It's with great excitement that we are announcing a reboot of the Toronto Unreal Engine meetup group. To kick off the first of a series of new monthly sessions we are thrilled to bring you three speakers to our first event from Toronto studio Torn Banner and Houdini creators SideFX.

The intention of this meetup is to be a monthly event occurring on the 3rd Tuesday of each month out of the new WeWork facilities at Yonge and Bloor, with the first event kicking off April 17th.

We will attempt to keep the subject matter broad and varied looking at an Unreal-centric workflow from both a development and an art side with the hopes to have two speaking sessions at each event and plan to look at not only the UE4 creation tools but also all of the other related applications connected to potential Unreal pipelines including Blender, Houdini, Maya, Substance, 3rd party plugins, and more.

Additionally since Unreal is not just used for game design but also for architectural visualization, VR & AR app development, simulation & training, real time film effects and interactive art we aspire to bring speakers in from multiple disciplines and encourage spraking session proposals from the community. Please spread the word about this great new reboot of the group and feel free to bring a friend via the meetup.com RSVP feature.

If you would like to bring a demo of your game or app please arrive at 6:00PM to setup and let us know ahead of time so we can get the appropriate number of power bars!

If you would like to propose speaking ideas for future sessions please forward an overview to the organizers for consideration.

This event will have a 100 person cut-off so please make sure to RSVP in order to be let into the building.

See you there!

SPEAKER & SESSION INFO

Greg Semple

Greg Semple has been working on networking and high-performance code for more than 17 years. He scaled Chivalry servers to 64 players, and was an integral part in scaling the Star Wars: The Old Republic servers from 400 to over 4,000 people. He enjoys squeezing as much performance as possible out of the available hardware.

SESSION SYNOPSIS - Server Optimization in UE4: Getting to 64 Players And Beyond!

This session will detail strategies used at Torn Banner to achieve 30 FPS for 64 players on a dedicated server for an upcoming unannounced project. Creative solutions will be offered to push the limits for core engine systems such as movement and replication. Emphasis is given to optimizations that require code changes to the engine, while quickly covering some of the built-in UE4 optimization features.
