Balsam Lake Mountain is an excellent introduction to peak bagging in the Catskills because it is arguably the easiest of the 33 Catskill 3500 peaks that one must climb to become a Catskill 3500 Club member. It's about 4.5 miles on trail (no bushwhacking) with 1,200' of elevation change that we'll hike at a leisurely pace in 4 to 5 hours.
The trail is steep, but well-maintained. We'll be rewarded with a stunning view at the top where the Balsam Lake Fire Tower sits above everything. It is one of the 6 fire towers in the NYS DEC Catskills Fire Tower Challenge.
