[MUSIC DISCUSSION] All about evil: Good music, bad deeds
Details
This Halloween, TPOP is leaving the ghosts ‘n goblins for the kiddies and going straight for the hard stuff. Yes, we’ll be discussing all things evil, be they people, deeds, or general subtopics. Evil is a popular musical topic spanning both centuries and genres: maybe the best-known example is the murder ballad, which has an extended history in both Europe and the US (see here for a brief history: https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/music/a37078255/history-of-murder-ballads-stagger-lee-true-story/).
Running the show this month will be the inimitable Rachel C., who suggested the topic. As usual, we’re soliciting contributions, which you can make by posting a comment or DMing me with up to ten of your evilest tracks on a YouTube or Spotify playlist. Like beauty, evil is in the eye of the beholder, so everyone’s choices will reflect their own personal understanding of the term. The starter playlist, which includes both Rachel’s and my picks, will give you some idea of what we feel is in scope, but obviously you shouldn’t feel limited by that.
(In case it doesn’t go without saying, TPOP in no way endorses any of the despicable acts described in the songs we will discuss. But, like fans of horror films and true crime podcasts, we find evil fascinating in its repulsiveness.)
We’ll be gathering right before Halloween, on Saturday, October 28th at 8pm, at the Casual Pint in Chapel Hill as usual (outdoors if weather permits, indoors if not). Let us know if you can make it, and until then, may your experience with evil be exclusively musical (and perhaps cinematic. Artistic, let’s say).
