Guided Hike - Tripod Rocks!

Our events typically fill up at 24 people for guided hikes! You won't see the attendees here on meetup as registrations are on our site but we wanted to let you know that we typically see large outings for all of our events!

This guided hike has a nominal non-refundable $20 registration fee to secure your spot.

The Tripod Rock loop-hike in Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area is 3.5 miles and about 550’ of elevation up and down. It's an easy to moderate hike that we'll take at a leisurely pace.

Glacial erratics are rocks that shouldn't be there... An invasive species if you will! They differ from the bedrock and the native rocks because they were transported there by glaciers. Tripod Rock is a 180-ton glacial erratic that decided to stay put, exactly where it is now, on top of three smaller rocks, 18,000 years ago. Makes for a great photo! We'll be visiting Tripod Rock and some of the other largest glacial erratics in the state, as well as hitting a few breathtaking viewpoints along the way where, on a clear day, you can see the NYC skyline.

This hike is a great introduction to the 1,675-acre Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area where one can spend days exploring the Tripod Rock area on one side of Boonton Avenue and the Turkey Mountain area on the other side, with its interesting ruins and waterfalls. Pyramid Mountain is part of the Morris County Parks System which includes other great hiking parks such as Lewis Morris County Park, Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, and Silas Condict County Park.
