Seven Sisters, Alfriston village, Cuckmere Haven beach and white cliffs HIKE

Details

This Glynde to Seaford hike starts along the South Downs Ridge, passing through Firle Park and continuing for much of the day on the South Downs Way. The terrain is mostly gentle, offering stunning views over the verdant northern valleys and out towards the sea. Early on, the route visits three charming villages—West Firle, West Dean, and the historic smuggling village of Alfriston, where the large church is proudly known as a cathedral. All three villages have open churches to explore.

From Alfriston, the trail follows the meandering river through the scenic Cuckmere Valley and into Friston Forest, eventually reaching Exceat—an abandoned village on the edge of the Seven Sisters Country Park. From here, the Vanguard Way leads through the Seaford Head Nature Reserve, where rare birds like the hoopoe, bluethroat, and wryneck have been spotted. This section offers a prime view of the dramatic white cliffs of the Seven Sisters and a seasonal opportunity for a swim at Cuckmere Haven beach.

After Cuckmere haven the hike follows a coastal cliff path to the seaside town of Seaford, known for its long esplanade and restored shingle beach—another inviting spot for a swim or to simply enjoy the sea air and view.
