The Wildcat Ridge WMA hike is a 4-mile loop with 600’ of elevation up and down. It's an easy to moderate hike that we'll take at a leisurely pace.
We will email the parking and hike prep details to those registered closer to the hike date.
Tucked between Rockaway Township's town of Hibernia and Split Rock Reservoir lies a large portion of Wildcat Ridge Wildlife Management Area, one of New Jersey's many multi-use WMAs. It contains nearly 4,000 acres in Morris County where hikers can find miles of blazed trails and old woods roads running maze-like through most of the WMA.
From the parking area, already in the heart of the woods, we'll head downhill to visit the large and long-forgotten St. Patrick's Cemetery eerily sitting in the middle of nowhere. After visiting the buried miners from the 1800s, we'll head back uphill through the woods to Wildcat Ridge. We'll pause at Hawk Watch, a rock outcropping with stunning views and the possibility of watching birds of prey dance in the wind. We'll complete our loop as we talk about hiking basics and safety as well as the TrailBound Project hiking gear essentials.
