Buckinghamshire Wendover Hills and Woods Trail - Saturday 18 October
Details
Journeying to Wendover, tucked into a valley within the Chiltern Hills, we shall hike out along the Ridgeway, which is possibly Britain's oldest trail, in use since the stone age.
Our trail will take us along a scenic canal built to supply waterways both north and south of the Chilterns. Along the way the canal is crossed by a pretty bridge, built by Alfred de Rothschild whose family was the richest in the country. We will also be passing by Alfred's house, Halton Place, which he restyled in the manner of a beautiful French chateau.
Then, heading east, we will approach Wendover Woods, located amongst a picturesque mix of hills and valleys. Hidden in this forest are the remains of an ancient fort from which there are spectacular views of the Vale of Aylesbury. Our hike will also take us to the very highest point of the Chilterns, located on a forested plateau at the top of Haddington Hill.
From there we shall descend into a beautiful conifer covered valley and, before finishing, cross more woods and fields to our journey's end.
