Mount Tammany needs no introduction, but we'll give it one anyway! It stands at an impressive 1,526' tall, forms the eastern side of the Delaware Water Gap, and is a bucket list hike since some consider it, mile for mile, the most difficult hike in NJ. While not everyone agrees on that point, it is certainly a challenging fun hike!
Mount Tammany is in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, but we hike through Worthington State Forest to get there and return. It is a 3.5-mile loop hike with about 1,250’ of elevation up and down. It's a challenging hike due to its rocky terrain and elevation gain, but we'll take it at a moderate pace and enjoy the incredible views along the way.
After making our way through the lowland woods near the Dunnfield Creek, we'll start our rocky and constant ascent. After about 1/2 mile and 400' of climbing we'll reach our first views overlooking the Delaware River and Mount Minsi on the other side in PA which makes up the other side of the Delaware Water Gap. After a quick break, we'll continue upwards on our rocky but well-defined trail, navigating step-ups and switchbacks until we reach the views higher up and the ridge. We'll hike along the ridge with scattered views until we loop back along a steep and rocky trail down, passing a waterfall and interesting scenery until we arrive back at the base of the mountain.
