoor deck and bird feeders!

Some Important Information: The trip is considered Easy Activity, but trails can be snow covered and icy. We will only be doing short walks as our priority is to show you wildlife and birds. Appropriate footwear and clothing are a must.
So please join us for this visit to Algonquin Park and for Snowy Owls. Being there 2 days will give us a much better chance to see wildlife.
